Just saw OPPENHEIMER, an in-depth character exploration of the people who built the atomic bomb, a weapon of mass destruction that killed a quarter million Japanese civilians. Film is 3 hours long and features zero Japanese people.
Anti-Asian racism isnโt un-Americanโitโs quintessentially American. You canโt kill millions of Asians across the Pacific for a whole ass century in the name of America and then out of nowhere say that anti-Asian racism is un-American. Thatโs just lying.
this makes me so angry. millions of hours of people cultivating connection and community and one man-childโs whims just destroyed it because of a mood swing he felt while vacationing on an island (that btw no individual person should own)
"I don't know why I did it. "
"The judge basically said I have to buy Twitter or else, and now Iโm like, okay.โ
Elon made the decision to buy the company outright while he was in a โmanic moodโ pulling an all-nighter on a visit to Larry Ellisonโs Hawaiian island.
Last week, i had my students respond anonymously to the prompt "Things You Wish Your Professors Knew."
With their permission, paraphrasing the responses:
A 21-year-old white guy targeted, shot, and killed multiple Asian women in Atlanta.
Never forget that lots of 21-year-old white guys did the same thing across the Pacific.
I am not stupid. I understand the film & its takeaways. Panning into the world of science + (geo)politics & its (lack of) ethics was fascinating. It was brilliantly acted. Just couldnโt get over the erasure of the human beings most affected by the main focus of the film.
a gentle reminder now that youโre seeing people you havenโt seen in a year:
DONโT YOU FUCKING DARE COMMENT ON ANYBODYโS WEIGHT WHEN YOU SEE THEM.
I canโt believe people are actually doing this.

Hereโs mine: I write so Filipino kids have the opportunity to read about themselves.
In academia, this has 0 value. In my life, this means everything.
Be sure to add โHold on to your visionโ to your to-do list today.

to be clear the Philippines is not some racial utopia but itโs worth examining why the reception of films with Black leads donโt tank like they do in other parts of Asia.
the 2 types of professors:
A: my parents are professors.
B: in college, when i was lost and felt like dropping out, there was this one professor who, despite my lack of confidence, must've caught a glimpse of something i couldn't yet see, and went above and beyond to mentor me.
The University of Chicagoโwhose endowment is $8.5 billionโwonโt be paying their resident assistants (RAs) their spring quarter salaries.
The quarterly salary of an RA is $3,404.
Resident assistantsโolder students who work in dorms and are guaranteed housingโhave realized, by sharing updates through informal group chats, that they will not be paid for spring quarter.

so weโre walking on the beach, and suddenly a woman says to my friend and me, โso sorry for the mistake.โ and weโre like huh? โsorry for mistaking you for the waiter.โ
friends, this yt woman was apologizing to the WRONG BROWN PEOPLE. We werenโt the ones she mistook for waiters.
History:
Over 140,000 Japanese were killed when an atomic bomb hit Hiroshima during World War II.
Hollywood:
Letโs make a movie that centers the white woman who interviewed a Hiroshima bombing survivor.
USC was worried that a two minute speech was going to ruin commencement but clearly they are capable of ruining commencementโand reputationโall on their own.

i canโt even begin to find words for the attack on a 65-year-old filipina woman in New York. and the bystanders who did nothing.

Filipino American household income is a bad socioeconomic indicator because that figure isn't supporting one household, it's supporting SEVERAL households in SEVERAL countries.
reasons to apply to things even if you know youโre gonna get rejected. you:
practice your voice
gain clarity on your work
build thick skin
have a working draft for future apps
get folks knowing about your work (some may present opps later!)
&
YOU MIGHT *NOT* GET REJECTED!
Thousands of white people riot and destroy property, no consequences. One Black child calls for help, and she is killed by police. Same exact city.

Despite university, state, local and federal COVID-19 guidelines, about a thousand Ohio State students flocked to Chittenden Avenue Saturday for an evening that resulted in several flipped cars and Columbus Police helicopters being called in โ but police made no arrests.
I wish they had Yelp for PhD programs except instead of rating how prestigious they were we rated them on how well they cultivated the potential of first generation college students of color.
this shouldnโt need to be said but here we are: marrying a latinx person and adopting their surname does not mean you can cosplay as a latinx scholar.
pop quiz: if youโre invited to speak at a college, which one will offer you the best speaking fee?
a) community college
b) harvard
c) another ivy league
A: community college. in fact, the speaking fee offered by *one* community college will be more than *all 8* ivies combined.
I am 1 of 2 Filipino Americans to have ever graduated with a PhD from the UCLA Dept of Sociology. The department has never had a professor of Filipino descent.
Btw, LA is home to the largest Filipino population in the world outside of the Philippines.
#Academia
starting a new professional association for academics who as children wanted to sing in broadway musicals but weren't allowed/able to so they ended up in academia instead
In the Philippines, the names of kids are often portmanteaus of their parentsโ names.
For example, the daughter of Maria and Delfin would be โMaridel.โ Homil and Vinaโs son would be named โHovin.โ
What would be your name if it was a portmanteau of your parentsโ/guardiansโ?
Remember that when you hire these race scholars for fall, their job is to do research and teach, not fix racism in your department, university, or community.
reminder: a filipino accent is as beautiful as a british or french accent. if your brain is telling you otherwise, thatโs the colonialism and white supremacy talking; b/c in truth, the filipino accent is courage, an assertion of oneโs voice *in spite of* the racism silencing it.
can we acknowledge how messed up it is that the most common non-english language behind spanish in californiaโ

I got a new job (kinda)! Starting fall, I'll be the new Faculty Director for the CSU Chancellor's Doctoral Incentive Program, a pipeline program recruiting underrepresented PhD students to become faculty in the nation's largest public university system. ๐
any member of these southeast asian american groups couldโve told you this in the 90s but glad itโs getting national coverage 30 years later i guess
Hmong, Vietnamese, Filipino, Laotian and Cambodian Americans all fall under the broad category of Asian, but their experiences when it comes to things like education levels can vary greatly from other Asian groups such as Chinese, Korean and Japanese.
Iโve been watching medical shows my whole life, and never once have I seen a Filipino nurse. Itโs time that changes.
Hereโs my latest piece in

on why the absence of Filipino nurses on medical TV shows isnโt just unacceptable, itโs offensive.
24 hours ago, a 70 year old Mexican woman who โlooks Asianโ is beaten up on the bus in Eagle Rock, my hometown. No one intervened. 7 hours ago, a 19 year old man was arrested for killing a 38 year old Asian woman and her 8 year old daughter in Rancho Cucamonga, Joeโs hometown.
