team i have edited my querymanager form & mswl to try and help fight this, but as a general rule if there is any sort of speculative/imagined/fantastical element to your book please try me
how many people are not querying me because my listed genre of "speculative fiction" is confusing them....I am beginning to become alarmed at the questions I'm getting....if your book has a hint of ANYTHING magical/fantastical/sci-fi-y I am open to it pls
I dunno how to properly articulate the agony of reading a book knowing you're going to offer on it by like page 80 and then having to hold yourself together and make yourself finish the rest of the book like a reasonable person before doing so
✨I'm now an SFF agent
@ladderbirdlit
& open to queries! Super excited to join such an amazing team— I look forward to connecting w/editors in Jan !!
While I remain at UPC acquiring nonfic, I always knew I'd get back into the world of SFF someday. 😊 Read on for a

hehe I passed on one of my clients in spring of 2023 as a bb agent because I wasn't confident I could sell the book...was still thinking about them 8 months later so I emailed them out of the blue asking if it was still available and I could offer rep. Anyways we sold it 🥰
It's 2 days to my 1 year anniversary as an agent, and in 2023 I:
*Made 9 offers, signed 7 clients
*Took 9 books on sub (clients writing in multiple genres/age groups)
*Sold 4 (including 1 in a preempt, 1 at auction, and 1 that went from submission to offer in 15 days)
how many people are not querying me because my listed genre of "speculative fiction" is confusing them....I am beginning to become alarmed at the questions I'm getting....if your book has a hint of ANYTHING magical/fantastical/sci-fi-y I am open to it pls

hello my sweet querying writers, if you address me as "Ms" in your query I'm not holding it against you, just as I will not hold it against you if your query is addressed to the wrong person entirely. That'd be silly ☺️
You're welcome to just say "Dear Allegra" & skip the fuss
I'm instituting a new
#query
rule: if you ever query me with a prologue 4+ pages long as your sample & I pass, you can query me again using your first chapter instead, no questions asked
I might pass again but I think prologue writing is really hard & I hate judging people on it

saw this perfectly.

I know that my fields of rep are ultimately a bit narrow, but whenever I close to all but bipoc authors my queries flatline. 26 queries last month, 36 the month before. I refuse to believe there aren't more bipoc SFF writers out there—query me please!!

The duke stole my heart too
(FUN! FUNNY! HEARTBREAKING! UN-PUT-DOWNABLE! WITH THE MOST CHAOTIC FOUND FAMILY!! and really, a heartfelt love letter to trans kids everywhere who are messy and hurting and trying their best in a very confusing, often hostile world)
Queries are on 0, partials/fulls are on only 5, now seems as good a time as any—I'm open to any marginalized writers working in the SFF or broadly speculative space (for YA and Adult)!

big changes coming my way professionally, and I'm not usually the sort to set yearly goals—but I hope this is a year of great authors, big sales, and successful client debuts :) let's go agenting year 2!!!!!
never have to personalize a query to me, it has 0 bearing on my ultimate decision. I've requested materials from people who didn't even write my name correctly. if I like your book I like your book
@MagicalHippo
I've often wondered about this as well. So I analyzed over 400 successful query letters posted in QT success stories () and found that only about 23% were personalized.
This book went on sub March 7th 2023 (a year next week!), my second book on sub ever, and now I am slobbering over this cover.
Please everyone feast your eyes!!! And preorder!!! (l!nk below)
Cover launch! SORCERY AND SMALL MAGICS by

If I can be sappy since Sul isn't on this app, when I first conceived of being an agent, it was with her as my first author and this as my first book. Can't wait for y'all to read🩸
Bita's pulled off the perfect mash of Divine Rivals/Emily Wilde/Hart & Mercy set in a magic, industrializing Chicago with a grumpy apothecarist & the whirlwind sunshine woman who comes to save his shop (+ the anonymous letters that connect them) and she's working with ME!!!!! 😍

I promise you your editor isn't trying to slim down your figure count just to be mean, there are a lot of things to consider but
#1
for me is: do you need this image to DEVELOP your point or is it just tacked on? Is color critical for understanding, or do you just like color?
I'm still p new, but starting as an agent I found myself wishing for more new-agent resources, more how-to, questions I didn't know to ask, even tho my agency is amazing
+ agenting knowledge really expanded my horizons as a writer. Would anyone be interested in a lil newsletter?
Spent 2 hours as agent me personalizing a bunch of rejections & realized that my rejection is always, always "I didn't have a vision for this project." I couldn't see exactly how to revise & sell it. When I can see that, market & execution don't matter—I'll help you get there
I am closing to queries from everyone EXCEPT bipoc writers on Monday the 29th! Git yer queries in this weekend if you've been eyeing me and don't fall into that group. Reopening ?? maybe early summer.

As people query me (wow!!!) a very very gentle reminder not to query 2 Ladderbird agents simultaneously. If you already have a query out with one of my colleagues, you have to wait for them to respond or withdraw it. And yes I can see if you're out to another agent. Easy mistake!

taylor's book absolutely killed me—a gorgeously written princess mononoke-esque adult eco-fantasy. Her line level skill is unmatched, the romance was so excruciating, and i can't wait to get it into the hands of editors and readers. if you liked GODKILLER you'll love this book

great news everyone I just finished one of them & it's a perfect, amazing, terrifying YA, dark academic speculative thriller about the way the institution of science mistreats and misuses people of color ft. creepy psychological suspense elements + messed up/mutated flora & fauna

My querymanager will remain open over the holidays, but I'm going to hit pause on sending rejections between Dec 21-Jan 3
If you query me during this period you will only hear from me if I'm requesting more ❄️
Thrifted a KitchenAid stand mixer and I intend to use it every day. Imma start whisking my cereal. Hell pour my drinking water in there and whisk that too.
You will know when I'm offering an actual R&R. I will give you a full edit letter. I will lay out the process. We will go back and forth on an outline, and I will only ask you to revise a sample of ~100 pages, not the whole book.
I don't believe in vague R&Rs

showing off my individualized author dashboards that keep a live calculator of each book's advances, subrights, copies sold, royalties, and overall earnings and my partner went "Enough of this. I'm tired of you being good at Airtable."
so sad to report that every time I build a new dashboard or create a new automation my Airtable elitism grows. Yeah you use Airtable but do you use Airtable LIKE ME????
My weird skill is forwarding queries on to other Ladderbird agents mere days before the authors get an offer of rep elsewhere. This has happened in 22% of my forwards. I say "you might like this..." and then they're immediately on deadline
There are only 3 genres on my querymanager: adult, crossover, or ya "speculative"—this is because I use the term loosely to cover any book with a magical bend + all sorts of sci fi, fantasy, & horror. You can query me w/ any genre so long as theres a hint of something magical—
Whenever I update my query form it's to remove another question lol
Sometimes I look at things & go "love reading these responses, but they aren't affecting my decisions at all, so I'm not gonna waste writers' time"
Querying is a numbers game; I know y'all gotta keep it moving

Slightly updated MSWL with new dream projects & updated Nos is now live on my website () + wherever else my mswl appears online. My response time on queries is formally 1-2 weeks now & I've signed some great adult clients so my current priority is YA (SFF)
My favorite thing when doing outreach is when scholars say "I don't have any book projects right now, but you should reach out to [xyz early career scholar]"
Following the threads until they unravel into a project is truly a joy

day! I represent authors in the Adult, YA, and crossover SFF space. I am always looking for sharp writing, punchy characters, and big emotions. ☺️ Query me!
You can read my full wishlist here:
preorder this book. I'm so serious. No need to look it up, just go preorder. You won't regret it. If you're a fan of chaotic bards, slowburns, and/or Howl's Moving Castle you will be a fan of this. Also it's gay.
—conflate the two things (true R&Rs vs personalized feedback) bcs sometimes I give feedback just bcs I can & want you to be successful elsewhere, not bcz I'm guaranteeing I will love your ms if you return to me. But I will say—I ❤️ seeing revised manuscripts & repeat authors 6/6
