13 yrs ago, when I first started writing, I lived on a farm & couldn’t afford a laptop, so I wrote my first screenplay on this secondhand blackberry. This year, that same screenplay was picked up by a US producer for their 2022 development slate. Don’t despise small beginnings.

I entered the exact, same script in 6 screenplay contests in a single year. NO CHANGES. Here’s what happened, in order: Comp 1 - No placing. Comp 2 - 2nd round. Comp 3 - Quarter finals. Comp 4 - Semi finals. Comp 5 - Finals. Comp 6 - I won. Draw your own conclusions.

ART CAN CHANGE THE WORLD The tallest tree in Wales got damaged by a storm and was supposed to be cut down, instead chainsaw artist Simon O'Rourke found a better solution to symbolize the tree’s last attempt to reach the sky. This moves me in a way I can’t explain.

What this says is, if it took that many rewrites in a professional script development environment with pro writers and proper budgets just to get to a good, shootable draft, stop being so F-ing critical of yourself and others about their early drafts with none of those resources.

Saw a post by a writer who just finished draft 1 of his 1st screenplay & was asking advice on how to sell it. I advised him to get notes from experienced readers & to rewrite several times, then put the script aside & write 2 more. He said that wasn't the advice he was seeking.

#screenwriting TIP: I like to create floor plans for my script locations & gather pictures of what they look like on Pinterest. It helps me visualize the space & the characters movements within the space. I can also choose my scene settings more intelligently. #WritingCommunity

IMHO the script you’re currently writing, that you’re determined to sell, & are convinced will start a bidding war, might not sell, but it may be the script that gets someone to say, “Hey, this person can write” or, “So what else have you got?”, & in my book, both are solid wins.

#screenwriting tip: #WritingCommunity beware of the phrase: “He/she realizes...” We use it to absolve ourselves of the responsibility to construct a visible plan of action for a character. Instead of making the character work to find an answer, they magically “realize” it.

YASSS!!! I DID IT! I can’t believe it. I’ve finally finished the rewrite of my feature and I’ve sent it off to my manager. I was dubious I could pull the notes off, but I’m soooo pleased with the results. The script has taken a quantum leap forward. What a way to start 2021!

If we’re giving someone notes, we should respect their sense of story and strive to help them tell THEIR story better, and not try to force them to tell the story the way we think it should be told. After all, it’s their story, not ours.

Great news #WritingCommunity . The producers and commissioning editor loved the work I did on the series bible, it’s been approved, we launch the story room on Monday. I’m so relieved and excited. It really was worth putting in all that extra work and sacrifice.

SOME GOOD NEWS TODAY My UK director/producer is happy with the fleshed-out outline I sent him. I’m moving on to first draft of the script. Also, a script I wrote in 2019, that was selected to be pitched at the Berlin Film Festival, will finally go into production in Jan 2022.
