To memorialize legend Carl Kassel, .
@NPR
president Jarl Mohn relayed Carl’s wife’s wishes, that people might want to donate to their local NPR station. What a great way to remember a man who devoted his entire career to radio broadcasting.
I’m doing it.

When a person I know bragged about the recent crowds at Trump rallies, wondering where the Biden crowds are, I said: "They're rallying for Biden by standing in line for hours to vote."
Those lines of early voters in states like Georgia are
@JoeBiden
rallies.
RIP Barbara Walters.
I was a guest on The View; she sought me out beforehand and told me she'd been a friend of Ann Landers. "You're no Ann Landers," she volunteered, then proceeded to be so rude to me on set that my Mom called me after and said, "What just happened??!!"
My mother raised 4 good humans by herself, somehow kept us off welfare by working as a typist
@Cornell
, enrolled as a freshman when she was 48, got her MFA at 54, and then became a professor in the same department where she had been a typist.
Soooo
Last summer when I visited the American cemetery in Normandy, I asked on Twitter if anyone wanted me to visit a loved-one’s grave. I visited about a dozen that day, sent by strangers who wanted their servicemembers’ sacrifice remembered. It was an honor.
Friend to many, Special Olympics athlete
@TankSchottle
got his first vaccination today! Help him celebrate by giving him a follow and a virtual "high five!"
@MatthewACherry
Terry Crews received strength and support from many many strangers - women - (myself among them) when he bravely reported his sexual assault. He needs to remember what it feels like when people around you don’t believe you.
As President Biden opens the car door for his wife, It also occurs to me that it has been oh these long 4 years since we have witnessed a President being kind, courteous and loving toward his spouse.
Today is the anniversary of my mother’s death.
I think I’m starting to forget what she was actually like. I seem to be replacing her, in fragments, with my own version of what she was like.
Know this: I was so lucky to know her. Luckier still to have been raised by her.
My mother once had a cat “put to sleep” at the vets and brought it back to the house in a trash bag to bury it and it came alive in the car and started thrashing amd got out of the bag and lived for another couple of years.
The vet told my dad on the phone (??) that his dog had to be put down and he’d come to his house and do it. My dad dug the dog’s grave AND LET THE DOG WATCH. Then the vet came and checked the dog and said it was a false alarm. Oops! Dog’s fine! Everything about this is insane.
I just received a fairly abusive email from a reader. I responded politely. After a couple more back and forth -- him rude, me polite -- he announced that he was "posting screenshots of our conversation so people can see what Amy is really like!"
I was like: It's about time!
I was wearing a cotton dress I'd found at an antique store, and a green sweater from The Gap. I'd brushed my own hair that morning.
How I took her assessment of me was: "You're nobody."
And then she treated me that way.
Whoopi was generous, and I'll always be grateful.
My aunt (on the left) died today; her children separated from her by plexiglass because of the pandemic until the very end.
So I guess this is my private island that everyone is talking about today.
Today is the anniversary of my mother Jane's death.
With only a high school education, my dad left her (with four kids) on our failing dairy farm. She went to work as a typist - her first job outside the home.
15 years later she was a professor at
@Cornell
Good job, Mom
❤️
After years of an empty nest, we now have 3 young adults living with us, as they transition to the next thing in their lives.
1. They seem very large
2. They occupy all the chairs
3. I spend half my time hiding from them and the other half wondering where they are
@jk_rowling
I witnessed your generosity re signing books when my daughter waited in line for hours at
@PoliticsProse
in DC and you had to go to the Library of Congress(!) to speak, and the time ticked away but you WOULD NOT LEAVE until you had spoken to every kid and signed every book.
Today I stopped by my local waterfall to sigh (or cry), because I’ve just HAD it with people - and I ran into a neighbor who said he’d had a beautiful, amazing, life-changing epiphany, and he had stopped at the waterfall, too — to celebrate.
So OK life, well played.
To be clear, in my own (insignificant but lengthy) career in tv, radio, and print journalism I've worked for and alongside hugely talented and famous people and have watched how people behave in and out of the spotlight.
@BetteMidler
@Illeanarama
God Bless Bette. Watching this, I could sense all of the conflicted emotions that arise when a person is weighing disclosure.
The person I sold my house let me know she had found a “time capsule” no doubt buried by my ancestors - and she would like to have an “opening party.”
I replied - they are the ashes of my cat “Pumpkin” and if she wants to party and open it, have at it.
She said I could pick em up
College couple onboard plane.
He: I mean it’s just so ridiculous that you can’t tell a joke anymore without *offending* someone. You have to be so careful about who might hear you!
She: Or you could just not do it.
Me: if you break up with him right now I’ll give you a ride home
I am one who has never seen one frame of Game of Thrones.
We’re out there, hiding in plain sight, mystified by our social media feeds on Sunday nights.
Rando guy calls out to me on the street.
HE: Hey hey hey!
ME: [... a woman can’t just walk down the street thinking her thoughts without getting harassed...!]
HE: Can I ask where you got your jacket?
ME ...?
HE: Cause my mom would love it!
I’m getting catcalled in a Cathy cartoon
@ThomasAwful
Nora Ephron. Took me to dinner for no reason, gave me STERLING advice, which I followed, and then introduced me to her agent (who became my agent).
I was having a great Monday morning and then I saw a man pushing his elderly wife in a wheelchair and it’s the same Walgreens brand portable wheelchair I used with my mother, and so now I want to climb back under the covers.
Grief, when it hits, hits hard and out of nowhere.
I'm not loving this
#DontLookYourAgeChallenge
What's so awful about looking your age that we must now NOT do it?
(I realize I may be alone here, but this crap just makes me VERY tired)
Readers expressing alarm that I "express my point of view" in the "Ask AMY" column need to cast their eyes upward toward the top of the page, note the person's name and photo residing there, and understand that the entire column is devoted to personal stories and my responses.
I have been holed up in my (very private) workspace, doing some organizing ...
My hubby just popped by and found me wearing my old prom dress and smoking a cigar, so how’s your day going?
I’m in LA. Currently eating salad off of a piece of slate, while a perfectly good ACTUAL PLATE stands by.
Didn’t I leave the farm in order to NOT EAT OFF OF ROCKS
I decided to sleep in on this snowy and very cold day and then I remembered that I have to judge an apple pie contest in town so yes go ahead and feel sorry for me because I have to get dressed and EAT PIE
Mirroring what's happening everywhere else, my email inbox is flooded with hate mail today. Why? Because I've suggested that readers should follow CDC, state and local pandemic guidelines, wear a mask when around others, and take a vaccine when it's offered.
VERY CONTROVERSIAL
Sandeep Dhaliwal, the first Sikh to become deputy in Houston, TX was fatally shot from behind yesterday
He was a HERO!
With the help of his community, he filled an 18 wheeler truck with supplies worth over a million dollars for those affected by Hurricane Harvey
KNOW HIS NAME!
The first thing I did this morning was to check and see how Jimmy Carter was doing.
I'm not that big into prayer, maybe because I'm saving it up for the important stuff, but I feel immense gratitude for his life and I want him to be well.
14 year old girls are not “underage women.”
A 14 year old is not considered old enough to have full agency over her body. She cannot purchase Plan B or have an abortion without parental consent. Because in the eyes of the law (and society), she is a child.
Epstein is a pedophile
I see that my Twitter following has somehow reached 28K, and all without a blue check mark or me using the swears.
(THIS HAS NOT BEEN EASY)
Thank you all.
I just watched a doe and her two fawn cross my garden about 15 feet from me. But instead of running to grab my phone I just sat there as a silent witness, and it was beautiful, and you'll have to take my word for it.
I'm happy to report that through many challenges (and the blessings of good fortune), this guy and I still fulfill the promises we made on this day, 14 years ago.
Just saw I've hit 26K
@twitter
followers. And it happened the old fashioned way -- one person at a time, no bots, and no checkmark.
(Also no foul language, but now I'm just bragging....)
Thank you!!
Here’s a slice from my small town morning:
Local Sheriff set up a speed trap across from the church.
As I crossed the street, the officer pointed the radar gun in my direction, beckoned me toward his vehicle, and told me I was walking 3 miles an hour.
This morning at the feed store, the big burly bearded guy who always helps me out was crying, really hard, behind his mask.
I won’t say what it was about, but I will say that he and I talked and - if a man can’t cry out loud these days, of all times, then he isn’t a man.
On improvising with grace and humor,
But also ... something simpler about allowing your own humanity to shine through. Being IN a moment with someone, vs commenting upon it.
I’ve thought about it so often. I’ve been privileged to work with many fine journalists. She was special.
I have to bury a cat today. Not my cat, but a cat (possibly feral) hit by a car near my house.
The couple who hit the cat work in a bakery and a homeless shelter. They felt terrible and brought the cat to my house in a cupcake box. I'll give it a name and a nice resting spot.
This is a serious question. Forgive me if it has already been asked and answered elsewhere.
What compels a man to pull out his penis in the middle of the day and during a business meeting?
I mean it. WHY???
I just drove past one of the houses where I used to babysit when I was in high school.
Quick Q: why did the dads always drive me home?
It made me so uncomfortable.
Why didn’t the moms ever drive?
When Burt Reynolds was a very young actor, my mother wrote him a fan letter.
He wrote back a two page letter, delightful and witty, which was more of a fan letter than hers was, and it was adorable.
Insanely happy to be part of this week's live taping of

Thank you to the families who allowed me to visit their loved ones’ graves in Normandy today. I was honored to pay my respects to each of these men, on a beautiful and peaceful day. Finding these individual grave sites and photographing them was a privilege.
My crime against humanity so far today is in publishing this controversial remark regarding mask-wearing:
"This is a brief moment in our history. It seems selfish, as well as short-sighted, for people to refuse to take commonsense measures to protect themselves and others."
So when I asked my neighbor if there was anything I could do for her and she responded that I could clean out her litter boxes and mop the kitchen floor, I realized -- too late! -- that my offer was completely disingenuous.
New dog-person, here.
Asking others: do you leave media on for your dog to watch while you’re away?
Molly here seems to enjoy Pride and Prejudice (Joe Wright version), but is she just a peculiar Anglophile terrier?
Have I (already) gone round the bend?
