Our new report on the Information Laundering Cycle exposes a coordinated campaign to eliminate the guardrails against disinformation by a group of bad actors — including members of Congress and fringe bloggers — intent on using lies for political gain.
The Project will focus on three things:
1. Exposing the networks and money driving disinformation.
2. Educating the public on these threats and building resiliency against them.
3. Engaging policymakers to build effective long-term protections against disinformation.
They say democracy dies in darkness. The worst possible darkness is upon us, delivering lies as truth and weaponizing our biases against us.
We’re going to stand up to it and defeat it by shining our brightest light.

The American Sunlight Project team is growing. We’re excited to welcome Jessica Presley as our managing director and
@reedgalen
and
@triketora
to our advisory board!
JUST IN: Georgia election workers Ruby Freeman and Shaye Moss are asking a federal bankruptcy judge to enjoin Rudy Giuliani from continuing to defame them.
Disinformation researchers are often accused of attempting to censor speech, but as our co-founder noted on Threads, our work is focused on empowering people to know that the information sources they reach for are reliable. We’re building resiliency to an existential threat.
In an entirely expected move,
@shellenberger
’s “Public” newsletter appears to be poised to write a hit piece about The American Sunlight Project.
Here is our response to Public’s absurd inquiries, which they appear to have sourced from an online troll. 1/
As Mark Zuckerberg’ letter to Congress draws media attention, here is some important context on the accusations of censorship against disinformation researchers from ASP Co-Founder and Chief Communications Officer Carlos Álvarez-Aranyos.
In a major victory for transparency, Chairman Jordan has caved to our demands and released the transcript of our CEO’s deposition by his committee.
Now we need him to do the same with all of the other depositions he’s withholding.
@Jim_Jordan
: Americans deserve the whole truth.
Our researchers seem to have located the source of Public’s bizarre claims, and, unsurprisingly, it’s the X account of an online troll.
Is this what good journalistic practice looks like in 2024?
For
@shellenberger
, apparently so. 2/
“‘Disinformation knows no political party. Its ultimate victim is democracy. This threat is growing more acute each day, and you have become the primary obstacle to addressing it,’ Jankowicz told lawmakers.”
AI-driven disinformation presents novel threats to our national security, and our mission is to equip the American people with the tools they need to defeat those threats.
It’s going to be impossible to intimidate us. 6/6
The American Sunlight Project will investigate and expose the networks and money driving disinformation campaigns that undermine democracy. Without a shared set of facts and a trusted public square, American democracy can’t survive.
Arch-conspiracy theorist Jim Hoft says his Gateway Pundit site's parent company is in Chapter 11 bankruptcy, blaming "progressive liberal lawfare attacks." He's faced a series of defamation suits for pushing 2020 election conspiracy theories.
They’re doing it in Ukraine, and they will try to do it here. We need to develop the capability to defend ourselves, but the Weaponization Subcommittee is blocking our path.
Congress has spent years looking for government involvement in censorship. We have no issue with them continuing that search.
We’re just asking them to release their interview transcripts and conduct their investigations transparently. 4/
We’re very proud to announce the launch of Online Equality Watch (
@OnlineEquality
), a consortium aimed at countering gender- and identity-based disinformation and abuse. We’re very thankful for our partners in this important initiative.
At today's House Judiciary hearing, Congressman Lynch requested that all of the transcribed interviews by Congressman Jordan's Weaponization committee be entered into the record. Republicans tabled it, meaning that they are censoring information *during a hearing on censorship.*
The news about Vice President Harris is very likely to unleash a torrent of gendered disinformation, abuse and other online harms. Our CEO Nina Jankowicz, a leading expert on the subject who wrote “How To Be a Woman Online,” provides guidance on what we can expect moving forward.
In 2020 I led a study on gendered abuse and disinfo against women political candidates. We found 336k pieces of abuse & disinfo targeting 13 candidates; 78% of that targeted Kamala Harris. After Biden’s endorsement, here are some narratives and tropes we should look out for: (1/)
If fighting disinformation is “censorship,” how is society meant to manage thousands of authentic-looking, AI-built and targeted deepfake videos of authority figures saying different things in the midst of a global crisis? That future is here.
@robbysoave
Public also asserts that by putting more information into the public sphere, American Sunlight will be “aimed at preventing oversight of government involvement in censorship.”
It’s such a ridiculous claim that it’s frankly difficult to respond to. That said, we can try: 3/
We hope Public will publish facts, not falsehoods. But given their record, we aren’t getting our hopes up.
Regardless of what they write, we will continue to investigate and expose the networks and money driving and enabling disinformation, particularly from foreign nations. 5/
Excited to see many members of the House Judiciary Committee echo our demand for the full and immediate release of all transcripts of interviews with disinformation researchers. The committee’s efforts to intimidate researchers are sadly working, and they must stop.
“So many of the narratives that we saw back in 2020 are being repeated,” Jankowicz said. “[…] and unless politicians on both sides of the aisle stop engaging in it and call it out, it’s only going to get worse.”
@wiczipedia
ASP CEO Nina Jankowicz: “Well beyond the presidential race, these sorts of attacks aim to denigrate women and their value as human beings, and aim to encourage women to stay out of politics and public life. They have no place in our politics.”
@wiczipedia
Our CEO joined Lights On with Jessica Denson to discuss
@OnlineEquality
, a coalition effort to end gender- and identity-based disinformation and abuse once and for all. As she said in the video: “Enough is enough.”
@wiczipedia
@jessicadenson07
@meidastouch
We recently tracked disinformation about the the campus protests from anonymous chat boards to Congress. Our report shows that the
@FreeBeacon
was the first to take it mainstream. Their response: “We’re not mainstream.”
They’re not journalists either.
Rep.
@Jim_Jordan
used manipulated information to attack our CEO, who was 8 months pregnant at the time, and has just been fully exposed. He’s unfit for public office and should resign.
These allegations went all the way up to the U.S. Supreme Court. The Court could not find a single instance in the massive body of evidence it reviewed that supported the claim that the US government had unduly coerced social media platforms.
ASP CEO Nina Jankowicz will join Something Fest's Something Digital 2024 as a headline speaker where she will discuss her work to shed light on the lies that undermine democracy, like lies that threaten women in power.
A remarkable scene in the House as the Judiciary Committee hearing descended into chaos over the minority’s request to release the transcript of our CEO’s deposition. As we demanded in our recent letter to
@Jim_Jordan
: Release the transcripts! Full video:
Exposing the bad actors driving disinformation is an essential component of protecting our democracy. Democracy can’t survive without a trusted public square.
More than 150 fake news websites pushing Russian propaganda to US audiences are connected to John Mark Dougan, an American former law enforcement officer living in Moscow, according to a research report published by NewsGuard who monitors misinformation.
In light of Mark Zuckerberg’s letter to Congress, we renew our demand for Chairman
@Jim_Jordan
to release all transcripts of depositions and interviews with Meta employees, disinformation researchers, and others. Let’s get clarity from the people on the ground.
It is no longer possible to deny or ignore the threat of AI-driven disinformation. We’re working to combat it, but we need the American people to join the fight.
The challenge of deepfakes will only grow more severe as the videos become more realistic and their volume increases. We need Congress to act to protect our democracy.
A deepfake video of President Joe Biden bearing our logo is circulating on social media. Biden did not make this statement. PBS News did not authorize the use of this video and we do not condone altering news video or audio in any way that could mislead the audience.
Former NSA disinformation expert Nina Jankowicz joins Anthony Davis to discuss Russian meddling in US elections, Trump’s complicity and how to protect ourselves from undue influence going into November. Watch The Weekend Show at 8p ET/5p PT!
As our co-founder and chief communications officer Carlos Álvarez-Aranyos says, “fighting disinformation isn’t about silencing the liar. It’s about empowering the listener.”
“Unfortunately, there is an entire class of people that now believes the government […] is censoring some part of the American population,” she said. “I don’t think that’s going to go away anytime soon.” —ASP CEO
@wiczipedia
In our case, we don’t coordinate with the platforms at all. In fact, they’re increasingly part of the problem, and it will become far worse when AI-generated multimedia is indistinguishable from the real thing.
@RealCoffeeChoco
@NYPostOpinion
Academic researchers rarely, if ever, hold discretion rights to deplatform narratives they flag. Even if these employees consider research findings in making deplatforming decisions, one cannot infer causality, because the platform employees deploy judgement.
On Mark Zuckerberg’s letter to Congress: Chairman Jordan conducted dozens of interviews of Meta employees who, under penalty of perjury, said they didn’t feel pressured or coerced by requests from the administration. Why hasn’t he released those transcripts?
"It’s exhausting, and no one deserves this for simply doing their job." Nina Jankowicz tells InnovationAus about her research on gendered and identity-based violence online.
We have to shine a light on the extremist actors and their funders threatening our democratic process and our national security. It's time to bring clarity to a world clouded by disinformation.
“Jankowicz said the dismissal of Ms Harris as the ‘DEI candidate’ was also a feature of the last presidential campaign. ‘It's a pretty well-worn way that we talk about women in positions of power; [that] they couldn't have gotten there on their own.’”
Our latest newsletter just went out. It provides updates and insights on the fight against disinformation. If you’re not signed up, you can do so on our website: .
Our CEO
@wiczipedia
made it clear that the Supreme Court’s decision in Murthy v. Missouri doesn’t undo the GOP’s campaign to silence disinformation researchers, which has left our country exposed to grave national security threats.
ASP CEO Nina Jankowicz joins The 1A to talk disinformation and the election: How and why are falsehoods spreading this election cycle? And how can we fight back?
“In a study in 2020, Jankowicz, co-founder of disinformation watchdog American Sunlight Project, found that out of 336,000 pieces of gendered abuse and disinformation content against 13 female political candidates, 78 per cent targeted Harris.”
@wiczipedia
So the Weaponization Subcommittee released an 800-page report featuring internal emails, but they won't release the transcripts of their interviews for FULL transparency to the American public.
@Jim_Jordan
Our co-founder and CEO
@wiczipedia
joined
@AlexWitt
on
@MSNBC
to discuss gendered and racial disinformation in the context of the election and the threats posed by foreign disinformation campaigns.
"’It's important to label these narratives and lies as what they are: an attempt to undermine a powerful woman's public service because of her gender, her background, her skin color,’ said Nina Jankowicz, co-founder of the […] American Sunlight Project.”
ASP CEO
@wizcipedia
— who was named one of TIME Magazine’s Top 100 in AI — was a panelist at the Ai4 conference in Las Vegas this past week.
We look forward to continuing constructive dialogue to help shape AI as a force for good rather than a mass disinformation tool.
“The good news is, Americans are now more aware that social media algorithms are tailoring the information aimed at them […] “Everybody has a responsibility to be vetting their information,” [Jankowicz] said.”
Our CEO
@wiczipedia
joined our advisory board member
@katieharbath
for an important conversation about disinformation on “Impossible Tradeoffs.” Listen here!
The attacks against disinformation researchers have been incredibly effective, leaving our nation vulnerable to one of the gravest national security threats in modern times. We are mounting a defense of researchers — who are essential to mapping this threat to our democracy.
This week, the Supreme Court is likely to reveal their decision in Murthy v. Missouri, a case in which our CEO
@wiczipedia
was originally a named plaintiff. The decision will have a profound impact on the nation’s response to disinformation threats.
For
@MSNBC
, I was pleased to write about the Supreme Court’s decision to throw out Murthy v Missouri, and the effect this case and the broader assault on disinformation research can have on individuals.
Members of Congress, media amplifiers, and online fringe personalities have used the "Information Laundering Cycle" to manipulate public perception of disinformation research and erode the integrity of democratic discourse over the past four years.
Our CEO
@wiczipedia
will join
@AlexWitt
on
@MSNBC
at 2:50PM ET today to continue the conversation on the threat of disinformation to the upcoming election. Tune in!
These threats are very real, and confronting them is a matter of national security. If we allow foreign states to turn our open society against us, we will compromise our future.
Nina Jankowicz's group here is falsely suggesting that the
@FreeBeacon
simply regurgitated stuff from anonymous chat boards about Soros funding for anti-Israel groups, or that what Free Beacon reported was inaccurate.
Amazing: the website, for
@americansunproj
(the "X" handle) is already generating "unsecure" warnings from Google and Explorer, suggesting a cyberattack on it.
This week, we launched our initial investigations to better understand the sources of disinformation and how false messaging reaches our public discourse. We’re looking forward to sharing our findings as they become available.
“A 2021 report […] authored by Nina Jankowicz, Jillian Hunchak, and Alexandra Pavliuc, explored the ‘direct and indirect impacts of gendered and sexualized disinformation on women in public life.’”
@wiczipedia
"If you feel yourself getting emotional and in this case, it might be shock or disgust, that's a good indication that you're probably being manipulated…" —
@wiczipedia
to
@CBSNews
Nina Jankowicz at the Ai4 Summit: “I’ve dealt with a lot of disinformation aimed at me, but I also study the way that it moves around, and AI has certainly been an area of concern of mine for a long time.”
That’s probably because everyone around here is subject to harassment and death threats, Jeryl, for exposing people making deepfakes and trying to turn our freedoms against us.
The
@AmericanSunProj
and Nina Jankowicz (
@wiczipedia
) say their mission is to "Expose deceptive information practices and the networks and money that drive them."
So who is funding The American Sunlight Project? "Ms. Jankowicz declined to... disclose its donors."
😬
"I think people still want to have good information at their fingertips. I do believe that. And I think if we give them the skills they need to navigate today’s information environment, it only takes a little bit of guidance so they can do that better."
“I’ve spoken to many people who are evaluating whether to continue in this field because of the risks it now involves,” [ASP CEO
@wiczipedia
] told me. “That should worry everyone who cares about free expression.”
This Memorial Day, let’s remember our heroes by recommitting ourselves to the ideals they fought and died for. Living up to their dreams is the best way to honor their legacy.
In today’s political climate, many people are claiming that efforts to counter disinformation are a form of censorship. Let’s be clear: They're not. Read our bi-weekly newsletter for more
