Fantastic news that Australia has won the tobacco packaging ruling at the WTO. This is a major victory against the tobacco industry, who are doing their best to prevent plain packaging from being adopted around the world.
England is not an outlier on vaping: it’s a frontrunner.
A third of smokers incorrectly believe that vaping is as harmful as smoking, and a similar proportion has never tried it. These are the smokers who could be reassured by a medicinally licensed vape.
🆕Briefing to help local authorities respond to growing concerns about youth vaping in their communities.
This briefing is primarily for public health officials and trading standards officers, but also useful for councillors, schools, parents & retailers.
Smoking is riskier than vaping and not just for your lungs. E-cigs are the most popular & effective quitting aid and vapers should not be scared into switching back to smoking tobacco, which kills 100,000 people a year in the UK.
UK health experts have criticised a new WHO report which claims that vaping is harmful and risks hooking new generations on nicotine.

🆕News from ASH
From 1 October 2024, Hazel Cheeseman will take up the role of chief executive of ASH.
Hazel was appointed by the Trustees following an open and competitive recruitment process, in advance of the retirement of Deborah Arnott.
Deborah Arnott: “As we strive to achieve a smokefree nation by 2030 more needs to be done to support adult smokers who could benefit from switching to do so, while eliminating loopholes in the laws which could be used to promote products to teenagers.”
Raising the age of sale to 21 could reduce smoking by 30% among 18-20 year olds.
Tobacco is a unique product, addicting people in youth and killing them in middle age – it's time to consider bold measures.

If the Government is serious about making England smokefree by 2030, it needs to reduce youth uptake as well as help adult smokers quit. ASH strongly supports raising the age of sale, it’s worked well in the US and is popular with the public.
The price of tobacco products in Australia have just increased by 12.5%. This has pushed up the cost of cigarette packs to more than $40 AUD (over £22), research shows tax rises are one of the most effective ways to encourage quitting and prevent youth uptake.

Meta-analysis finds public smoking bans have not increased the exposure of children to secondhand smoke (SHS) at home. This counters the tobacco industry's 'displacement hypothesis' that smokefree laws could increase exposure to SHS in the home.
