On Monday, I re-introduced legislation to make the City responsible for repairing & maintaining sidewalks. Currently, an adjacent property owner is responsible. While rarely enforced on residents, it's time for the City to take full care of this public space, esp. in n'hoods.

Hear, hear! Cities are where some much work gets done because there's no other option. Less partisan, more nimble, responsible to people, and focused on solutions. @PeteButtigieg 's political worldview is shaped by this and it's a perspective needed in our Presidency.

A point of personal celebration w/ a dose of politics. Last week, we added a daughter to our family. She's perfect. Yet, the imperfect reality is that out of 193 countries in the UN, ONLY the US, New Guinea, Suriname, & some S. Pac. islands don't mandate paid parental leave.

This is false. The dollars aren’t missing. The debate is how to spend the dollars set aside for transit expansion along Campbellton Rd. And, to suggest that the tragic death of Jeff Parker is connected to a debate on transit priorities is sick & should be roundly shouted down.

Today, City Council's Zoning Cmte chose exclusion over inclusion. Rather than "hold" legislation to eliminate parking min. & allow attached ADUs, they moved, over my objection to "file" - killing the current bill. There was no discussion on the merits or our housing shortage.

....targeted 52 Iranian sites (representing the 52 American hostages taken by Iran many years ago), some at a very high level & important to Iran & the Iranian culture, and those targets, and Iran itself, WILL BE HIT VERY FAST AND VERY HARD. The USA wants no more threats!

Last night, the @CobbDemocrats honored my late mother with their Lifetime Achievement Award. It was bittersweet for my father and I to accept the award in her absence. She would have been so proud of this honor and even more so of all the women candidates in the room.

This is my neighbor's house. Mr. & Mrs. Walton have been waiting for sidewalk repair since the 1990s. This month - using D2 Renew Bond funds - we are able to to fix a bunch of sidewalks on under-invested streets. The need is more than the available funds but...progress.

For 42 years (!) my dad has taught at @1881MorrisBrown I spent my childhood running around campus. The college has been part of all my life…& put me through college. Thrilled that accreditation has returned to this special place. A long time & a lot of effort to get here.

Scenes from today. To all those marching & speaking up, you are making our city and country better. As Bernice King implored, “Don’t stop.” Justice and equity are within reach. #JusticeForGeorgeFloyd #BlackLivesMatter

Exciting movement on this property across from City Hall. Buried in the lede: no new parking which is central to the affordability of these units. Plenty of accessible parking nearby + MARTA.

The developers tapped to build out 1.3 acres across from Atlanta City Hall have promised 186 affordable housing units there, Mayor @KeishaBottoms announced today. That's more than the RFP called for! For @AtlCivicCircle :

From Cape Town to Karachi, Beijing to Buenos Aires, the world is as perplexed as we are why our Governor is suing the Mayor and Council over recommending that people wear masks in public. Do the smart, courteous thing and wear a mask in public, please. 😷

At today’s Council meeting, I introduced legislation along with 10 Council colleagues to ban the use of single-use plastics at City-owned facilities - including the airport. I look forward to working with stakeholders to take this important step toward a more sustainable city.

Thank you to my @atlcouncil colleagues for unanimously passing a resolution urging @ATLDOT to repurpose streets/ lanes for pedestrian/bicycle use as traffic has ⬇️ & walking/biking has ⬆️. This is a unique moment to rethink how we prioritize street space, even if temporarily.

11 years ago, as an @atlantabike Board member, I remember helping set up for the city's 1st Streets Alive! It's been a huge success. Yesterday, w/ CMs Westmoreland, Dickens, Bond, Ide, and Archibong, we introduced legislation to make Streets Alive! every Sunday on P'tree St.

This little guy came to today’s City Council meeting. He’s in 3rd grade but doing 5th grade math and he wants to be an NFL cornerback. But the coolest thing about him is that his name is Amir. Dream big, namesake!

Small stuff makes a big difference in how we experience a city. I’m excited to introduce this sign, designed by downtown’s ⁦ @KEYLAYDesign ⁩ and funded by my office, that will replace the poorly designed one you see above it. Parking lots in the city must have it by April 1

10 years ago, I was on a panel with Spike Lee. Beforehand, during this photo, he told me that Atlanta was the worst sports town. I said, "No, Miami is" and "The @ATLHawks win a title before the Knicks." He scoffed. Not quite there but tonight was some long awaited satisfaction.

As we talk about changes to the zoning code, we must acknowledge that more people want to live in Atlanta than there is housing. That requires new approaches. If we close the door behind us, and don't let new residents in, we lose. A piece I wrote for @SaportaReport :

Zoning for more density, even minimal density, is often an emotional issue for existing homeowners. This has proven true in n'hoods & councils across the country...for decades. But it is the only way to, at the needed scale, allow a big city to grow equitably & sustainably.

The most important thing about this amazing Paris transformation is how fast it happened — how fast people on bikes “appeared” — once streets were transformed. You can’t write this off as “Paris was always this way,” because it wasn’t. It took leadership.

It’s been tough to see our parks & Beltline teeming with people again this weekend. We are not staying far enough apart from one another. This is a time when govt must step in, even further than we have, to change behaviors in order to protect the greater good.
