May not be a popular sentiment in the #DivTwit community but I’m much more in favour of FI than RE. It’s great to have a big nest egg but nothing wrong with continuing to work if you enjoy what you do and it keeps giving you more FI and more generational wealth.

If you’re under 35 and began investing after the Great Financial Crisis of 2008, then you may not be as great an investor as you think. The past 15 years have been so easy for stock investors. But… the 12 years from 2000 - 2012 had a 0% return. Can you even imagine that?

An orthodontist friend told me he gives his broker $40,000 per month. $480k/year He was going to retire when his portfolio hit $10M but that happened too quickly so he changed his goal to $20M, which he is approaching. What would you be doing if you were in his position?

Another harsh reality… Renters do not pay their landlords’ mortgage or property taxes. Renters do not pay their landlords’ maintenance/upkeep or insurance. Renters pay rent in exchange for a place to live. Whatever the landlord does with the rent $$ is their business.

Renters: You don’t pay your landlord’s mortgage You don’t pay their property taxes You don’t pay their insurance Unless you’re in a triple net lease and they provide you with invoices for those things, then you don’t pay them. The landlord does. What do you pay? Rent.

Life doesn’t start at retirement. If you have an extremely high savings rate, 50%, 60%, 70% and save like this for decades then you will likely accumulate millions. But you’ll probably be almost incapable of spending by then. You can save too much and spend too little.
