📢building in public
🛠️growing your product
🚀launching on product hunt
Building in public doesn’t mean extreme transparency all the time, risking your customers and business
It is a broad philosophy of sharing, has many flavors and you can create the one that works for you!
The first few weeks of building an audience is building the habit of showing up 📈
Our advice on how to build a Twitter audience is “post 3x DAILY for at least a month” without expecting huge numbers
Habits first, outcomes later 💪
Building in public helps you put in reps & build muscles on:
🚀shipping products
⚖️staying accountable to goals
🎙️handling PR & media
🔣handling a multiple of inputs (often from customers or potential customers)
🎭the art of storytelling
😉the thick skin to be a founder
😎 Evaluate your personality on Twitter
Are you someone who gives more than who takes?
Givers are 10x more likely to build and keep an audience
A sarcastic viral tweet may bring attention, but not audience
Be a giver, root for others, open up your DMs and help people
Build In Public
is not: ❌
- a gimmick to go viral
- a shortcut to fame
- a ploy to get users
is: ✅
- sharing stories (wins/lessons)
- being authentic and vulnerable
- rallying a community around your cause
Build in public takes time, intention, and consistency.
Top non-obvious benefits if you build in public as a founder:
(Even if you gain 0 followers, it’s worth it)
✅ Feedback loop for product direction
✅ Ability to develop thick skin
✅ Storytelling practice
✅ Clarity in thinking
✅ A top voice in your niche
Compounding isn’t just for finance
Think of your content the same way📈
Charlie Munger was onto something:
the magic happens when we let the process work, uninterrupted🔥
Keep adding value, keep sharing, and witness the compounding magic 💪
Here’s what you can share when building in public:
✅ share an interesting opinion abt your niche
✅ share a few top tools you use
✅ share a customer quote
✅ share a common myth
✅ share a lesson
✅ share a win
What to post if you have less than 1000 followers on Twitter?
Less:
❌really long threads like big accounts
❌platitudes or pithy tweets like Naval
More:
✅ high-intent replies under big accounts
✅ one-off tweets sharing your expertise
What if someone steals your ideas?
You can't control copycats
All your favorite startups have them
Get used to it & focus on users
You’ll never NOT have competition.
The way to win? Be authentic & tell your unique story:
“Escape competition through authenticity.” —
@naval
Limitless? Maybe not
But we often underestimate our true potential
Let's break free from self-doubt and aim for the stars
Believe in your capacity to achieve greatness!
Virality is overrated 🤔
Utility is underrated 💡
✍️Be helpful and specific with your content
Add value to a core (tiny) niche group of people that builds more credibility and unlocks sales than sheer “likes” alone
When building in public, showing not only your successes but also your failures is what makes you genuine and relatable.

Most outbound messages and cold DMs are a tragedy.

🧲Here’s how to build an audience who trust you

📢 Build in public
Don't count other people's subscribers, money or trophies and feel bad
Life is not a race and you have no clue about the struggles behind those stats
Be proud of your own journey & small wins
Impact > impressions.
What building in public is NOT:❌
•An excuse to brag
•Live streaming stuff even you wouldn't watch
•Sharing made-up stories
•Pretending like you know all the answers
•Oversharing
•Dunking on others
•Sharing sensitive data
People can see through BS; be authentic
The Major key for those who are building in public
Trust > Credibility > Attention
You can hack the latter two by gimmicks or short-term plays but you can't hack trust!
How to turn your ideas into products:
🤔 Zoom out & ask important questions
😍 Believe in compound interest
✔️ Acknowledge mistakes
🧠 Upgrade your self talk
🦹♀️ Manifest your identity
⏰ Upgrade your habits

Can't wait to watch you "take more shots" and build in public more consistently and fearlessly in the next few weeks :)
Build in public 💡
Let people know what you are building way before you have an MVP
Use a landing page to share your thesis & attract the right users
Make it clean, easy to digest and just high-level 🤩
Want to excel at building in public?
The real secret is to keep “taking shots” on the goal and making moves
Remember, it's the action and effort you put in that counts, not just the end result 💪
If you can handle rejection ... which is a life skill for founders anyway
Building in public is a no-brainer 🚀
Directly get feedback on whatever you are building
It’s wild how powerful it is 🤩
Building In Public Tip

:
Build social capital
Genuinely contribute under posts of influencers you admire
Be a giver; credibility follows
Building in public starts with giving

BIPF4 enrollment opens today 🎉
After 3 incredible cohorts of the 'Build In Public Fellowship'
@BIPF_
this year, we're now opening doors to the next wave of ambitious founders and leaders who want to go from OBSCURITY to AUTHORITY online in just 6 weeks.
Tip for ambitious people: 💡
Don’t attach your happiness to AFTER meeting your goals
Find little ways to keep yourself happy, curious and grateful along the journey
The final prize is never guaranteed. But peace along the way can be

Would love your support on PH 🙏
It has been and always will be a pleasure to witness your growth in BIPF1
@buildwithmaya
and this is just the beginning of a truly promising journey 🚀💫🤩
When I first joined
@BIPF_
, I had no idea what to expect.
I didn’t even know who
@thisiskp_
was because I didn’t have a Twitter account 😂I was just a new founder looking for guidance.
But now, I can easily say that joining BIPF was one of the best decisions of my life, and
❌ Building a high number of followers is NOT what you really want
A low trust X account is useless
✅ Having ambitious founders & CEOs who trust you is way more important
In your career, the latter matters more
How do I balance building vs building in public?
Product development drives progress, but sharing your journey creates momentum
Usually you can aim for 50-50 balance but pick a ratio that makes sense to you!
Creating a compelling bio?
Make sure it has these 3 components:
1⃣ Clearly state who you aim to serve
2⃣ What people can expect to gain from following or connecting w/ you
3⃣ Credentials, testimonials, or experiences that demonstrate your expertise or reliability
The BIGGEST hurdle you’ll face in your BIP journey is:
YOUR own inner voice telling you that this is pointless
Especially if you don’t see quick results
How to overcome this: 🤔
→Stop looking at metrics
→Be patient
→Focus on intrinsic motivation
→Focus on intangible wins

🔑 BIP should start with the why
The key is to deeply understand why you want an audience
If it’s just for selfish reasons, you’re likely to struggle
Always look for a win-win
Ask yourself: What can I help my audience achieve by nature of following me?
❓ Have a deep why

#4
:
Fear less, create more! 💪
Creativity flourishes in abundance 🌱
Don't fear judgment; embrace the process 🧡
The more you create, the more refined your voice becomes.
❌ Building in public is not just about making noise
✅ Building in public is about
- opening doors
- creating real connections
- making genuine interactions
Ways to maximize the value of your content:
1️⃣ Dive back into what you've written; there's more gold there
2️⃣ Switch formats; a short post can become a detailed guide
3️⃣ Edit with fresh eyes for different platforms
Pro Tip: Write once, but let it sail more than once. 🔥
Sounds crazy but I'm already booking calls with a few fellows for the next

💡How to overcome self-doubt
- think like a teacher who wants to share your knowledge
- acknowledge that self doubt is part of the journey
- focus more on sharing an act of service than an audition for your talents
- think less about impressing but more of those who need help
Most people who are trying to building in public suffer from:
The weight of big ambitions and grand audience growth fantasies 📈
Instead, focus on the lightness that comes from finding joy in the journey and celebrating every small win 🤩
Stuck at step 0 of your content for today?
Stop overthinking it. Use one of these 7 ideas to end your writers' block:

☝️If you can afford only 30 min a day of free time, and you work in startups,
you should go all in on Twitter and build your journey in public
No other platform comes close for the long term ROI & the ability to influence ambitious entrepreneurs ✨
NOTE: Building in public taps into the power of Internet’s serendipity which tends to attract the right people into your orbit AND that can be life changing✨
Uh oh, your tweet got 100 views ONLY? 🤔
Are you bummed? You should be HYPED 🤩
Most founders creating content on Twitter don't understand this but ...
having a massive audience & views is cool but make sure you have lots of high-quality leads in there too
💡 Leads > views
A few more shoutouts 🔥🔥

pod episode dropping this afternoon!
Featuring 4 of the most promising fellows from the 3rd cohort of
@BIPF_
, to tell us how building in public changed the trajectory of their journey online!
Here's a teaser for you 👇
3 steps to convert your Build in Public content into actual customers:
1️⃣Grab Attention:
Hook w/ captivating headlines & engaging stories
2️⃣Build Trust:
Share, teach, & most importantly, be real
3️⃣The Pitch:
Extend an offer w/o the hard sell
Make it an invitation, not a push
How do you measure if your "build in public" content is working or not?
This can be tricky if you aren't careful and can crush your spirit
After 38K tweets, getting over 48K followers,
@thisiskp_
has learned some valuable insights on this
Here are the 4 things he'd go for ⤵️
Thrilled to welcome our newest fellow,
@rahulkahani
, who's ready to take his build in public journey to the next level with BIPF3! 🎉
If you want to hop in too, hit that application link below and let’s bring your dreams projects to life in public 💪
Building in public is an intentional practice of creating & sharing your startup’s story w/ vulnerability in order to attract like-minded people into your orbit
It's writing your own autobiography as a founder one post at a time
📌 This is a critical skill for modern founders!
Which niche should you pick?
On one of BIPPF's sessions,
@thisiskp_
shared a valuable tip on how you can choose a niche (applies to podcasts, newsletters, etc.)
Here's the formula:
This is
@thisiskp_
’s
#1
early stage founder tip:
Your startup is dead by default (to people who have millions of things going in their lives)
It is your job daily to resurrect it & make it worth remembering
💡One unwritten rule in growing your startup:
Create meaningful connections and network on a daily basis
How? 🤔
Through building your startup’s story in public! 📢
💡Why you should get better at BIP
-Every startup is a media company too; be your own PR machine
-Build attention & trust
-Let compound interest build a warm audience for you for launch
-No instant results but the journey of growth is worth it
-Build a world class network
2️⃣ Resonance
In stead of instant virality, I look for a more nuanced metric: Did this resonate?
Not superficial praise but you will attract earnest reactions from your audience (however small they may be) This can be in replies or DMs
Ex:
My latest
@buildinpublic_
episode with
@louispereira
is seemingly resonating a LOT
This is like the 8th DM about the interview since it went live
Why?
I believe it’s bc of our authentic chemistry as builders, Louis’ willingness to talk about his failures and laugh about
When you want to get better at something
“Approach it with non-judgmental curiosity”
Your aim should be NOT to save face or look smart.
But to actually do stuff boldly & make progress week over week 💪
In due time, you’ll be world class 🏆
Gearing up for our
@BIPF_
3rd cohort kickoff today
10 ambitious and generous founders are joining this one
6 weeks of shared lessons, growth experiments and a deep connection with each other
Can’t wait 🔥🔥🔥
Twitter isn't just a megaphone, it's a two-way radio
💡Engaging > Broadcasting every time
Spend more time replying than just tweeting; dive into those threads and cultivate deeper connections 😇
Shoutout and welcome to
@officialtaras
who's joining the 2nd cohort of
@BIPF_
He's a serial founder now building Check it out 👀
Can't wait to see him take more shots and have fun building and iterating :)
Our favorite content on Twitter has 3 main ingredients / elements:
🎯 unexpected / awe-inducing
🎯 helpful / actionable
🎯 respectful (given how deep it is)
What else? What would you add as the 4th one (if you have to pick)?
What does building in public actually mean?
@alexisohanian
, once said on an interview:
“In the simplest form, building in public is just sharing as you go.”
For
@thisiskp_
"It's writing your own autobiography as a founder or builder one tweet/social media post at a time."
Most people use the concept of "building in public" the wrong way and wonder why it doesn't work:
Here is the 3R framework we'd advice you to focus on:
(with the descending order of priority)
- Relationships
- Reputation (and building trust)
- Reach (attention, distribution)
TRUST is the biggest benefit of building in public.
If you do sales, you know how important it is to earn trust.
Attention can be hacked but trust is 100x harder.
It's built by depositing small bits of goodwill for a long time.
