I’m sick of the “making them feel guilty” BS. If you feel guilty today over learning about the treatment of POC in the past, maybe it’s because you’re doing shit today that you shouldn’t be doing.
Also don’t transfer your guilt onto your kids.
@RexChapman
Anyone who chortles the way he did when his opponent discussed an ongoing pandemic that he’s done literally nothing to help offset doesn’t deserve our civility.
Trump said if Joe Biden is elected “the stock market will crash”.
The DOW went over 30K today - for the first time in history - as the Biden transition is officially underway...
I spoke to a young man who was interested in a career in tv writing. He asked about the value of a spec sample as opposed to an original sample, and I realized my thoughts on that issue had changed after getting to run a show and hire young writers (1/8).
Lindsey Graham tells young women that, “There’s a place for you in America — if you are pro-life — if you embrace your religion and you follow traditional family structure".
What a bad guy...
@RexChapman
I’ve written crime shows for 7 years and if I pitched the craven shit this dude and his wife did I’d be told to start over because it was too “on the nose”.
Fuck that guy.
Hi there, writer producer here.
The title of writer producer is earned only by getting staffed on a show (winning a lottery) that doesn’t get cancelled (winning another lottery) and being asked back (another) and not having to repeat a level (another).
Four times.
@OhNoSheTwitnt
To be fair, their lyrics weren’t exactly clear:
“Some of those that work forces
Are the same that burn crosses”
That could mean anything!

@jelenawoehr
Feels like Ted works in a female driven industry, say entertainment PR, because his dad died young and it was all his mom knew. It makes him a rarity in his field so he’s driven to work hard to prove himself. Too hard to start a family. But if the right girl came along...
According to Meadows, Trump tested positive for Covid on 9/26. On 9/27 he held event w/military families. Here’s what the Post said about it: “At Trump’s insistence, few were wearing masks…He wasn’t worried about others getting sick, but he did fret about his own vulnerability”
Getting a TV show made (pitch, pilot order, series order) requires an incredible amount of work but even more good fortune. Many variables outside your control, the universe aligning. Winning several consecutive lotteries.
Always remember that, especially when you succeed.
Every showrunner is different; this is just one persons opinion re: specs. But the young man I spoke to hadn’t thought of it that way, so perhaps someone reading this will feel the same. Happy writing! (8/8)
A spec of a current show, something still airing its first or second season, tells me you watched the show, absorbed it, and wrote a spec in a relatively short amount of time. That is more impressive to me than an equally good original you may have been tweaking for years (4/8).
I am blessed to write and EP a show starring
@itsgabrielleu
(who is also an EP) and can state emphatically she is not, and never has been, “difficult”. She’s a pro, thoughtful, and collaborative.
And her hair is dope AF.
2. Producers began to see
@itsgabrielleu
as "difficult" almost immediately when Union told NBC that Simon Cowell's constant indoor smoking (which went on for years I'm told) was impacting her voice and health and that of staff/crew.
A young writer with a solid spec has just proven they can write someone else’s show. If it’s the same genre as my show (cop, lawyer, etc) it tells me you can structure an episode with act outs, etc. But it can potentially also tell me you can write on a deadline. (3/8)
The point being, getting used to writing someone else’s show on a schedule that moves faster than you’d normally prefer is a good thing. It’s the job you’re applying for. (6/8)
Now that means youd need a new spec sample every year to stay current. Yup.
Feels like a lot of work, I know. But I’m hiring you to write my show when the goal is to give you 10-14 days to write a shootable draft (When everything’s going right.) (5/8)
Original samples are great and can be very helpful in establishing your voice. But as someone who is hiring you, it doesn’t tell me you can necessarily write my show. More established writers with credits, I can trust you can write someone else’s show because you’ve done it (2/8)
@dbwofficial
I would humbly suggest that anger is the wrong reaction. If they no longer recognize their own script, they ought to study the CRAP out of the one the showrunner published. Make the next one look like that.
And replacing your old spec doesn’t mean it was a waste of time. Every spec you write is a chance to improve; to write new voices and flex different muscles. And it’s a good thing to focus on if you are stuck on an original idea. It might jar something loose. (7/8)
This is why it's important for writers to cover set and understand what goes into making your document an episode/movie. Sometimes night exteriors are essential for the story. Many times they are not.
So many IATSE crew members walked with WGA during the strike. One way to help us is to write fewer nighttime exteriors. Every time you write "EXT. STREET - NIGHT," we have to drive home at 4am.

@jemelehill
At least Kyrie was upfront about it. Rogers tiptoeing around it implies he knew he was wrong; or at least he acknowledged there were rules that he didn’t want to follow.
I don’t agree with what Kyrie thinks but Rogers handled it exponentially worse.
The WGA proposed that TV shows should hire a minimum of six to 12 writers, but some writers disagree.
“Nobody asked for this,” said one prominent showrunner. “Every showrunner I know is against this. It doesn’t make sense to anybody.”
@PatCunnane
@BradleyWhitford
I can only imagine how less angry some of those Fox News viewers would be if their fathers had ever told them they loved them.
@RexChapman
Every first time staff writer should watch this video. This is what it looks like when you’re pitching/speaking just to have your voice heard. It’s a waste of everyone’s time and will guarantee your option is not picked up.
@Joshstrangehill
This is a super personal question so I apologize. Who pitched the snotty kid telling his mom “Buy 2, I’m not sharing with Katelyn.”?
Because I have a sister named Katelyn. I loved video games. I was a snotty kid. I need to know that joke wasn’t based on me.
1) you sorta are 2) not as much as you think you do 3) they’re not, your memories are intact regardless of things that happen in the future 4) the “real” one is a cartoon mermaid.
I know nothing about the specifics of this situation. Apparently there's a showrunner out there who ought to be able to clarify pretty quickly how this went down. But I do know one thing about qualifications, having hired writers before...
via
@thr
My dude, you are not the one who decides how qualified you are. If you've gotten a script and your SR decided not to staff you, there was a simple reason: it wasn't good enough. Do you have any idea how valuable a solid drafter is?
The article claims "heterosexual, white men need 'extra' qualifications to be hired". That's what we working straight, white male writers refer to as "talent". Keep at it, young buck! You'll get there one day.
