It’s the 1760s. A strange new instrument is sweeping European high society.
The man who invented it? A Philadelphian.
Let’s learn more in my 150th(!!!!) Headlines of Yore thread…
Starting with a headline from today’s London Public Advertiser in 1762:
“The Armonica”
🧵...
just woke up everyone in my house to tell them that Mark Bartelstein of Priority Sports negotiated this deal. they can't believe it. we're screaming, pounding on the walls. neighbors scared.
today i was walking down the street and a teen rolled down the window and yelled "merry christmas, sir." all the other teens in the car started laughing. it's not even an insult and it cut me to the core
At 7:30 tonight, Philadelphia will Sporgasm.
I *believe* this is the first Sporgasm in city history.
In other words, it is the first time the Phillies, Flyers, Sixers, Eagles, and Union have had simultaneous, overlapping seasons.
#historic
If the Phillies can keep their season going until Tuesday, Philadelphia will achieve Sporgasm — a term I just made up for when all Five major teams are playing at the same time.

when other qbs go to the bench they stare at those little tablets, hoping the tape will somehow solve their problems.
when jalen hurts goes to the bench he stares straight ahead and thinks about how he's going to take your soul.
I understand agents have a lot of power. But the check on that power is the players themselves -- what they want.
Maxey is about to inherit a huge role on a good team. If his agent is trying to get him traded to exact revenge...he should get a new agent.
Jalen Brunson -- who spends most of his time pivoting in circles -- has taken 15 free throws this series.
Tyrese Maxey -- who relentlessly attacks the rim -- has taken 8.
Asked about the 2-minute report, Tom Thibodeau says he’s more concerned about ‘the 46-minute report.” Says that he knew refs couldn’t call fouls there because of the way they officiated Jalen Brunson during Game 2.
Ben Simmons not playing last year may turn out to be a franchise-saving moment for the Sixers.
Absolutely no way you could trade him today for a player like Harden. Don't care how many picks you add.
Harden had 27, 12, and 8 last night.
In their careers *combined*, Fox, Haliburton, Brogdon, Sexton, VanVleet, Jerami Grant, and DLo have done that...two times.
Twice.
That's why you wait.
In his two seasons *combined*, Paul Reed played 479 regular season minutes.
Gabe Vincent and Max Strus each played 500+ minutes in their *first* full seasons with Miami.
Now ask yourself why Paul seems to make more rookie mistakes than Miami's young guys.
And it was all made possible by Maxey waiting an extra year for his extension so the Tobias contract could expire. He took a risk for the entire team. PG and Daryl owe him big time.
The PG signing is the final financial gift of finding Tyrese Maxey with the 21st pick. It was his $13m cap hold that allowed the Sixers to get max space.
Philadelphia has now lost 7 consecutive Game 7s (76ers 4, Flyers 2, Phillies 1).
That's the longest Game 7 losing streak by a metro area in MLB/NBA/NHL history.

Montgomery County --one of PA's largest -- says it will begin counting mail-in ballots at 7 a.m. on Tuesday morning and continue counting 24/7 until all votes are tallied.
Hilarious to me watch 40-year-olds call Jared McCain corny because of his tiktoks. My man. You. Are. Old. The fact that you think it's corny is exactly what makes it cool.
A year ago, Jimmy Butler shot 29% from the field in a first-round sweep. He was a -86 in 4 games.
Heat didn't overreact because they'e a smart franchise with a big-picture perspective.
Sixers would be wise to do the same imo
In 1923, a bomb ripped through a Northwest Philadelphia home.
This event, improbably, has ties to Benito Mussolini and the most famous Pennsylvanian on earth.
How?
I'll explain in the thread below...
In addition to being condescending this is just factually wrong. He just played Paul Reed against the Raptors, Pacers and Pistons…Three teams he sat Paul Reed against within the last month.
Did those teams change in size?
That's when a Pennsylvania-born singer burst onto the music scene.
Her name? Taylor Swift.
Her connection to this story?
She is C.C.A. Baldi's great-great granddaughter.
End Thread.
Bryan Colangelo's drafting record with the Sixers has to be one of the worst two-year drafting runs in NBA history.

YOU, NORMAL: The Bucks hiring Doc Rivers is good because he's proven to be a bad playoff coach and the Bucks are one of our main rivals.
ME, TORMENTED: The possibility of losing to Doc Rivers in the playoffs will haunt my every waking thought.

On this day 50 YEARS AGO...a turning point in Philadelphia history.
The Inquirer announces that
@6abc
will debut a new theme song for Action News called...
"Move Closer to Your World."
Our city was never the same.
A hopeful thought for the Sixers offseason....
With a healthy Embiid, Harden, and Maxey, you basically only need one type of player to fill out the roster:
Reasonably athletic wings who can shoot 3s.
And the good news is...those players are becoming easier to find...
Btw Morey was right that the new CBA would kill the market for role players. Getting a back-end starter for 8 mil a year is wild. A lot of guys on rookie deals make more than that.
Just started following Batum's wife and she's extremely online. I have no idea what she's saying cuz it's all in French. But I know a true poster when I see one.
Thought it was a nice gesture for Sheryl Lee Ralph to thank the minority chair of the Pennsylvania Senate Appropriations committee in her acceptance speech
Over the last four seasons, only one NBA player has started more games than Tobias Harris. And NO ONE has played more minutes.
Remarkably durable and productive player.
Not a star. But also not easy to replace.
It’s a silly game. Sure. But he left home when he was a kid…chasing a dream. Went through a gauntlet of personal and professional setbacks. And came out the best in the world.
A hero’s journey.
Philly getting drenched with the kind of life-sustaining rain you simply don't get in LA. if i were an NBA star i'd sure prefer a place with climactic diversity
Orix Buffaloes star Masataka Yoshida has stated that he wants to be posted.
The face of the franchise since he debuted in 2016, Yoshida is an on-base machine (career .421) who's coming off his first 1.000 OPS season, and put up a 201 wRC+.

Mr. Lillard this is the US Mint building in Philadelphia, PA.
As Philadelphians we have the sovereign power to put your face and “Dame D.O.L.L.A” on ANY PIECE OF CURRENCY!
Please consider!
@Dame_Lillard
On Embiid's massive fourth-quarter three to put the Sixers up 5, Jokic and Murray both blatantly attempted to kick the ball.
Had it worked...it would've prevented a *huge* play.
If the NBA wants to actually disincentivize kicked balls, it has to up the penalty.
I commute daily in and out of downtown Philly by bike. On bad weather days, I opt for Septa. Regardless of my choice of transportation, the scariest part is how impatient people are in their cars. Everyone is in a rush and that always leads to bad decisions & worse consequences.
As the Sixers prepare to open the season tonight without Ben Simmons, a contract rep tells Action News the team might have a stronger position than we think.

Wait...is this a thing ppl think?
The Sixers were +53 in Embiid's minutes during that series. The Hawks had a 109.7 offensive rating...way worse than their regular season mark and actually worse than their performance in the next round against the Bucks.
I will not pretty much everyone gets cooked in drop outside of Brook, Jaren, Turner, a few others. The Hawks beat the Sixers because of Joels' drop. It's an inherently flawed scheme vs. guards with any on-ball skill.
Hearing from many that this should not count as a three-block hoagie because bread is not continuous. Philly should have a city-run hoagie commission to investigate matters like these. Failure of government
BREAKING:
Fine Wine and Good Spirts says they will begin selling
@JHardenWines

DRINK UP, FRIENDS!
@Avi_WA
Good news, the buyers are bringing this in on a limited basis to start. Expect to see it in the eastern part of the state first and on our website. You'll be able to watch for it at this link > .
So basically, in two years, he spent the equivalent of 7 firsts and three seconds for a group of 7 players.
Of those 7, only Fultz was in an NBA rotation last year.
None are starters.

Also of note, MontCo says it will begin to release mail-in ballot results at 8:30 pm on election night.
MontCo voters requested 274k mail-in ballots...so far about 80% have been returned
Hot-take sports punditry is easy.
1. Pick a player/team
2. Be relentlessly negative toward said player/team
3. Set the bar at championship or bust.
4. Whenever the team/player does not win a championship, take a victory lap.
Repeat.
In normal circumstances this wouldn’t be a huge deal. Tobias was mostly average. But in 3 of his 6 playoff runs the Sixers were literally a half-quarter away from making the ECF (or closer). Even a slight upgrade on Tobi’s minutes could’ve been franchise changing.
For decades following his death, Baldi was remembered as a key figure in the local Italian-American community.
He's also the namesake of a middle school in Northeast Philadelphia.
But in the early 2000s, his legacy took an unexpected turn.
