Disastrous day for the Corrigin community today and tonight. Many houses and sheds lost. Atm 2/3rds of my farm has burnt with a few sheds and machines. I along with plenty of others are in the same position after this horrible fire. Hardest day of my life.
The aftermath. Lost a truck, chaser bin, nurse tank. Mower, baler, header front, fuel trailer, 50 to 80 sheep burnt & lots & lots of trees. My phone has been going off the hook and there's work to be done so it's on silent. I will get contact with everyone once the chaos is over.
Harvest 2022 complete. Limped to the finish line but every wheat record we had got smashed.
Highest average yield.
Highest paddock yield.
Highest total tonnage.
Lowest protein 🤣
Will be one to remember and strive to beat in the upcoming years.
Never seen anything remotely like this before where I farm. Normally wheat in these soils dies at the flag leaf, yields 0.8t, all screenings and 15% protein. Amazing what rain can do 👌👌
Weedit purchase this summer has saved approx $40,000 in chemical this year with around 120mm since Nov 1st. Chemical fallows have had least 3 passes around 8% coverage and lately half the farm had a 16% pass. It's a nice feeling when 38ha of chemical lasts 500ha with higher rates
Canola harvest completed this morning.
-Largest canola planting ever.
-Most canola tonnes produced.
-Highest ever paddock yield.
-2nd highest average yield only due to significant hail damage on 30% of area
-Highest ever average oil
-318 rotor hours in 26 days.
-Now for cereals
Intentions: plant 150ha of wheat today
Outcome: Get bogged 1ha in on an old contour bank, Liquid tank shifted an inch and took out the sight tube, lost 5000l of maxamflo. Broke a tie rod on the front axle of the box. Bog holes fill up with maxamflo, spend 9hrs getting it out.
I find remote auto shut-off systems cost $1000s to install or have on newish chaser bins/fields bins This system costs $200 dollars from eBay with a car key remote. Installed on my old magnums to work on any old field bin and chaser as it is based in the tractor
#aghack
2022 is the gift that keeps on giving. Hail last night, lost 50% plus of 370ha of canola, and 400ha of barley to varying amounts. Photos below show a comparison of trident v lt4530p podguard canola in a hail situation.
It's nice using a new piece of farm equipment that did not have one mechanical failure, not even a bolt go loose, in its first season of operation. Seems to have come a rarity these days.
The best bits of canola have pushed past beer can measurement and now to landcruiser unit of measurement. But the biggest question is who will win out of the marshmallow and the canola?
The day I see engineers that design farm machinery, repair there own machinery on a hot day, around a hot engine, with no space to fit. So they can feel the pain of every farmer and mechanic as to go through. I will sleep happy at night
2021Harvest complete. Took 60 days but highest ever production and a few record yields made it worthwhile despite throwing up nearly every weather related challenge possible. Definitely one for the record books.
Calibre wheat on chemical fallow. Looking much happier than any wheat on canola stubble and consistently gaining 1.5t of yield compared to wheat on wheat. Been fortunate for the early season rainfall this year as has been minimal since then.
I'd nearly finished canola and on 1 end pass I upped the rate in the liquid tank. This is a white sandy loam with some non wetting issues
Left got 2.5l se14 @ 65l/ha,Right got 6.25l/ha se14 @ 150l/ha. Serious difference in germination and growth.
Harvest 2023👍
Reasonably happy with the result of around about average.
The only good records broken this year:
Highest protein average in probably over 25 years.(well before my time)
Most H1 wheat ever delivered.
100% Malt1 barley.
Having canola average 50% oil comes with a few disadvantages. Caked Draper belts, caked grain elevator, caked yield monitor. But all good problems to have 👌
I find it unimaginable that Western Australia can have serious water security issues when this amount of rain can fall. Let alone the agricultural potential to become as food bowl for Southeast Asia. Hope some day we start planning 20 plus years ahead.
I'm a believer in no livestock and zero till on heavy clays. Nice to see visual proof of water infiltration rates from last night's 15mm in 30minutes compared to the neighbours paddock.
Calibre Wheat comparison
On Brown Manure Lupins stubble. 3.1t/ha 13.2% protein H1 grade
On Canola stubble.
2.4t/ha 9.4% protein ASW9.
Same Fertiliser and N rates.
2yr gross, canola stubble up by approx $500/ha from an exceptional canola crop in 22. Might find a 2yr response.
Titan ax barley showing some impressive growth rates and coverage only a month after germination. Been fortunate here with may rainfall and warm sunny weather.
Vixen sown 16th May. Not messing around with the warm sunny and wet conditions this year. I only tweet the best bits so the grain forecasters still think we are on for a 25million ton crop in Western Australia.
Scepter 2.95t/ha
Calibre 3.35t/ha
Sown 15th May.
Quality to follow..
Needed the stripper rotor to be 150rpm higher to successfully strip heads off Calibre.
Last day of seeding into some good stripper stubble keeping moisture up near the surface after approx 20mm on this paddock 2.5 weeks ago. Been a very good year for disc seeding with these warm sunny days to cut through high stubble loads.
3rd year of the GRDC stubble height trial, rootboot razor left, dbs right. Zero difference in crop growth and population, proves that after 3 years of perfect seeding conditions, seeding bar type doesn't matter much. In marginal conditions are where differences will be found.
Earliest Calibre wheat crop sown 1/5. Amazing growth rates and biomass with lots of potential. 18 day spread over Calibre time of sowing makes for a large variation in crop growth this year, mid tillering to 3/4 leaf.
Slowly ticking along dry seeding. Moisture from earlier rain is too deep to chase. Potentially seems like majority of the program will be planted dry this year.
Calibre v Vixen trial
Sown 28th May
Vixen 3.06t/ha, 14.4% protein, 4.1% screenings H1
Calibre 2.84t/ha, 13.4% protein, 6.9% screenings, AUH2.
Bulky crop on chemical fallow that got pinched off at the end of the season. Pleasing result given this crop only had 120mm after sowing
43y92cl Canola going nuts on granddads old pig shed paddock. Practically unlimited nutrients for our environment. I would say it's only limit will be water.
This is service! Hutton and Northey out here until 8pm, the night before Easter long weekend to save my arse again from a 340 magnum that clearly doesn't like this year. Weekly hectare count will finally move above 0.
OP TT Canola trial.
Bidgee 1.15t/ha 39.9% oil
Bonito 1.02t/ha 42.2%
Bandit 1.10t/ha 40.4%
Yields approximately 400-500kgs down on Truflex hybrids this year. In short, what you pay for is what you get in 2023.
Disastrous day for the Corrigin community today and tonight. Many houses and sheds lost. Atm 2/3rds of my farm has burnt with a few sheds and machines. I along with plenty of others are in the same position after this horrible fire. Hardest day of my life.
This year started off in the worst way possible. Now we have all the potential in the world to end it in the best way possible. Had 100 to 115mm in the past 32 days so rain in moderation for another 2.5 months and frost's stay away and I'll be happy 😀
Old grazing system v New. Old pasture system in foreground is let whatever grow with a grass manipulation and/or spray. New System, sow Scope with an imazamox (raptor), graze after 4-8 weeks of growth,(sheep in feedlots) Mow scope at flowering. 3-4dse v 8-16dse + some hay value.
2 paddocks beside each other, 127ml GSR, 2 different varieties (Scope v Spartacus), 2 time of sowings(Late April v Mid May), 2 different rotations (fallow v fodder crop), with 2 very different outcomes in this challenging year.
Dbs v rootboot razor disc. Was meant to be a strip disc v draper Tyne trial but the Corrigin fires ruined that. Both seeded into moisture. First thoughts: Dbs brought up more moisture on the surface and softer seedbed, disc has firmer seedbed, no surface moisture.
When my crops don't get hammered by mice, or get horrible chemical damage or sown late from breakdowns. They actually go alright. Helps when this paddock was under water most of last year
UTC left, Overwatch right, 50% plant number loss and and severe stunting after a combination of a heavy 60mm opening rain, shallow seeding and some sandy soils. If this looks bad you should see the overlaps 😭
Mounted a fire fighter unit on the chaser for quick response to any fire near the harvester. Tank fits nicely under the chaser with the hypro pump and 3 way taps to fill the tank as well.
In 6 weeks we have gone from full soil moisture/borderline waterlogging to now if frost doesn't get the wheat, the lack of moisture will and the heat will top it right off to probably one of the driest finishes ever to a season after the wettest start since 1974.
Barley crop made a huge comeback after being white for a good 10 weeks from overwatch then jaguar application. I still don't recommend overlapping with it 😆

Considering a grass spray and harvesting this canola that's blown on the roadside. At $1220/t this is a can't miss opportunity for a few extra hectares 😛
Racked up a few hours in this girl the past 7 weeks, did 3/4 of the knockdowns, all of the Pre emergent sprays and half of seeding when the main tractor went on strike. Seeding sure put it through the hurt locker.
New Basf LR canola with Liberty, Truflex and podguard traits. Is some of the best looking/highest biomass canola I have ever grown. Liberty helping clean up ryegrass survivors from the early glyphosate spray in mice damaged areas.
Some early germinating Scope barley for sheep feed, with some medic and clover underneath. Will get a imazamox+mcpa spray very soon and sheep come out of the feedlots in 2 weeks. Shame sheep are worth 500 dollars in the Middle east and only 40 dollars in WA.
What a 6 day breakdown and 15mm of rain inbetween those 6 days then no rain for 6 weeks looks like in canola this year. Interesting to see the final result.
Dbs v rootboot razor year 2. Battalion xc canola. Not as much vigour difference as I expected. Mice loving the soft dbs soil though which is not what I expected
Anyone else find there earliest wheat crops tend to yield the highest? I seed wheat, year in year out from the 1st to 20th may and 75% of the time the 1st to 5th will have the highest yielding wheat.
35 days post sowing. The Barley growth on some soil types this year is unbelievable. 2 weeks germination difference looks like 2 months difference at the moment.
First time trialling terrador through the weedit. Very very impressed with the burn down on Afghan and squash melons. As well as activity on small ryegrass, radish, Afghan thistle and Roly poly. This is 3 days after application.
GRDC stubble height trial, comparing strip n disc, draper n disc and draper n Tyne treatments, In canola for the 2nd year, very minimal differences (30kg/ha) in the yield between treatments. Mostly due to perfect seeding conditions. Treatment yields around 1.4-1.5t/ha.
Liberty/Triazine Canola demo. Used 500ml select/500g atrazine/2l liberty early. Come back 3.5 weeks later with 3.75l to clean up due to 100mm plus of rain and poor spray conditions. System definitely has legs over TTs, spray timing/conditions is difficult to get right.
Mice selectively eating canola where standing stubble is. Learnt my lesson for not baiting at seeding time. Going to have plenty of ugly strips of no canola this year.
Rootboot Razr disc left v dbs right. 7was. Disc lost 25% of plants from silly seed with luximax and much more variable. Dbs had far superior vigour from 2was to 5was but has evened up now. Dbs was darker green for the first month from more mineralisation I suspect.
Is anybody else's Emu canola hanging onto flowers a lot better than every other canola varieties? Had many 30 degree days now and no other varieties flowers anywhere to be seen. Got 6 varieties in, all sown within 7 days.
Ugly potassium deficiency getting progressively worse on lighter soils post big canola crops in 2022. 10 units of K down the tube isn't enough anymore when N rates get pushed up.
I like to consider myself a top grower of roly polys. Can grow multiple crops in summer with subsoil moisture and minimal in crop rainfall. Kind of wish wheat and barley had this type of water use efficiency.
