I've analysed this lingustic and culture disconnect through the word itself. غريب means weird. غرب means the West. Not only does this term describe my experience, it connects me to a longer history of arab migration, which has historically tended to be westerwards/northwards.

I'm gonna say it. Syrian refugees do pose an existential threat to Lebanon, not in some 'great replacement' sense, but in the fact that the way we are responding to their presence is fundamentally altering our souls. Lebanon is becoming an incredibly ugly place.

The only hope in Lebanon, and indeed anywhere, is a broad class-based mobilization with Syrian and Palestinian workers, against our sectarian and imperialist overlords. This, for the time being, remains an idealistic vision. But I see no other alternative.

The endless barrage of comments to this by Lebanese people foaming at the mouth about Syrian refugees is honestly sickening. Ignoring all the bull about Syria being safe, its just pure hatred, racism, and calls for violence and expulsion of an incredibly vulnerable group.

I dont know if I mentioned, but my wedding was in June. It took me 6 months to build the courage to post them. I couldnt have done it without the support of my loved ones, my queer family, and amazing friends. Here's looking to a 2022 of new possibilities.
