Rare footage of Sheikh ‘Usman Siraj ad-Din of Biyara (b. 1896) on his beloved horse. The sheikh was instrumental in spreading ‘ilm throughout Kurdistan and even in the region as a whole. He resisted Shi‘ification especially in regions southern regions like Hawija.

'Jirab al-Kurdi' was a satirical magazine first published in 1908 in Haifa, then over time in Damascus in the 20s. It touched everything from social topics to criticism of rising European influence. The name "The Kurdish Knapsack" was a simile for the goat-skin bags of the Kurds.

Ibn al-Qass (d. 965) the Shafi‘i Faqih authored this Risalah on the Hadith of the child whose sparrow was dead and was consoled by the Prophet ﷺ, extracting 66 benefits from it. This was after Mu‘tazilah criticized traditionists for narrating “useless stuff like this.”

A humble person is often called "down to earth" in English. Humilty is called "تواضع" in Arabic, which is connected to the earth. Likewise in Kurdish, one is called "خاکی" (lit. of the soil). Every culture at its core reconizes of what we're made.

It's bizarre and a flex at the samr time that Kurdistan is the only landlocked Shafi'i country. Fun fact: Ibrahim al-Marani was from the Hadhabani scholarly family of Maranis who were invited to Egypt by Salah ad-Din was a muhadith voyager. He passed away in the Indian ocean!

“Why I chose the Shafi‘i school?” -By the man from Bagh, Reviver of the Sunnah Husayn bin Mas‘ud al-Farra’ (d. 1122). The Shafi‘i school championed Hadith so much that Shafi‘is were uniquely known as ‘Ashabul Hadith’ in the Greater Khorasan. Guided by reason & revelation.

The Turkish state is a big piece of **** for making Kurdish high schoolers choose between their language vs their religion, as they can only have one optional subject. Not that they actually teach anything of weight, but it is symbolic of what Turkey has stood for over the years.

Among non-Kurdish scholars who interacted with Kurds regularly & issued edicts regarding them is Sh. ‘Abdul-Karim ad-Dabban. Most of them are pre-modern scholars. Bringing past fatawa from unfamiliar scholars is fruitless here. The maxim goes, “Fatwas differ with time AND place.”

About the reasons for his conviction that Shari'ah was abandoned, he lists: Widespread killing, promiscuity, drunkenness in the state. He also adds discrimination against fellow Kurds, that is paid no consideration to. His actions were based on the Quran.

It's authentically narrated from the Prophet that he wore Kurdish clothes. From the narration itself and the one preceding it recorded in Sunan Abu Dawud, we can know that he preferred it over a fancier one because the of its lack of embroidery/patterns.

He was told to ask for forgiveness infront of Ismet Inonu, he replied "I ask forgiveness from God, I have done nothing to beg you people." Now consider this, Inonu AND the "judge" who executed him were both Kurds (albeit sellouts) just like Sh. Said. What separated them? Islam.

Ar-Ramli Sr. is an amazing scholar, his knowledge of the trivium is apparent when you read his words. He didn’t take up teaching out of respect for his longevous master Zakariya al-Ansari who lived till 100, but he was his favorite student & allowed direct access to his library.

Important document of a classified direct order of Reza Shah to the minsitry of war. In it he orders "strict prohibition of teaching in Kurdish & Turkish" and "measures to completely outlaw those languages in Iran". This is the stuff we had to deal with, smh.

An Andalusian scholar in awe of 1228 CE Erbil. al-Fath Abu Nasr bin Musa the Umayyad was a distinguished master of many arts. Fate would have him 5000 miles away from his birthplace in Hawler, which was at the time a booming city of the era under al-Muzzafar of the Ayyubids.

May God have mercy on Sheikh al-Islam Zakariya al-Ansari, one must be living under a rock not to appreciate his vast knowledge. One of the great intellects of the ummah. He wrote in every science & excelled at it, just look at the students he produced & what they wrote about him.

A multi-volume compilation of epistles by the interesting figure Mulla Ibrahim Gorani (d. 1690) the magnet of scholarship in Madinah I came across in a Kurdish bookstore💔 His students in the archipelago helped spread Islam there. Neglected Kurdish ‘ulama deserve way more!

A newly printed collection of nine essays by past Kurdish ‘Ulama’ on the topic of Propositions in Logic. Most of them are by Erbilian scholars and a few by scholars of Eastern Kurdistan, edited by Dr. Luqman Bahrkayi. Incredible endeavor.

Here's a short story: It's known that Marwan II's mother was Kurdish and hence in his last attempt he gathered his armies in the land of the Kurds in leading to battle of “The Great Zab” just like how Abdurrahman would find refuge in his Berber mother's homeland.

It breaks my heart that less than a century ago we used to have astronomy as a subject in our madrasahs in Kurdistan, now in the 21st c. we have it neither in school nor university. Pic: M. Abdul-Qadir Bani Abbasi, one of the last traditional astronomy professors, died recently.

The mastery reached by non-Arabs in the Arabic language is a marvel! The Basran school of grammarians (dominated by non-Arabs) eclipsed the Kufan school. Abdul-Qahir Gurgani is the father of rhetoric as a field of inquiry. Ibn Hajib al-Kurdi’s grammar textbook are seminal.

One of the fascinating facts about our village is that in its graveyard, lies the tomb of a certain Abdullah Andalusi. He was a Derwêş who apparently emigrated from the expulsion of moriscos in Andalus and somehow ended up in the plains of Erbil in the village of Shex Sherwan.

27 years ago today, M. Muhammad Rabi‘i was assassinated by the Iranian regime in the campaign of “chain assassinations” carried out by them. His death left a big gap in the Kurdish Sunni leadership of Iran.
