My 75-yo dad submitted to his first-ever lit mag today! I encouraged him to send to many places, so he won't get discouraged by a rejection. He said, "I don't see how they could possibly reject it. This is a great story." ☺🤞

Am thinking of starting a Lit Mag Reading Club. Each month, we'll read a lit mag & discuss. At the end of the month, an editor (& maybe a few contributors) would come & answer Q's from readers. If you are an editor & would like to participate, lmk! You'll get tons of readers!

Suffice it to say, I owe Dawn Dorland an apology. I’m sorry for the role I played here. I’m sorry I didn’t make a greater attempt to learn her side of the story. And most of all, I am sorry I did not intervene to de-fuse a situation that I believe did not have to come to this.

@pronounced_ing @FlippyO @basilisssky @andriedeja @buoyant_quartz @GrubWriters @dawndorland @SonyaLarson The only situation I've been determined to misunderstand is the one that allowed lies about a perfectly lovely human being to persist among us for years. If you're looking for more to say about it, you can start with "I'm so unbelievably sorry."

@RottenInDenmark I completely lost sight of @dawndorland 's humanity. I let myself characterize her as some kind of cartoonish evil monster. She is nothing of the sort. She deserves none of this. I remain sorry, and am doing what I can to repair the damage I have caused her.

I also want to acknowledge that Dawn was a student at Grub Street (where I have also been a student & teacher, and where I am now a consultant). There is no world in which any student should feel anything other than nurtured and protected when they sign up for a writing class.

When editors announce winners of a contest or contributors to a new issue without notifying everyone who submitted about the status of their work, it is not cool. Editors, please communicate with your submitters first and foremost. Writers have trusted you with their work!

Just a suggestion, but one cool thing @GrubWriters could do right now is appoint an intern to focus exclusively on combating false information that continues to circulate about @dawndorland . It would be an education in citizen journalism. And good god this is the least we can do.

@EllasBurning I agree. Dawn is a kind person who became a scapegoat for reasons I'm still working to understand. It might have something to do with The Patriarchy. But I'm not sure. Perhaps @stevealmondjoy can explain the patriarchy to me. Preferably in the context of my narcissism.

A writer who works hard & publishes in dozens of journals should be commended. That is awesome! A writer who focuses on a few works, submits to only most exclusive magazines & waits patiently for responses, should be commended. That is awesome! Not complicated.

When lit mags fold so many people wring their hands and opine about the death of culture, etc. But honestly, if people don't read lit mags, subscribe to them, share work in them, ask libraries, bookstores and MFA programs to purchase subscriptions...what is the expected outcome?

Personally, my favorite thing to see in a writer's bio is a mix of well-known & unknown publications. Like, so-and-so has published work in The New Yorker, Dog Whistle Review, Ploughshares and Nut & Bolts Quarterly. I think it shows humility, hustle & moxie.

Meet Beyond Words Magazine. To submit one poem or one prose piece (<1,000 words), the cost is $18. To submit one story <7,000 words and get feedback, the cost is $340. There is no masthead on the website. There is no editor name anywhere. Unbelievable.
