fwiw as a non woman who could get pregnant, i still think it’s p important to name abortion as an issue of women’s liberation. like not exclusively so, of course, but the resistance to doing so actually just seems like weird false universalism.
hey
@SenSanders
if you introduce a resolution in the Senate blocking bomb sales to Israel by the end of the day tomorrow, in conjunction w the one being introduced by your friends in the House, it will go up for a vote!!! so you should absolutely do this. we're counting on you!
ok. im the editor & i use they/them pronouns. it’s fine, im trans masc, not a grave misgendering. but i have my pronouns in my email sig &, for the amt of time i spent dealing w this writer specifically on qs of trans representation, maybe it wouldn’t have killed her to check?
Ok. This is so annoying. I have had plenty of bad reviews. But I think that accusations should be accurate. I asked the editor to provide his fact checking and he wouldn’t and suggested that I go to the union. So I did. That is the story.
it’s v nice to be asked, as a grad student, to contribute to the anniversary issue of a prominent feminist academic journal. it’s not so nice when, as a grad student, you have to pull out bc writing a 12,500-word piece for free could not be made to fit into the freelance calendar
i never talk about this online bc it’s discouraged but being in a long running legal battle with the company whose driver hit you on your bike and fucked up your leg for the rest of your life is a fucking nightmare
should Jewish Currents start a product review vertical where every week we just investigate whether a decent conflict-free seltzer-making machine exists
happy may day, my neighbors and i have been on rent strike for a year today fighting for rent relief and repairs from the slumlords who own our beautiful building and im extremely proud of us!
welp, the JD Vance stans freaked out the Wash Post bad enough that they pulled a line suggesting he was worried about “declining white birthrates” & confirmed that he was rlly talking about “declining American birthrates,” a very not-white-nationalist thing to be worried about🏆
lol half the ppl in that article from yesterday r in a group thread trying to decide whether it’s worth it to divulge that the family of the guy who wrote it owns a castle
Wrote about an extremely intense eviction defense across the street from my house. I think this is a pretty good story about my neighborhood and NYC housing politics at the start of the Adams administration and hope you'll read it.
needless to say, there’s no contract abridgment or anything here, bc there’s no contract. no money. nothing changing hands except prestige, in the form of academic currency that i can’t spend outside the academy—which im already leaving.
i was supposed to have my book party tonight but it’s cancelled & everyone i love has covid so im pivoting to direct sales, if you’re in quarantine in central bk i will bring a copy to your doorstep with some tea
i defended my dissertation & then i went across the street to the Empire State Building and went up to the observation deck & took a picture of the tiny Grad Center below
the amazon news is so fucking cool. for as long as ive lived here ive seen ppl give up on this city by cynically declaring it already destroyed by capital beyond repair. that is a great way to justify abandoning something you didn’t want to fight for in the first place.
does everyone here who lives in New York know that if you’ve missed or withheld rent payments at any point since March 2020, you likely qualify to get your back rent covered by the state? the program is live as of yesterday morning.
sorry to be maudlin but well this is the deal: i didnt get that i couldve died when i got hit till hrs later in the ER, a nurse teared up & said, “we had another one in here yesterday—same thing as you but we lost her.” & it wasn’t this person either. it’s a public health crisis.
Vicky's review says SS's book makes transphobic moves, not that SS herself is "a transphobe." But I will say that the tone SS took w me, the trans editor of a review by a trans writer, when she called to complain abt it, made me feel like she didn't think we existed or mattered.
i had the honor of helping assemble these incredible remembrances, & their fittingly Berlantian mix of intimacy & knife's-edge analysis & comedy & ambivalence & love brought Lauren back into sharp focus for me & made me cry a lot
last night i dropped my phone in wet leaves it is fine now except the bottom left corner of the screen has lost its sense of touch and that is where punctuation comes from so do i get it fixed or do i submit to poetry
i got through the absurd thing i just had to do, but this is what ill say for now: it is extremely weird and dehumanizing to have your body become evidence
uhhhhhhh we just sent off a meticulous letter to our landlord that we've been working on for weeks, signed by about 60 percent of the occupied units in our large building, in response to *his* attempt to start negotiations with the 13 units still on strike, and he just wrote back
im in a zoom mtg w a lot of nonprofit ppl, we’re 40 minutes in, and it’s been like 90 percent icebreakers. is this normal? we’re supposed to be like organizing to defeat global fascism, this seems bad.
idk if im supposed to say this publicly yet, but i have a book of essays coming out & am trying to finish the introduction & can’t think of anything else to do to procrastinate besides telling you guys
last night a very wise friend explained to me that “obviously” the revolution will happen when sea levels rise to the point that “the internet gets wet,” i was immediately convinced & remain so
i loved Lauren, as a person as well as a thinker, in a way quite disproportionate to the small amt of time we actually spent together—a dynamic they were clearly familiar with, as a person who could read a room so well they could transform it w a gesture.
happy 35th bday to me, a gemini savant who has vaguely understood since girlhood that i would someday get to have a crisis of middle-aged masculinity during a major social upheaval that i'd wish i was a younger man for 😊
another remarkable thing in the AOC interview is how seamlessly she includes “defund the police” along w M4A & GND as a basic demand of the left & thus something Dems should pivot to for their own good
how did a pedophile w dreams of starting an insemination farm wind up near the center of the Jewish philanthropic world?
@nkulw
& I have some thoughts.
nice childhood memories brought back of being told jews were uniquely smart bc of our tradition of “asking questions,” while simultaneously being punished for asking questions
ok you know how good therapists are basically rabbis but we're not supposed to talk about it? want to know how this came to be historically and what it might look like if mental healthcare took a different path? read this, by
@malefragility
, i'm obsessed.
im delighted to be featured in a piece abt everyday life in socialist brooklyn. im less delighted to have been quoted out of context at one point, and to have had an unsettling experience with the reporter, as did some of my friends.
it’s great that after umpteen decades of feminist and queer critique the universally agreed upon solution to the problem of marriage turned out to be saying “my wife” in a borat voice
i think this is one of the most important pieces the magazine i work for has published, bc
@kaleemhawa
lays out so clearly what is unsayable abt Palestine in US media: the Israeli colonial project isn't just a complicated tragedy, it has to end, & it can
i feel as though i have been unduly under-congratulated for my executive decision, as culture editor of jewish currents, to completely ignore the borat movie
We are thrilled to announce the ratification of our first contract, with substantial wins that honor our history as a leftist Jewish magazine and, we hope, contribute to setting high standards for labor policies across the media industry.
i love early spring bc it's the time it feels most appropriate to have the stream of consciousness of a blessed simpleton, ie in the past two days my thoughts while walking down Fulton have included "a whole store for hats!" & "they grow so many kinds of fruit all over the world"
this is so damning. im wondering now if the obsessive critique of “consumerism” starting in the 90s wasn’t just missing the point but was always at least implicitly racist, a la scolding about conspicuous consumption in rap videos
there’s this dude who thinks JC won’t accept his pitches bc he’s an antizionist rather than bc the pitches are bad (he seems not to read our magazine), he has been writing us increasingly harass-y emails, & i am dyying to write back & correct the RENT quote in his email signature
