ー19 is in disarray. Suppression now required for 12-18 months in the hope of a vaccine. 250k deaths the best case scenario. Human and economic impact profound. Jesus wept.
Now most people are going back to work (for now, hopefully for longer!) any chance those of us who have been flat out for 3 months could get a wee furlough?!
My wife, at the request of her doctor, went straight from the GP surgery to Altnagelvin A&E at 4pm. Having waited 6.5 hours, she has given up waiting and just returned home. Said many other patients had walked out, old and young people worried and upset. Hospitals are in crisis.
Best switch your TV off before 10.45pm or risk watching members of the public being harassed in the street by the highest paid celebrity in the country.
Poor, poor form.
Just back from shopping. Tesco, M&S, B&M, Pets At Home, Boots. Not one empty shelf. Got it everything I needed. A waste of time bringing my phone. Raging.
Donegal.
Neighbours, childhood playground, many’s a weekend’s craic. Such a beautiful, wild and dramatic place.
Has any community suffered so many devastating, tragic events at such a scale?!
Heartbroken for the people of Creeslough.
Liam Fox himself called me himself to invite me on the BoT back last May. Liz Truss has someone in her office call to say I wasn’t needed anymore. Regardless of any questionable past views, it seems that ‘belief’ is the main quality required for membership.
The new Board of Trade will play an important role making the case for free and fair trade in 🇬🇧 and 🌍.
The Board brings together a diverse group of people who share Britain’s belief in free enterprise, democracy, high standards and rules-based trade.👇
Thanks for all the comments and compliments on this. Last night was quite the experience. The most powerful man in the world offering to call Carol on our anniversary then making me commit to be “pay back big”. It’s worth every penny.
Days like today we know we’re lucky to have the best newsroom on these islands with
@BBCGarethG
@BBCJayneMcC
@endamcclafferty
@MarkCarruthers7
& their news colleagues. Sharp, informed, incisive. BBC, broadcasting and journalism at its best. Some commentators need to take note.
Inadvertently started the day by tuning in to some shit stirring on my radio, ended it by inadvertently tuning in to shit stirring on my TV. I’d consider ripping up my TV licence only I’m from Derry and likely don’t have one.
Slightly better news. The anti biotics worked and TJs throat infection is clear. We’ve contacted the helpline and they said we are in the clear as a family and can exit our isolation!
Friends, brothers. Huge respect for Christian’s team mates. So often when bad things happen, people pull out their cameraphones. These young guys created a screen. Amazing 👏
Please god Christian makes a full recovery.
So, the teenage son has a throat infection (common) and as a family we've been told to isolate for 14 days given what is going on around us.
Our NHS can fight but only each one of us can defeat this virus. Do what we are told wash your hands and keep your distance!
Thanks so much for all the lovely birthday best wishes. Sorry I’ve not responded, it’s just that now that I’ve celebrated the Silver Anniversary of my 25th birthday I don’t have the energy.
I’m blessed to be surrounded by a great family and friends and home. Love you all.
Good to see our publicly funded media making every effort to unravel the prospects of getting our peace process back on track. Division is an irresistible drug.
“Was Santa good to you?”
He was!
A bastard of a year, but I got what matters. A happy home, a loving wife, a great family, an amazing mum.
You can’t wrap that in shiny paper or a big bow. You don’t keep the receipt. It’s priceless.
Screw you 2020. We won!
Stephen Kelly, Manufacturing NI CEO, on Brexit negotiations: ‘People are losing their jobs and being used as pawns in a game of politics’ via
@mattfrei
Quite overwhelmed by the kindness of so many on here, by calls, texts & mails ❤️
As
@AmandaFBelfast
observed “people being rounded on, demonised, subtly damaged when they dare to do their jobs.” has to stop.
Oh, if you’ve an issue, call and at least fill out those surveys!
Saw this tweet yesterday and the hairs stood on the back of my neck. Such love and affection whilst staring the fear in its face. Rest in peace Aideen.
So life has not gone well and I am as sick as I was as when I went in to hospital so essentially going home to die but getting palliative care. The kids know. If you ever come across them, will you an eye out for them, they are the kindest, sweetest most thoughtful kiddies.
No grandstanding, gaslighting or grabbing headlines, just getting down to business talking through the problems and pitching the solutions. Great to join colleagues in Newry this morning talking technicalities with EU VP Maroš Šefčovič and team on the operation of the NI Protocol
Anyway, people are getting wound up about a certain appointment. The BoT has no policy impact (and no wages) and really just looks after some awards. Certain appointments are there to rile some people up which it will do if you allow it to.
@CarlJWhyte
@StephenNolan
Carl that’s awful. Very sorry. I’ve really no idea why the BBC continue to allow this programme to behave in the way it does. Hurt, harm, agitation, fuel on fires... we’re better than the output provided.
Doing an amazing job for us in Brussels, great to spend just a little time with my good friend
@MichaelAodhan
at the Irish Ambassador to Belgium’s Christmas reception (Kevin Conmy, no stranger to the North himself).
Great story. Jim has run the ‘mobile’ shop just by home since I was very young which is now a long time ago. Always a great and helpful shopkeeper. Glad the guilty made good (for the avoidance of doubt that’s not my handwriting!)
Well-known Derry shopkeeper Jim Barr got the surprise of his life recently when a remorseful mystery punter returned a decades old debt completely out of the blue!
The lady who rang was really pleasant but went silent when I said “of course there’ll be someone from NI there to replace me”. Still waiting on that call back but maybe a search for someone with the right qualities is ongoing.
Power was out for 30 minutes earlier. Had to actually talk to people at home. Apparently I’ve been married for 19 years. She seems a nice lady, I’ll likely hang around.
There’s a major employer with a dominant market position about to slash an entire, multiple awards winning, regional department to save a few quid which they’ll funnel in to a massively inflated, overpaid product which damages us all.
We all lose.

The local ‘lock down’ is to continue for at least another 3 weeks.
This virus is a killer as is poverty, domestic violence and mental health.
The risk of the first of those doesn’t diminish in the next 3 weeks, but the risk of the latter 3 growing does, considerably.

Interesting who has liked or RT’ed this. People from all sides of NI, all backgrounds, political outlook. It’s said twitter doesn’t reflect what’s happening on the ground. Well, neither does the biggest show in the country. People want people to come together. Enough of the shite
Good to see our publicly funded media making every effort to unravel the prospects of getting our peace process back on track. Division is an irresistible drug.
Back in 1998, I pulled together a book to raise money for the NSPCC. With others, John Hume kindly contributed a chapter about his own childhood growing up in Derry.
It’s typically proud, community and character focused.
#RIPJohnHume
Deal analysis, media, 2 cars hand washed, soup made, bread made, Turkey and ham cooked, stuffing made, coulis and meringues ready, veg prepped, presents wrapped.
Can’t wait to get back to work for a rest.
Well, what a week. Every call, text, email felt like another punch in the ribs. People are worried, looking to do what's best and find a way out of this. And, they're very appreciative of those who run to help. 10 rounds down, more to come, just don't ring that bell too soon.
They were also kicked out of a WhatsApp group of (very pro-protocol) NI trade bodies who were invited to speak to Gove/Sefcovic - the RHA Policy bod only learnt about the planned meeting from a BBC journalist's tweet
£50m saved for steel importers and users, competitive advantage secured, steel supplies beginning to flow again to our manufacturers protecting a £2bn industry and tens of thousands of jobs.
Liverpool beat too.
A decent Thursday.
En route to Belfast by train. Roasting hot, in a mask but still parked up in Coleraine for 33 minutes absolutely confirming why I (and most others) prefer taking the car.
Imagine the fire service working away to save your home, full deployment of resources then just as the fire begins to reignite, they’re told that the water bill is getting too expensive and they have to turn off some of their hoses!
Manchester has been battling for us all.
Still reeling from what happened earlier. Powerless at home as a TV spectator to what happened. But this image is more powerful the more I view it. Giving their brother his dignity, shielding him and his family when at their weakest all despite their own distress. Amazing humans
Friends, brothers. Huge respect for Christian’s team mates. So often when bad things happen, people pull out their cameraphones. These young guys created a screen. Amazing 👏
Please god Christian makes a full recovery.
If the reported restrictions are true, the Executive are taking away the means to make an income from some of Derry’s lowest paid and self employed in close contact services who already has 4 months of no money. Plunged further in to poverty. They need direct financial support.
Congratulations to all the graduates, but also to the
@mynwrc
team on a really slick graduation ceremony earlier. Particular thanks to
@leo_murp
on his personal congratulations to one familiar student (and
@niallach
for the pic!)
Came through Moville this afternoon when the Mullan family were being returned. Harrowing sight and harrowing sound of a mother and wife in deep distress. Huge turn out from the local community. Hopefully that brings some comfort.
Every year seems to be marked by a horrendous tragedy on Donegal’s roads. Beautiful place and great people. Such sad images of a lovely family on this evenings news reports.
Shops will be rammed for the next week. R figure rises rapidly in the following 2 weeks leading to either an extended lockdown or open up (with a R rate higher than today) with shops more rammed and R spiking again leading to more lockdowns. Rinse, repeat, only the poor defeated.
Restrictions: my understanding is that health officials believe the right action has been taken and that this makes it likely that “we can get beyond Christmas without further measures, so long as there’s good adherence to basic restrictions when these measures end. “
@BBCNewsNI
Homeward bound after a memorable but productive 5 days in DC.
Those who know, know but big thanks for Peter, Paul N, Andrew, Jayne, Seamus, Chris, Paul M, Susan, Bonnie, Bryan and of course the wife’s new bestie Joe.
If you spend a grand on a TV subscription, £100s on travel to a ‘home’ game, £100s on replica kit and merch and you say “the game is ruined, never be back, never support them again” yet you won’t go watch the team in your own town... then have a word with yourself.
"No one makes anything any more in Derry".
Really?
In the last 24 hours alone I've spoken to businesses who send stuff to China which has come back via Aer Lingus this week as critical protection for front line workers to keep them safe...
Home office cleared out ready for painting, guttering and fascia washed down, two cars washed, 4 hours power washing the paths and driveway, windows cleaned inside and out. Haven’t felt so relaxed in weeks.
Having spent 14 years travelling there, 3 or 4 days a week, I made my first trip to Belfast for a meeting today since 5 March - nearly 5 months! So quiet.
For the record I think that
@ManufacturingNI
