I’m so sad to wake up to the news of Lee Sun-kyun’s passing. Apart from playing a major part in the biggest South Korean film of all time he also gifted us some incredible performances as anti-heroes in A HARD DAY and JO PIL-HO: THE DAWNING RAGE. He will be missed😔 #LeeSunKyun

#NowWatching Takashi Miike’s LUMBERJACK THE MONSTER. If you follow me you probably know that Miike is my favourite filmmaker of all time. I’m never happier than when watching one of his projects for the first time, and his latest just quietly dropped on Netflix! Let’s fucking go!

#NowWatching Danny Boyle’s SUNSHINE. Any fans of this one out there? After loving my overdue rewatch of EVENT HORIZON I thought I’d revisit this similar but very different exploration of the unknown darkness of space. I remember liking it a lot on the big screen back in 2007!

As someone who has been a fan of Bong Joon-ho for well over a decade I actually own very few of his films so when I heard @ArtificialEye were releasing a boxset containing his entire feature filmography except for OKJA I couldn’t press pre-order fast enough! Today it arrived ☺️

Kôji Shiraishi follows up his recent run of bangers with SAYURI, and it looks to me like a full blown modern homage to Takashi Shimizu’s JU-ON: THE GRUDGE! Colour me very fucking excited! @shiraishikouji

#NowWatching Tsui Hark’s GREEN SNAKE. I’ve seen so much of Hark’s action stuff, but very little of his wuxia work and apparently this is one of his best! A sensual, pastel shaded spectacle filled with Buddhist traditions alongside Hark’s usual flair for challenging institutions!

#NowWatching Takashi Miike’s ICHI THE KILLER. Insane camerawork, whiplike editing, dizzying sound design, grimy real life locations, disorienting music drops, disgusting practical effects, and not to mention the controversial messages and themes! Miike’s masterpiece of masochism!

#NowWatching Kim Jee-woon’s A BITTERSWEET LIFE. For me this is the third corner of Kim’s trinity of 5 star masterpieces alongside A TALE OF TWO SISTERS and I SAW THE DEVIL. A mix of crime drama, revenge thriller, and spaghetti western all within an incredible Korean setting!

#NowWatching Atsushi Muroga’s JUNK. It’s a tale as old as time. Four crooks rob a jewelery shop then head to an abandoned factory to fence the goods to the Yakuza. Unfortunately, it happens to be the same place where scientists have been experimenting on resurrecting the dead 😂

#NowWatching Paul W.S. Anderson’s EVENT HORIZON. I’ve been playing heaps of DEAD SPACE lately, and since it’s basically the video game of this film I’ve been craving a rewatch! No other horror came close to scaring me as much as this one did when I was a kid. HELLRAISER in space!

#NowWatching Lee Chung-Hyun’s BALLERINA. Nobody serves up revenge thrillers quite like South Korea, and the last time Lee and Jun Jong-seo collaborated together was on the incredible serial killer K-horror THE CALL so I’m really excited to see what they cooked up together here!

#NowWatching Yoshihiro Nishimura & Naoyuki Tomomatsu’s VAMPIRE GIRL VS FRANKENSTEIN GIRL. From the makers of TOKYO GORE POLICE comes this wildly over the top J-Splatter! The tagline states “Two classic monsters. One fucked up movie” and that is basically all I needed to hear 😅

#NowWatching Kiyoshi Kurosawa’s SWEET HOME. This is a first watch of a very early film from one of my favourite directors of all time! Apparently it was the film that inspired the original RESIDENT EVIL game franchise & it looks absolutely nuts! So excited for this #Japan #Horror

I’m 38 years old today! Sorry for the thirsty photos but there was a time where I genuinely didn’t think I was going to make it to 30 thanks to addiction & depression. I’m now in the best shape of my life with a 2 year old daughter & a bright future ahead of me. Life is crazy 🤪

#NowWatching Takeshi Kitano’s VIOLENT COP. This is one of my favourite directorial debuts of all time! Kitano came out the gate fully formed as an uncompromising force in bleak nihilism & violent expressionism! The making of the film is just as crazy as the final feature! #Japan

#NowWatching Juno Amal’s RIGOR MORTIS. This one looks fucking cool! A full blown Hong Kong horror that infuses the jiangshi and black magic films of the 80s with the spirit of 90s/00s J-horror, complete with ghosts, vampires, and what looks like a lot of other crazy shit! I’m in!

#NowWatching Mo Hong-jin’s MISSING YOU. This South Korean serial killer thriller is supposed to be fantastic! A little girl who lost her father to a serial killer 15 years ago plans for his release, whilst a suspecting detective follows the killer once he’s set free #SouthKorea

#NowWatching Shin’ya Tsukamoto’s A SNAKE OF JUNE. My personal favourite. It is Tsukamoto at his most human and vulnerable, and despite the coldness of the monochrome it is undoubtably his warmest work to date. I adore every soaking wet minute of this surreal and sensual thriller!

Waking up to the news of Yûko Takeuchi’s death by presumed suicide has really saddened me. She was iconic as Tomoko in the opening scene of RINGU back in ‘98 but was so damn good just a few years ago in Kiyoshi Kurosawa’s CREEPY as well. She was so talented & will be missed x

#NowWatching Yasunori Urata’s NINJA RESURRECTION. This 2 part OVA has absolutely nothing to do with Yoshiaki Kawajiri’s NINJA SCROLL, although you would think it did with how they marketed it! It’s based on Futaro Yamada's novel Makai Tensho set in the time of the Tokugawa regime

#NowWatching Alfred Cheung’s ON THE RUN. This 80s Hong Kong ‘heroic bloodshed’ noir is supposed to be bleak as fuck & gritty as hell! Yuen Biao plays a cop who uncovers a dangerous conspiracy involving his superiors & goes on a high stakes cat & mouse chase where no one is safe!

#NowWatching Hirokazu Kore-eda’s BROKER. This has been one of my most anticipated films of the year & after watching all 14 of Kore-eda’s previous features back-to-back over the last couple of weeks I could not be more ready for it! Kore-eda in Korea just makes sense 🥰 #Broker

#NowWatching Park Hoon-Jung’s NIGHT IN PARADISE. I have a lot of time for Park’s films. They tend to be bleak, violent & really stylish mixtures of multiple bloody genres, all of which adds up to being 100% my jam! This one sounds like another smash! #SouthKorea #NightInParadise
