I hate to be that person, but in the midst of this whole Offset word vomit, I'm coming here to recommend a book to you. People talking about how it's impossible for a man to trap a woman with pregnancy should read “A Good Name” by Yejide Kilanko. You'll probably be shocked.

I saw that tweet and I was actually so upset. Things Fall Apart is deeply rooted in Igbo culture and it employs the language and traditional sayings to show it. Then we get the movie and instead of Igbo attire, it's leather and fur with that Wakanda accent. Ey Jehovah.

She is so real for this. I have read all of Chinua Achebe's books, all of Cyprian Ekwensi's books but I have never gone up to half of any of Wole Soyinka's. It is unnecessarily verbose with complex tenses and words that are oftentimes without any emotive theme.

First off, I'll start with the elephant in the room. Their age gap. Isn't it ironic that no mention of their ages were made in the whole book? I had to resort to calculating her age when I got to this page and I was stunned. Fa’iza was probably a little over 18 when they met.

Let's assume he indeed got into uni at age 16, (which I doubt) finished at 20, started his Masters immediately after at 21. He would have been 23 when he met Fa’iza. 23-18= 5 years. There is at least a 5-year gap between them. (See as one book dey make person do Mathematics😭)

Next, his relationship history. Fa’iza had every right to be worried about it. Not just for religious reasons, but to know him better. Him constantly trying to hide it till Fa’iza snooped is a red flag, which led to Fa’iza having a complex. Not an excuse to read the mail tho.

Now the issues began, they couldn't get married Islamically, which is a big part of Fa’iza’s belief. The poor girl was broken because she agreed to get married to him without her parents knowledge, which began years of her heartache and worry.

The kind of things I've learned about some Nigerian women post-Broken review on X and TikTok is really disappointing🤧 According to them, for me to speak up about Ahmad means I'm trying so hard to be different, I have never been in love and I can’t have a man. Exhibit A⬇️

I also have other criticisms, but being a Nigerian Romance book which is a growing genre in our country, I let it go. But the whole Ahmed thing was too much for me to leave. Funny thing, I read Little Rot immediately after Broken and I loved it! I can't wait to review it😭

A lot of other criticisms about the book. I don't usually say criticisms directly but I just wasn't comfortable with some things there. So I avoided reviewing it altogether. Unrelated but Little Rot by Akwaeke Emezi also gave me that "too uncomfortable to review" feeling.

Classism is everywhere, even with education. But the same Social Sciences courses explain how the economy, government, society, mind, etc work, while Arts courses entertain you, amongst other things. Maybe if you studied Social Sciences or Arts, your brain for pick🙃

There was one time I suddenly realized I was the only girl in the keke I was in. I immediately stopped the music, started making mental notes of everything around me and sent my location to my friends. The paranoia went up 100%

It's hard being a woman. It's so crazy. Before I enter a bus or keke, I always do many calculations and mental gymnastics. If the bus is filled with only men, then I won't enter, no matter how late I am to where I'm going. Even if I enter a keke with men, I'm praying silently.

I just finished “Tokunbo” on Netflix now and I love it! All the characters ate, but the little girl who played Nike owns my heart! And Iya Muli (Adunni Ade) was so good, I desperately want to see a stand-alone movie about her character🥹 Plus, Ramsey Nouah as a director👏

I still talk am this morning. No respect, no permission. It's the fools in the CS saying rubbish for me. Take the pictures down! Nigeria is a country that promotes lawlessness. Is it everything that these blogs see that they repost? Gutter behavior!

The Agenda Setting Theory of Media. Lmao. Even I fell prey to it without reading the story. Thank God for the people who came back to explain. This story is aimed to give patriarchy a weapon to talk about how cruel a woman can be.

Everyone is talking about Stay With Me, which is very obbious. I'm about to talk about Americanah being on that list. OF COURSE, YOU WOULD SEE A MAN LEAVING HIS WIFE AND CHILD TO GO BACK TO HIS SIDE CHICK/“FIRST LOVE” ROMANTIC! I don’t pray for that kind of romance in my life!

Literature also reminds us, all the time, that men hopelessly, passionately & desperately love women. Because: Stay With Me, The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle, Layla & Majnun, The Great Gatsby, Atonement, Pride & Prejudice, Love In A Time of Cholera, Americanah, Jane Eyre, Anthills, etc

I'm about to draw a very imperfect parallel, but indulge me ehn? If you've read Ogadinma (or Everything Will Be Alright) by Ukamaka Olisakwe, you agree with me that Ogadinma was a minor, right? So why do we have issues agreeing that Fa’iza from “Broken” is a minor too?

At 19, I was already reaping the repercussions of being a patriarchal princess/“one of the boys”, but I didn't see it till I was 22. From a former pick-me, I'm hoping she realizes before it's too late.

You’re 19 years old, so here’s my advice to you….pipe down. These men you’re capping for will take unreal advantage of you and your eyes go peel. Also, no woman in her right mind would support your misogynist rants in the name of poetry.

She articulated it better than I can😭 Bob is misogynistic, agreed, but so is over 60% of women😭 This is exactly why I don’t take TERFs seriously cuz in a bid to cater to “only women”, they open the doors of plenty -gynys and phobias that feminism is largely against.

A lot of cys women are not even feminists, let's be real, but whether we like it or not, the fight for liberation includes them. Those older market women, our aunties, female relatives, even our age mates have internalised misogyny but still, it doesn't exclude them from being…
