Glad this is being covered.
Disgusted that, as has long been the case, Palestinian voices are generally ignored or disbelieved unless they are corroborated or legitimitized by Israelis.
@hahnscratch
omg man. you've been through so much and that you came out on the other side is a testament to your fortitude. glad to have you in the brotherhood
An emergency vigil for Aaron Bushnell, the U.S. Air Force member who died after setting himself on fire in front of the Israeli embassy while yelling “free Palestine!,” has been announced
The vigil will happen in front of the Army Recruitment Office in Times Square tomorrow
A lot of people complain that SF spends a bunch of money to address homelessness but doesn't actually question where it actually goes. Lets look at the recent purchase of 42 Otis as one example of how massive giveaways to the Mayor's allies siphon away critical dollars.
NO COPS ALLOWED. That’s the confirmed policy of the bakery chain Reem’s. One of our officers was denied service last weekend because he was in uniform. Reem’s confirms that they will not serve anyone armed and in uniform. Presumably, this includes members of the US Military.
Dean Preston's emergency appropriation to acquire currently for-sale apartment buildings is a necessary step to establish a social housing program in San Francisco. I challenge everyone calling themselves pro-housing to voice their support of it.
Rents in Minneapolis need to grow 15-20% to justify the cost of new construction.
You won't see many new buildings in the city until that happens.
Not an opinion. Just math.
San Francisco is a prime example of what happens when rich people put people without the capability, interest, or ethics to lead a major city in charge of it.
In fiscal year 2022, San Francisco Deputy Sheriff Barry Bloom’s annual pay was $123,790, but with overtime he took in $530,935, according to a Chronicle review of city records.
San Francisco is in its current state because twirpy fact challenged megalomaniac racists like Garry here have held the levers of power for generations.
I always appreciate the timely reminder that all these people complaining about having to respect the civil rights of homeless people never wanted to house them in the first place.
They don't want to solve homelessness.
They just don't want to see it.
Let me translate. "I paid no attention to this part of town when it was shrouded by a freeway and a lot of black people lived here. Once progressives got rid of the freeway I helped get rid of the black people."
A friend reminded today how politicians chased homeless people out of parks, then out of downtown, then out of neighborhoods, and now they go onto transit because they have nowhere else. The people in crisis don't disappear, they just move
Yes! We must REFUND the Police. It’s the key to a safe and clean San Francisco every day. SFPD must be returned to >2000 officers within 18 months from 1400 where it has been allowed to fall, and the police force must be fully empowered to enforce ALL laws. Compensate ALL
I love it when NIMBYs render the "impacts" of future rezonings to scare people but accidentally make something really encouraging. More people should have access to Dolores Park.
Imagine how $143K could have been better used to make this a safe event that drew people from all over the Bay to enjoy our city & spend money near Dolores Park. Instead we poured a bunch of slop into the pig trough and all we got was a civil right lawsuit
funny. i too was called both a kike and commie for being a soviet jewish refugee and i have never been able to relate to those embracing genocide because their feelings were hurt.
As a kid who was called kike on the bus & taught that Jews begged the Romans to kill Jesus, I can relate.
US schools have long been hostile to Jews. That hostility is now in full view. The Oakland teach-in & union resolutions that omit the hostages & 10/7 are tip of the iceberg.
San Francisco ALREADY has a zero emission electric fleet, including on this line. In fact, we've shown how expanding the overhead line system to electrify the rest of our transit system is faster, cheaper, environmentally, and operationally superior to the battery electric bus.
#DidYouKnow
that
#SFMuni
has the greenest fleet in North America, creating >.01% of city greenhouse gases by running on Hetch Hetchy hydropower!
And we're not done! We're rolling out the electric fleet to cut those emissions even more⚡️⚡️

Calling BS on this...
1. Free Palestine is not antisemitic & I don't think they ever advertised their Jewishness.
2. It was a window. They did not need to close for weeks and do an unpermitted remodel
3. VC funded operation with insurance raised $100k under false pretenses
Today we celebrated the reopening of Smitten, a Jewish-owned business in the Mission that was vandalized, including graffiti relating to the war in Israel/Gaza. We’ll never let hate prevail in San Francisco. I’m proud of the Smitten team & the community that rallied against hate.
The only thing we know is the developer pulled permits to install a sprinkler system here back in 2020 and never commenced work. Leaving a fully framed wood structure unprotected & unsprinklered seems negligent but I also don't want to throw homeless people into a woodchipper.
look at this guy. his buddy was murdered in the district governed by a guy he likely supports, in a city with a DA he supports, and a mayor who spends all the money on the cops he supports. these people can't be reasoned with and should be run out of town.
Bob Lee was a friend to me & multiple people in my firm. My heart goes out to his loved ones.
Chesa Boudin, & the criminal-loving city council that enabled him & a lawless SF for years, have Bob’s literal blood on their hands. Take action.

Samuel Bell was the friend of a friend who also cycles around Chicago and routinely faces close calls with raging cagers. My friend called him among the best people all around who gave freely his time and money in the community. May his memory be a blessing and a spark.
[ BICYCLIST KILLED ] Even if you don't bike, people you know do. Please drive like your own loved ones bikes on these streets. Samuel Bell, 44 died today on the way to the hospital after being hit by a driver.
I'm honestly shocked at the ham handedness of the DAs coverup. You're supposed to charge and blow the case, not dig in and be forced to take it and have it taken away from you. Chesa didn't fire her for ideology but for utter incompetence.
incredible how our betters and opinion makers just don't think all that hard. a blue flu that plays itself out with low clearances, slagging on reform in personal interactions with victims, and a sustained media campaign while CRIME IS DROPPING means something else entirely.
Is absolutely hilarious to see the people who give Dean shit for not embracing every dumbass private development project argue strenuously against affordable housing and a site that's been planned for affordable housing for years
YIMBYs got all bent out of shape yesterday at a joke calling them the pro-lifers of housing; this is precisely why. A low-income community came together to demand community control of development & a 100% affordable project & won after years of struggle. But they lament a ghost
@itslaylas
Would the statement "I still support the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising, South African freedom struggle, Algerian & Haitian revolutions, and at Turner's Rebellion" get a professor yelled at?
UPDATE:
@SFDAOffice
@BrookeJenkinsSF
: “Reckless & irresponsible statements” like those tweeted by
@elonmusk
“assumed incorrect circumstances about Mr. Lee’s death, served to mislead the world in their perceptions of San Francisco & also negatively impact the pursuit of justice”
If these self-described urbanists are so afraid of living in San Francisco Maybe they should just move to Marin where they go shopping and safe environments surrounded by the white rich people they crave
It was really only a matter of time that our "supply-side liberals" trained their attention on unions. Fact is that union jobs are faster, safer, and more productive than their non-union counterparts. Just because smart-boy pundits like Ezra say otherwise means nothing.
People who understand the construction industry and how to identify the various cost factors in play show labor standards to have little to no cost impact. This is yet another data point in the drive to impoverish construciton workers.
Dude. SF is sitting on 10s of thousands of approved units that "need rents to rise by 20%" according to developer lobbyists to get built. Approvals are pretty well streamlined but permits still take a while
In June alone, Austin Texas permitted 1,156 units of new apartments—which is more than twice as many as San Francisco has permitted in the entirety of 2024. In total, Austin is on track to allow ~10x as many new units as SF this year
SF's housing policy is suffocating the city
Capitalism superfans say that rent control is bad because it'll stop new housing construction but will simultaneously believe that developers will build in a declining rent environment. Which one is it kids?
“They argue that rent control would deter developers from building more houses, which would only worsen the housing supply crisis in the United States.”
Herein lies the problem when housing is driven by profit, not people.
Just arrived to San Francisco and walking through the Tenderloin to my AirBnB. This is one of the most depressing places I've seen. So many drugged out people standing up while fully bent over with their head to the ground, taking what appears to be fentanyl. Tents everywhere,
Nothing really except that this building is probably only worth a fraction of that price, making it a multi-million dollar giveaway to a developer with a habit of donating to the mayor's conservative allies and pet projects including recalls and ballot measures.
Tech on tech crime (allegedly). I knew it. Did you know it? Every person who opened their mouth to blame progressive justice policy or otherwise slam San Francisco needs to eat a bowl of diarrhea.
suburbanites move to SF then wish to bring their suburban sensibilities and fears along with them. fitting that a one-time organizer for a GOP presidential candidate is getting these calls.
This is why I knock on doors and give my cell to everyone I talk to.
So many D9 residents reach out to me because they feel voiceless at City Hall.
From arson, to violence, to street conditions I hear daily from folks who just want to be safe and have the basics done right.
WE MUST LET DEVELOPERS BUILD WHATEVER THEY WANT TO LOWER RENTS
DEVELOPERS WONT BUILD IF RENTS DONT GO UP
Cant be both and you have to pick one

OPINION: "Universal rent control for all residences in San Francisco is political theater, not a serious policy solution," writes Jane Natoli and Corey Smith.
Its good to see someone taking the underlying economics of his political program seriously. Private for-profit development needs high rents and rent growth. Affordability is not its goal
“One of the challenges we face in San Francisco is we need the rent to go back up.”
It is so refreshing to hear YIMBYs say this stuff out loud. Private developers have no plan for building new housing when rents actually go down.
My brother in the fires of the rapture-pointing out that a political figure worked for AIPAC, to condemn its politics (funding TERFs and insurrectionists & taking out shul presidents in Congress), is not conflating AIPAC with Jewish people.
That's you. You're doing that
Protesters block Golden Gate Bridge.
Protesters get arrested.
DA charges protesters.
The response? “There’s a pro-Israel Jew behind the curtain controlling the DA!”
Criticize the charges all you want. But stop w/ the classic antisemitic trope that Jews control the government.
The past year called the question for so many Jews: which side are you on? Is it that of nationalistic tribalism summoning death in pursuit of a utopia free from the nasty other or that of an ecumenical humanity that sees ourselves in the suffering of others and condemns it all
I have been pro-Palestine for as long as I can remember, but the extent to which I have unlearned so much Zionist propaganda this last year is outstanding
I know I am not alone
This report is an incredible development. Millions of SF of mostly vacant commercial space exists in 20th centry vintage industrial parks close to jobs & transit. Underappreciated fact: their redevelopment will trigger reassessment that will add millions $ to public coffers.
D9 candidate with no connection or history to D10/Baview Hunters Point proposes confining thousands of homeless people in the southeast corner of the city on toxic land at the federal government has failed to clean up for years. Slow clap everybody
🚨Today, I am announcing a bold vision to tackle SF's addiction, mental health, + homelessness crises.
It's time to stop putting band-aids on festering wounds, and to start thinking as big as the problem.
We can all see the status quo has failed, here's my plan to change it: 🧵
NEW: The Walgreens at 16th/Geary in San Francisco has chained up the freezer section ⛓️
Workers said normally shoplifters clean out all the pizza and ice cream every night. They’re usually hit 20x a day. The whole store is virtually locked up.

I would say that public housing advocates have been explicit in identifying government's deliberate and racist abandonment of public housing as a major cause of its failure, and that our approach to its revival is intended to forthrightly address those issues.
I wish fans of public housing would more explicitly acknowledge the repeated catastrophes this policy has created and address the scepticism this naturally causes.
So lets sum it up. A connected developer stands to be paid about $1000/sf while making $3-6 million dollars on an empty building built by with unlivable wages. Here's the kicker
@SFjkdineen
gave the developer a sympathetic write-up in the Chronicle
SFPD staffing levels are reaching a crisis level. Officers are spending more time responding to 911 calls, meaning less time for foot patrols and community engagement. We need to think critically about how we’re going to fully staff SFPD (2/2)
Still true. Imagine forcing every person in San Francisco to have a monthly $60 subscription for a service that both makes everything worse and actively prevents things from being better. What a deal
the algebra freakout is so damn funny. these people NEED to have something called ALGEBRA because they're totally unable to understand that algebraic thinking is developed and built up as starting into he 1st grade and refuse to listen to educators who know better.
the social housing program cannot stop with simply acquiring old buildings and adding ADUs. while necessary it is insufficient & if we are truly going to have housing for people at all income levels we're going to have to build, and build all over the city.
I've been asked to share this campaign with my own words so I'm doing so. As
@BonsaiSky
, and many others have said, its a verified campaign that will really get to Gazans who need it. Give whatever you can and share it yourself. Please make up for the donations I can't make rn
why are our elected officials trying to turn San Francisco into a sleepy little bedroom community? Lack of housing and poor transit are already forcing stores, bars, & restaurants to close early. This ain't helping.
Mayor London Breed is proposing new legislation that would force some stores in the Tenderloin to close earlier—and impose $1,000 fines every hour for those that don't comply.
@rockera_bella
@mattduss
He's not asked to be an expert on "Arab matters." He is sharing his observation that Israel is just like the old American Jim Crow apartheid state he has plenty of expertise to speak on those matters
Just a reminder that
a.The governor is out there preening about climate change while allowing the destruction of clean transit in favor of road building
b.The mayor is pouring more money into the useless police while starving vital city services.
The people who have ruled San Francisco for generations are calling for change...by that they mean giving them more power to do the same things they've been doing for generations.
NEW: San Francisco is in a rough patch. A constellation of centrist groups have a plan to get it on track -- and 2024 is a big moment.
Grow, Together, Abundant, and Neighbors share similar names/goals: booting progressives from SF Dem Party, Board of Supes, and judiciary (1)
