Super excited to share that a story from my postdoctoral work in the
@HuguenardLab
is out today in eLife. ๐ฅณ In it we explore the neural basis of attention dysfunction in epilepsy.
YA'LL, I've got some news! I'm over the moon to announce I'll be joining Harvard Medical School and Boston Children's Hospital as an Assistant Professor of Genetics and Neurology.
And just like that, I'm wrapping up my first official week as an Assistant Professor.
I was nervous to tweet about it (as if it might go away if I said it out loud? I DON'T KNOW)
But now I have an office and a new headshot so I guess it's really real! Lab photos coming soon!
Itโs a new week and Iโve got a shiny new lab space!
Looking around at the lab all full of potential, Iโm feeling incredibly grateful and am so excited to start building.

I'd be remiss without shouting out my fiance (
@Vesuveus

Hey
@BlackInNeuro
fam! ๐๐พ๐๐พ๐๐พ
I'm Brielle, I'm a neuroscientist and postdoc
@Stanford
, and I study attention impairments in a genetic mouse model of absence epilepsy.
And I'm SO proud to answer the
#BlackNeuroRollCall
๐ฃ
Thinking back to when I didn't even know what a neuron let alone a neuroscientist was
When I applied to grad school but was rejected from every program but one because I didn't have a "traditional" science background
If you told me I'd be here? ๐ฅบ๐ฅบ๐ฉ๐ญ
As a Black woman in science, every win has felt bigger than me, and this is no different. While I have so many research questions I want to tackle, I'm just as eager to be able to pay it forward.
The Ferguson Lab (still getting used to that ๐ ) will study all things cognitive function in mice with mutations linked to disorders like autism, schizophrenia, and epilepsy, to identify biomarkers and therapeutic targets for patients seeking treatment for cognitive impairments.

I'm here because of mentors who saw potential in me, and I can't wait to do my part to support the next generation, and fill the lab with a team of truly diverse scientists.

Many times over the last 10 years I questioned whether this space was for me, but earlier this year I started my dream job.

Being Black means waking up thinking you're going to have a normal day, but instead you're re-traumatized by footage of senseless and excessive violence toward your community.
An unarmed Black man was shot 7 times in the back while his three kids watched. I'm so tired.
As a Black person, when you think it can't be possible for you to feel more tired, this country always finds a way to disappoint you again.
I can't even put into words how it feels watching literal terrorism unfold at the capitol while the police....watch.

Now more than ever, it's so important to lift up the community being built by BlackInX weeks.
Instead of this moment being solely about Black Joy, they have to compartmentalize and hold space for both their celebration and their trauma, something we are all too familiar with.
