microservices arent for scale, they're for humans. people don't like to share their pet gardens, follow other people's conventions, work on someone else's code, use a language they don't like. microservices allow everyone to have greenfield work all the time.

Counterpoint: Java (Scala) microservices weโ€™re an absolute nightmare for us at Twitter as we migrated off Ruby on Rails. Much of the complexity that Elon mentioned after he bought the company was from this architecture.

@levelsio to me this (neural networks) is really so amazing in its simplicity and beauty 1) neural networks are graph of "neurons", some off the shelf simple function representing a neuron charging up and activating. 2) graphs in general can be modeled many ways. edge-list,

Autodesk really shot themselves in the foot by neutering hobby access to Fusion 360. taking a look at FreeCAD and damn it's good! gonna go spend my $ on sponsoring it every month instead of a Fusion 360 subscription

@cpojer smart locks: don't need to carry keys anymore. smart outlet: turn on bathroom space heater only when overnight forecast is too cold etc. plenty of time saving, space saving, energy saving stuff.

when i picked up Go, i read all the docs and all of the standard library. front to back. it served me incredibly well for the last 10y and it took me only a few hours

One of the easiest ways to gain a relative advantage in your field is to read the docs. Not just reference them, read them straight through. This gives you a massive edge because no one ever does it! Same goes for technical books, they'll give you superpowers.

A very good friend passed away. I wish I could see her. She never got to meet my daughter. We haven't got to hangout in a while. I've never lost someone so close and I don't know how to handle it. I love you.

@bethanyjbabcock when my mom was dating a while ago, she complained of low quality men in their 50s. i told her to go do activities with a barrier to entry (e.g sailing) so she'd naturally meet folks who were prefiltered to at least not be boring slobs. it worked for her!

@levelsio i mean (1) recording the custom officer which pisses him off (2) turns out there's drugs in your luggages (3) not supposed to have drugs (4) make a big deal about the pilot having to convey the news (5) trash the pilot publicly. this isn't what reasonable people do.

@tobi I like the Singapore/Lee Kuan Yew approach of paying politicians competitive executive salaries, so that... it attracts competitive executive types. Helps avoid corruption as well. Unfortunately that's not what we're getting in Canada.

In my experience, people are a lot more unhappy in tech than they were in the army, or when I was a security guard, pumping fuel at a gas station or working at McDonalds. I never understood why. Maybe unmet high expectations? #tech #job #happiness #psychology #sociology

i'm in one of these phases where i need to catch-up on a lot of tech and spend 16h/d: tracing code, reading reference docs from A to Z, meeting and asking people to walk me through everything. it's good long term, but is frustrating in inability to ship and win. mixed feelings

@neuroecology i drove by it the other day and my mind was blown. shipbuilding areas (Samsung Heavy Industries, Daewoo Shipbuilding) in Geoje also have a sci-fi vibe to them. think huge gantries spanning many street blocks, looking like they could pick up an entire neighbourhood in 1 swoop.
