My father-in-law is lineman. He is insanely gifted. Years ago we were together at the Pacific Intertie built in the 1960’s, and I asked him what it would cost to build interregional transmission today. I will never forget his answer… “We can’t, we don’t know how to do it.”

Transparency is a significant issue in the utility industry. Over-redaction of public information under the guise of security is anti-competitive. FERC needs to mandate a minimum transparency threshold. It can start by actually defining what is/is not CEII.

While the point is well taken and the IRA is obviously massively influential, I just want to quick plug how well the storage industry did pre-IRA. The grid storage industry was well on its way prior to the IRA and was inevitable, now being supercharged by the IRA.

Enjoyed listening to this pod with Pat Wood on (who I greatly respect). However, I would push back on his comments wrt to the “ordering” of decarb. He argues for decarb of the grid before addressing electrification but that misses the mark. We need to be doing both in parallel

Been seeing a lot of takes on this with the recent issues in ERCOT so I’ll just throw this out there: Transmission congestion and subsequent generator curtailment occur in markets outside of ERCOT, in both “connect and manage” and “connect and invest” systems.

ERCOT already has DC ties connecting it to other grids and is independent and non-FERC jurisdictional. This shouldn’t change with the expansion or addition of new DC ties. I’m not sure why some folks think it would.

My hot take as a developer is that queue withdrawal penalties are good! Increasing risk as the queue proceeds drives unviable projects out. If you have conviction in a project then put your money where your mouth is.

MISO obviously knew their queue reform proposal was going to be controversial, which is why they shoved it into a 45 minute presentation in the middle of the PAC and are limiting questions when they should have had more time or even a special meeting for something like this
