Hello Everyone,
I've created a one-stop destination to understand some facts of the 2024 General Elections in Kerala.
It includes a detailed political profile, brief on major issues, demographics and electoral statistics (and maps!)
P.C. George says that the only way to prevent terrorism is for India to become a Hindu Nation. He says that some in Kerala wishes to make India a Muslim nation by 2030 but this was prevented by Demonetization.
His remarks have obviously sparked a huge controversy in Kerala.
That the anti-Hindu film The Great Indian Kitchen with its grotesque characterisation of Swamis and the Sabarimala Verdict won the Kerala Film awards is an indication of the actual ideological inclination of new-age communists under Pinarayi.
Supreme Court slams Nupur Sharma and says she should apologise to the whole country. Supreme Court says she and her loose tongue has set the entire country on fire. Supreme Court says her outburst is responsible for the unfortunate incident at Udaipur, where a tailor was murdered
A day ago, she was lauding the cancellation of a book that had been already accepted for publication, Now she is speaking out about how her FoE had consequences and how "we as a society do not respect FoE".
Hypocrisy extraordinaire.
"Every single time you go to a pure vegetarian restaurant and eat a Masala Dosa, the Constitution takes [one] step backward."
No, this isn't from faking news or The Fauxy, it's the views of a former primetime host of a major Malayalam News Channel and Academic in Kerala.
This language and a lot of ther language that gets thrown around in twitter and elsewhere - boomer, millennial etc. Make no sense to me. Just downstream of American culture.
Two people arrested for ritual sacrifice of Chicken in Sree Kurumba Temple, Kodungallor by Kerala Police.
FYI, a 1968 state legislation in Kerala bans Animal Sacrifice in and around ONLY hindu temples.
ISRO's wind tunnel equipment blocked by trade unionsists wanting a "Nokkukooli" of ₹10 lakh.
While the equipment entered the VSSC compound under police protection, the issue has not been resolved.
Out: KK Shailaja, Most popular CPM leader after Pinarayi.
In: Mohammed Riyas, DYFI President and incidentally the Chief Minister's Son in Law.
Pinrayi-fication complete.
An ex-president has been deplatfromed in the United States in a coordinated action by multiple Tech Giants and cheered on by one side. So please go preach your polemics about democracy and free speech etc elsewhere.
@TVMohandasPai
Difference between the US and India is this: In the US, nobody faces abuse for speaking the truth. Journalists have documented the tragedy in detail without being attacked by crazy jingoists incapable of seeing human suffering because they’re too obsessed with “national image.”
Why are Supreme Court Judges commenting on random matters that are in the public domain? Such random comments on issues in the public domain do not bode well. They should excercise restrain which is necessary for their role and dignity in office.
Old Pension Scheme is the most dangerous policy proposal that has picked up traction. Very bad sign that Himachal is voting for Congress based on it, among other factors.
This is a very valid point by

This is why we need educated leaders !!!
The most enduring image from the past few days: IG Sreejith, the man who led a squadron of policemen protecting two women to the Nadapanthal, in tears in front of Swami Ayyapa, today morning.
Justice (Rtd.) Indu Malhotra has darshan of Swami Ayyapa at Sabarimala.
She was the sole dissenter who upheld the rights of the believers in the Sabarimala Entry Judgement.
Swamiye Sharanamayyappa!
സ്വാമിയേ ശരണമയ്യപ്പാ!
Yet to read the judgement, but this to me signals a worriesome precdent. An action to sever devotion to individual deities themeslsves than the broader religion.
@yashar
It isn't contentious in India. You can continue to stoke tension to your misinformed audience, but lakhs of have visited Bhagavan at Ayodhya, and crores will.
A vow Gandhi asked his compatriots to take in 1919: "With God as witness we Hindus & Muslims declare that we shall behave towards one another as children of the same parents, that we shall have no differences, that the sorrows of each will be the sorrows of the other ..." (1/2)
Kerala's TPR has been consistently above 20% for more than a month, gets coverage from the New York Times as "The State charting its own course while the Central Government stumbles".
The sort of positive coverage even Malayalam Media haven't done in past few weeks from them.
ET Mohammed Basheer, Ponnani MP of the Indian Union Muslim League. A party based solely on advancing the interests of Muslims in Kerala, speaking about the importance of the "Secular" Constitution.
Sanatan Dharma is a Sanskrit term that can be loosely translated as “eternal religion”. Since the 19th Century, it has been used to evoke a certain homogeneity in Hinduism.
Even *IF* Nupur Sharma has committed an offence that is plain as daylight, the Supreme Court has no business making statements against her.
The petition asked for all the FIRs registered against her to be clubbed - a reasonable and fair request, for even the most heinous crime.
The one time the Judiciary was actually supposed to keep the executive and legislature in check, it failed.
Please spare us the meglomaniac justifications for usurping, subverting and undermining the power of the elected legislature and executive.
Kerala's financial situation is so dire that the Government of Kerala implemented all of the reforms that was proposed by GOI to avail the increased borrowing limit without much of a fuss.
Census is an item in the Central list of the Seventh Schedule. The legislation that governs census in the country is a central legislation called the Census Act, 1948.
Yet a state was allowed to conduct what it called a census.
The Supreme Court found nothing amiss.
Neither
Sabarimala doesn't need your Social Justice. The temple had the greatest amount of involvement from all communities, and is a symbol of the unity of Hindus of Kerala. My last comment for now on the topic.
Anju Bobby George has seen first hand how dirty politics over sports can get.
She was pushed out of position as President of Kerala Sports Council by then Minister EP Jayarajan. He accused her of working for the opposition and insulted her. She resigned and is now the VP of AFI
Three days of relaxation were announced (18,19,20), two days already passed (18,19) tomorrow there will be hearings and maybe a decision (20) and by that time this entire debate will be irrelevant. 😂😂😂
JUST IN: Supreme Court does not pass any order to stop Kerala's lockdown relaxations for

shopping for now. Pinarayi Govt gets what it wants. Next hearing tomorrow morning.
Narendra Modi's TIME 100 profile says he has "eroded the rights of the Muslim Minorities" and "intimidated and imprisoned Journalists" and more.
Mamara Banerjee's meanwhile (written by Barkha Dutt), has not a single word about the hounding of BJP supporters post-election.
One of cricket’s greatest socio-political stands. Imagine if Don Bradman said ‘Apartheid is South Africa’s internal matter. Let them resolve it amicably & peacefully. We can be spectators but not participants’. Just imagine.
In normal Democratic Republics, you approach the court to protect your free speech rights.
In India, you approach the Courts to prevent other people's free speech.
BREAKING: Mumbai Lawyer moves
#SupremeCourt
against
#KanganaRanaut
seeking preventive measures against her for her alleged statements about the Sikh Community. Lawyer says she has hurt his sentiments & the faith he was born into. Lawyer says her social media must be regulated.
Rebecca John: Before case begins, would like to point out that sections of the reporting be taken down. I don’t know who these people are. A media house named “Lawbeat” has put up whatsapp messages. This is absolutely contemptuous.

A bit tired of this "breast tax=tax on upper garments" claim. First image is Cochin rani less than 100 years ago; second is a Brahmin family. People were topless in Kerala, across castes.
If this was a pre-2014 or pre-2016 election in Kerala, Congress/UDF would have won handily. The growth of the BJP in the State has cast Congress to its death.
The loss of Nair votes and now Syrian Christian votes is a one-two punch it cannot tolerate in the State.
An educated comparision of what Telengana, Karnataka or Tamil Nadu is doing to attract investment versus what Kerala is doing would reveal how little effort Kerala is taking. It's almost embarassing.
The Wire story being debunked is not particularly shocking to me. They've published stories that fundamentally misunderstood profit and loss for companies; or posited that BJP's advantage on social media is due to "Tek Fog" and so much more.
For some context: P.C. George is heading a one-man party in Kerala's Kottayam District. He is taking on all three fronts in his home constituency of Poonjar and is most likely to win.
People calling the new Unified Pension Scheme (UPS) as OPS or OPS-Lite have no clue about what the scheme is.
First off, this is still based on Employee contribution + Govt Contribution, in contrast to OPS that is undefined and unfunded.
Second, variation is Assured pay +
One of the bravehearts that died yesterday in the encounter in Jammu and Kashmir is 24-year old Vaisakh from Kollam, Kerala.
He had recently finished the construction of a new house, and had only two months left to serve in J&K.
May we never forget his sacrifice. Jai Hind!
I'm most fascinated by people tweeting as if this sort of hate is new, something sparked by recent events or events post-2014.
Heard of T.J. Joseph?

The arguments by some on the Sengol or the Sceptre as a monarchical symbol & therefore ought to be rejected, is absolute nonsense.
The Sengol was created and handed over not to a Monarch, but a Prime Minister that represented the democratic aspirations of the Indian People. (1/)
The Normalisation of the Mopilah Riot of 1921 has reached new heights with a film being made to portray the rampage in the then Malabar district as the part of the Independence Struggle. It was not. It was a "blood curling atrocity" committed by Mopilahs on Hindus of Malabar.

’s son was kidnapped, ostensibly, by government officials and an extortion call was made to release him. A serious crime has been committed. This is what our agencies are doing.
This attempt to subsume Kerala's social reforms under the name of Periyar needs to be wholly rejected.
The success of the social reform movement in Kerala is due to the efforts of Chattambi Swamikal, Sree Narayana Guru, Mannathu Padmanabhan, Ayyankali and so on.
every field.
5. If Kerala is progressive today, its due to the efforts of Periyar and other anti-caste activists who tore apart the brahminical rules keeping dalits and avarnas out of streets, temples and such like.
6. Apart from this historically brahmins reached south india
This is due to the increasing polarization in Kerala between the Muslim and Christian community such as the discriminatory budgeting of minority welfare funds, perceived increase in influence of the Muslim League, "Halal" issue, and obviously Love Jihad, Hagia Sophia issues.
Shah is talking about Savarkar's book "The Indian War of Independence" which framed the 1857 rebellion as a nationalistic, united uprising against the British.
But yes, Sanghis don't get it.
Savarkar was born in 1883. When he was thirty years old he did time travel, went back to 1857, did some magic and slipped back again.
Librandus just won’t get it
One of the most consistent themes I've noticed online is how much India and its concerns are dismissed out of hand by Europeans and Americans. Our issues and problems are just not worth it for them.
Even casually indulging yourself in American discourse is quite disorienting. At least most of our people have some sense/ a vague notion of reality.
It is insane to hear the things being discussed in US. Its cultural influence on India should be resisted at all costs.
This is most likely misinformation,
@smitaprakash
Ma'am. The girl claims in the Lokmat report that she is being paid by NASA to review research proposals!
Abdulakutty, two time former Kannur MP of the CPM and two time former INC MLA from Kannur is now with the BJP. He got kicked out of the CPM in 2009 for praising Modi. He got kicked out of INC in 2019 for praising Modi.
A year ago, the Supreme Court delivered a 4-1 verdict in favour of entry of women between the ages of 10-50 into the Sabarimala Temple. It is a black day for Hindus, and the consequences have been immense.
In this opinion piece, I trace out some -
"Whatever that is yours - it is not yours. Whatever you take pride in, there is nothing to be proud of. Whatever you do, you harm.
We seek in all, an elimination of your identity, your beliefs, and your culture. And we will shame you into doing so yourself."

While in the last assembly election he pandered to the Muslim community in his constituency, due to changed dynamics and his own isolation within Kerala Politics, he has taken an anti-Muslim stance akin to, or more than that of BJP in the State.
He is famous in Kerala politics for running his mouth, stoking controversy and being a "one-man army".
He has likely sensed the nature of the future of Kerala politics. This is the context of his comments.
Justice Gautam Patel's politics, or Justice DYC's politics, is more than acceptable. But J. Abdul Nazeer's statements are the indication of an "unfortunate ideological shift". LOL
This is a terrific piece ripping apart the incoherent and disconcerting speech of Justice Abdul Nazeer. Thank you, Mr. Kaleeswaram Raj, for writing this.
This has led George to moot a sort of social coalition of Hindus and Christians in order to polarize them against the Muslim community (who are present in substantial amounts in his constituency) as his primary plank.
This to a lighter extent has been used by the Left as well.
Lest we forget: two years since the Sabarimala Judgement; when the Supreme Court denied the right to religious freedom and practices to Hindus.
The consequences of that decision are being felt at every level of Hindu society in Kerala. There is no looking back. Swami Sharanam!

to reconsider new policy on vaccine distribution so that availability is assured & no additional financial burden is incurred, enabling States to perform constitutional obligation in health sector.

Article 18 prevents the official recognition of titles. Does not prevent individuals calling the son or grandson of a former Maharaja as a Maharaja. It's their right to do so, you cannot compel anyone to address anyone else a certain way.
@myraemacdonald
Yes. The dominant Indian view is that there’s no fake certificate problem, and the dominant Pakistani view seems to be that there’s no real security threat. Would love to see some even-handed reporting, though I’m largely sympathetic to both the Indian and Pakistani positions.
Four Entire pages of Indian Express covers all the cases registered against BJP Kerala President K. Surendran.
Most of them are cases registered during the 2018-19 Sabarimala protests.
Moitra admits she gave login, password to Hiranandani, denies taking cash - An MP basically used her office directly for the benefit of an industrialist, yet there is no grand riposte on the grave ethical and moral issue the MP's conduct raises.
