Regardless of the referendum outcome, there are some conversations we need to have. It is well past time to Close the Gap.

@SomaKazima
In Australia, Aboriginal people are black or blak.
Australia had a policy to “breed the black out” of Aboriginal people, this involved stealing children and raising them as white, marrying off young girls to old white men; which is why many today have very light skin.
Racists
So I can’t say anything when the Queen dies because its not appropriate because people are mourning their sovereign but on January 26th when I am mourning the loss of our sovereignty its ok to throw a party?
Respect of others grief should be a two way street yeah?
I have taken the liberty of creating a ‘paint by numbers’ of one of the most publicised pieces in the National Gallery and encourage the internet to ‘do your thing’.
A patient travels over 900km by bus alone for a biopsy for suspected cancer. Biopsy not done because “no interpreter to tell the patient to stay still”, patient sent back to community by bus. 7 days round trip. No treatment. No answers.
Tell me again how you are closing the gap?
Peter Stefanovic should be ashamed.
But honestly Media watch should call out this disgusting behaviour from a ‘journalist’ for what it is, where is the outrage?
Stefanovic undoubtedly relying on the fact that Keegan was not charged and police not involved in the matter to find
The Uluru statement is an invitation not a declaration.

Sitting at a road house in Nth East NT - Drunk white lady just walked out of her way across the bar to tell me that she saw the Aboriginal Flag sticker on my car and that I should “F*ck off back to the mission, Half Caste”.
I didn’t realise a sticker could be so triggering.
This ad has left me crying like a dork in public, I know what failure means, what the status quo means. If I could afford to I would take the next 6 weeks off & fight for the Voice, it will do more for my patients than years more of me putting bandaids on a broken system

Yeah, thing is that black/blak is a word that describes us and is connected to our culture. You don’t have to understand BUT you also don’t get to tell us what we are allowed to call ourselves.
Blood quantum has been used by racists for centuries to excuse some of the worse
I would like to say the tone of the debate has improved since this clip aired. Sadly thats not the case.
I thought Australia was better that this.
Fear, hate & misinformation spread by those in our halls of power and by other “leaders”.
We ALL deserve better than that.

Been MIA for a few weeks - Sorry Business for my nanna who passed.
Born Aboriginal into ‘white Australia’
Lived through the depression
Made soldiers boots during WW2
Lifted her entire family out of poverty
2 children, 6 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren
99 years young
We need to address the tone of the debate, we need to talk about the FACTS.
We are PEOPLE, not criminals, rapists and child abusers.
Collectively demonised for political gain and disenfranchised beyond understanding. Lift your game

Tired of putting bandaids on the GAP?
Believe that Indigenous patients & communities would benefit from being heard?
Agree that patients involved in the decision making around their health get better outcomes?

Our history, that of this nation has many things to both be proud of but also to learn from. You don’t need to apologise.
What matters is that we are meaningfully included in the decision making, policy and laws made ABOUT us should nolonger WITHOUT us.

The English language arrived on this continent (Australia) in 1788, white people got off a boat, they, over time met some Aboriginal people which they referred to as ‘blackfellas’.
Aboriginal ppl learned that the opposite of black is white and so EVERYBODY who is not Aboriginal
Jacinta Price attends Freedom Day fest. She sat flanked by two white CLNP members, Asked to have a photo with Paul Kelly, REC a ‘piece to camera’ and left. Wasn’t invited to speak, or maybe declined, wouldn’t mix with mob.
Afraid of the optics of being confronted by angry FN ppl?
Susie and Denis’ home. Denis works full time for QLD health, Susie works part-time also for QLD health.
In addition to working 40h/w Dennis is on call 24/7, 365 days/yr driving the Ambulance and safety for the lone nurse on call.
They also volunteer in their community.

As someone who ACTUALLY casts my vote in remote communities - AEC are professional and that there is no interferance, its just like voting in the city.
The nerve to suggest that we are so stupid, our votes could be bought with a t-shirt is what really hurts, dehunanising, again

@MediaAnalystOz
THIS Jacinta Price? Whom, while taking Dutton a “tour of the Territory” which included Alice and Darwin but none of the 76 remote communities in between and then stood next to him at a presser, decrying the ‘scourge’ of grog while wearing a brewery logo?
@PRGuy17
Forget Albo
I will debate Jacinta, on zoom, from a remote community.
I spent a year living with the Walpiri & more time in remote communities than she ever will. As an Indigenous Remote Area Nurse- I live IN the GAP & understand the VOICE.
Bring it on, no notes, just you and me
I never thought in AUST, I’d have to ask parents if their power is on before I prescribe a child antibiotics. Households here loose power 53 times/year for at least 8hrs. Food & medicines spoil, sick kids get sicker, parents accused of neglect.

Jacinta Price claims she speaks for FN people? She didn’t deign to consort with fellow FN people at Kalkaringi. Received a ‘hostile reception’? How can you speak for us if you won’t listen to us? The hypocrisy of attending a FN event and refusing to consort with FN ppl

Honestly lost a little of my mojo following the referendum, I am currently working with an amazing team of strong, smart, independent women who have heart and are some of the gutsiest people I know.
Sending love and respect to these fearless Remote Area Nurses.
Polling Day for some communities - My vote is cast!
Ran into some deadly mob who were here to support YES and answer any questions for undecided voters who wanted to FIND OUT.
Nobody from the No camp willing to do the same? Shame job!
@MikeCarlton01
I know that by being publicly vocal about racism in Australia that I will be a target. I am a big girl and will no stop because of the threats I receive. I fear for my son. That he could be the next 15 year old with no right place to be in this country.
Kids in community often ask to use my camera. Then disappear with it for a few hours. When I get back to the city I print the photos & send them back.
Always creative and insightful,
this pic says it all…. How could anyone not want to give these guys a Voice for a better future?
Tens of thousands of Australians have marched today in support of recognition through a Voice.
Let this spirit of solidarity carry our nation to a successful referendum next month.

26th January 1938 the first Day of Mourning was held in response to celebrations of the sesquicentenary.
Thats 85 years ago.
Australia Day held on Jan 26th became a national holiday in 1994, just 29 years ago.
Don’t tell me its a long standing tradition that can’t be changed.
THIS IS THE GAP
Out here, dying at 47 (or much younger) is not the exception, its the norm.
How do we achieve self determination when our leaders leave us so young?
Call on gov to urgently address the housing and health crisis NOW!
No
@michellegrattan
it won’t. The problem is not the PM, the problem is that like Governments of the past, many ppl including YOU are talking ABOUT US like we aren’t in the room.
THAT is why we need a Voice.
If the Voice is defeated on Saturday, it will be a devastating rebuff for the prime minister. He’ll have raised Indigenous hopes only to see them dashed. He’ll have led Australians on an arduous journey only to have them desert him before the destination
While I respect the call for a week of silence,
One week for Indigenous Australians represents:
3.4 deaths from suicide
1.4 deaths from RHD
12.2 deaths from chronic kidney disease
11 kids diagnosed with RHD
2.25 deaths of children aged 0-4
So I can’t be silent, even for a week
This NO campaign has been very good for Jacinta Price and Warren Mundine.
Price securing a shadow ministry despite being a first term Senator and now Mundine so close finally holding a seat, a prospect he has been salivating over for decades

@catrollison
The rhetoric of Jacinta Price and Warren Mundine are examples of ‘benefits’ of colonisation.
I will try to explain to the next patient that I diagnose with TB or RHD;

NO, its not a GAP, its a BENEFIT”
Shameful
‘Australia Day” in remote Aboriginal communities.
How is this date commemorated here?
It isn’t
Nothing.
Not even mentioned
Just people who are resigned to the abysmal quality of life inflicted on them by this country getting on with it.
No celebration
no protests
no hope

Former housing minister Bess Price takes job with company she awarded contracts to | NT News
Susie and Denis have ‘pulled themselves up by the boot straps” as demanded by some on our country. They both work hard, contribute to their community, pay their rent and bills. Yet our country still turn its back on them, denying them the same legal protections and human rights.
@RealMarkLatham
Show me.
Show me where in an auditor generals report it states that FN kids miss school due to “avoiding sexual assault by drunk uncles”
You are a disgrace.
To dehumanise FN ppl with lies to promote your own agenda and attempt to make yourself relevant, not even an original lie.
If anyone can help me to support Denis and Susie to seek a resolution with QLD Dept Housing we would be very appreciative.
Denis tells me that whenever he attends or phones his local office they are ‘unavailable’ or don’t call back.
@michellegrattan

Albo, keen for his ‘Redfern speech’ moment, announced the Voice on election night. Leaving mob to defend it for months before circling back. He didn’t just erect the target, he unwittingly fired the first shot.
In a country where we pride ourselves on pulling together to help each other out eg after a natural disaster, it angers me that we do not extend the same ethic towards Aboriginal people in remote communities.
@Kat_Zilla_
One small minded ignorant person won’t ruin my day, I only mention it because ppl say Aust isn’t racist - sometimes it is, this happens a lot esp out bush
Denis and Susie pay rent for this property to the QLD government. A property where doors have fallen off because the screws pulled out of the disintegrating door frames.

Additional noses always welcome in the conversation. I am Indigenous and a Remote Area Nurse (maybe that makes me a little sensitive) I would love the opportunity to have a yarn with you one day about health delivery to remote mob, honestly its soul destroying.
Susie spoke to me a few weeks ago and said,
“We might have to leave work and go build a humpy on Dad’s country, we need to save for solar and a water tank first”
It is a symptom of a bigger problem that Susie thinks that removing themselves from society is a logical solution.
@brobson_politic
Well done. You just virtually guaranteed that if your daughters are the 1 in 5 women who are abused; they will likely not turn to you for help.
@SeanConwayACT
@DrVicFielding
Hi Sean,
I respect that you have questions and as a nurse and an Aboriginal woman who lives in remote communities I would be happy to give you information about how the voice is needed to address the many issues out here.
Promise I won’t call you racist at any point.
@KosSamaras
A voice to parliament will diminish Mundine’s capacity to pretend he speaks for Indigenous ppl, affecting his wealth and power. If there is an Aboriginal Elite, Mundine is their captain.
Mundine, Price, Dillon - all literally make their living by denigrating Aboriginal ppl
Both Susie and Denis have chronic health conditions which are exacerbated by their living environment. I wrote them a letter of support as a health professional to help them plead their case to the department but so far to no avail.
I am an expert in the delivery of primary and emergency healthcare in Remote Communities, the underlying causes, and challenges as well as MY (& only my) experience of being a Blakfella in this colony.
I will never appear in the media claiming to know about something/someone else
Mundine repeating comments made last year.
He is against the voice, but if it succeeds, he wants to be on it.
Well Warren, I reckon that will be hard because the voice will be elected by Indigenous people. We will remember how you threw us under a bus to further your own ambition
It would be great for Warren Mundine to remember this isn’t about him and his career - it’s about the community. Enough of self-appointed leaders & handpicked spokesperson. Time for the community to be heard!

I am disheartened, the vote over but not the work. Called to an emergency around 10, another bandaid applied to the GAP, now some time to reflect as I watch the sun rise.
While the GAP remains - we ARE divided by race.
So a deep breath & back to work, we have a GAP to close.
Dennis is awoken during the night often to attend emergencies. He deserves the ability to sleep in comfort when back home and not on the floor.
Denis said that they have put most furniture and clothing in storage at a friend’s to try to save their possessions.

for the tone you bring to this debate and to parliament. Other politicians could learn a lot from this first term independent. We should all strive to communicate with such grace.

@TracyWesterman
You mean like the culture of violence in Aboriginal communities that was conceived, normalised and perpetuated all in the minds of people who have never set foot on one?
I write as I sit on my front porch at 2 am in a remote community, in the cool of the day feeling safe, relaxed
These issues described relate to the single community of Santa Teresa but are indicative of the housing conditions in all communities in the NT (+WA, SA, QLD) in the NT alone 39K people live in these conditions.
The burden of diseases of poverty stem directly from this
Huge, huge news. The High Court has just ruled that Aboriginal people in remote housing can be compensated for distress and disappointment suffered due to dilapidated housing.
Hard as this tragic story is to read; I want you to read it and I want you to share it.
Its a story of 2 mothers that never gave up, they fought for 37 years for the truth to come out. It took NSW authorities 37 years to admit what happened to these beautiful girls. NSW police

Yet Dutton et al say remote communities are violent.

Already this year I have lost 2 patients under 55, both of whom had “cancer too advanced to treat” by the time proper testing and care was given. I feel like we are doing the work at our end but mob living remote are being sentenced to death through apathy in the city

Someone I love and respect - born in the UK & served 2 tours as an officer during ‘the troubles’ turned to me and asked;
“Why are there no Aboriginal Extremists?”
He has a point. Asking for constitutional recognition is the most assimilatory thing we have ever done and still - NO
These are some pictures of the termite mud and damage to a home in a remote community in FNQ. The landlord is QLD Department of Housing.
They sleep on a mattress on the floor as they feared that the legs of their bed would break through the floor.
Would you pay rent to live here?
@2GB873
Funding already withdrawn, stop gaslighting the Australian public.
It was withdrawn and a statement issues by Senator Wong before Dutton even said boo on the matter.
Late to the party with contrived outrage yet again LNP, Dutton and 2GB
Ray nails it.
Come out to a remote community where groceries cost 60% more, where gov housing leaves 20+ people in 2 bedroom homes, where diseases of poverty are rife & the homes on average have their prepaid power cut off 10 times each year.
Then talk to me about privilege
"In stark contrast, the privilege conferred by the voice accrues to one group and one group only." Heny Ergas in the Oz
Come up to the NT and have a look at the 'privilege' that Aboriginal people have here
Indigenous peoples are calling for a chance for parity not privilege
Thanks

So would you go down from your hotel room and grab those kids and tie them up and then call police?
Sounds like you didn’t, probably because you know that is vigilante crap and not part of the social contract.
Better question - a fair skinned child once threw a rock at me, today
@jailbirdzero
Yes you can - you just did by implying that Albert Namatjira’s watercolours of the Australian landscape are acceptable ‘abo’ art but to paint something else is merely grifting.
Time to rise above your racism, this tweet is an example of me rising above it to discuss the context

I would like to personally offer to debate Bolt.

I am one such person “on the ground”, Aboriginal & a Remote Area Nurse.
Appalled by the lies being told about remote communities.
99% of Australians will never set foot in a remote community, so believe the lies.
The truth - poverty, overcrowding, disease, death and hopelessness
