'To call 2020 the year of the unexpected, I believe, would be an understatement and an injustice.'
I've written this piece for
@bowelcanceruk
to share the journey my fiancé Robert & I have been on with
#bowelcancer
since September.

It is so disappointing to receive negative comments when telling people I'm studying Nursing 😞 You may not be brave enough to do a demanding job that requires academic knowledge & skill plus a whole range of emotions but I am. Positivity & encouragement is key for students 👌🏻
Our beautiful baby girl decided she couldn't wait for her planned section date & wanted to meet us a few days early!
Willow Caitlyn, you are our little miracle and we feel so blessed 😍💞
Today a colleague said to me 'at least when you're a nurse I know you'll speak to B2 staff nicely & with respect'. 💔😔 Why does it matter what band you are? Surely everyone deserves to be respected regardless of job title/Band? We are ALL the NHS. Please be kind to all.
A few times on placement I've seen discourtesy towards RNs & HCAs, I've been referred to as 'the student' & overheard 'she's just here to help with obs' (I corrected this). Forget what colour you're wearing & your pay band. We should ALL have the same goal - caring for patients.
Practice assessor told me yesterday that when they found out they were having a student they 'asked if they could get rid of them'...
Only just reflecting on this now but now I totally get why students dread placements if this is some of the ways we get thought of/received 🥺🥺
WE'RE MARRIED 😍😭♥️👰🏻🤵🏻
Best day of our lives so far, we have had the most amazing and perfect day and feel so lucky to have been surrounded by so much love!
Thank you all for your kind wishes, we are truly blessed ♥️🥰
My friend has just told me her placement have told their StNs that they are in the HCA numbers because they've sent their paid HCAs to other wards to help out.
We know the pressures that everywhere is under but please don't treat StNs like this 😩🥺 we are supernumerary ‼️
So we're not allowed water bottles on the ward...that's fine, I can cope with walking a few extra steps for a drink.
But not being allowed to go for a drink of water until 10:45am when you started at 7:30am...not sure I feel okay with that...😭
Could cry with with happiness right now. After doubting myself 4yrs ago & doing a Business degree instead of what I truly wanted to do, I've just received an offer for Adult Nursing at
#plymuni
. 🎉🎊🤩 So so excited and grateful for this opportunity 🎉🎊
The consultants gave out little Christmas gifts to the team and they got me something too 🥺😭🥰
I've only been there 7wks but it was so lovely to be thought of! It's not about the physical gift but to feel included means so much as a Student! 🥰
Please can we ban the phrase 'you should get hospital experience first'
Just had calls from my mum & aunt , neither are nurses, both have spoken to retired nurses at a funeral today...apparently you need hospital experience to be a DN/work in a community rehab ward🥱😑
I have no words to describe the emotions I have after finishing my last ever shift as a Student Nurse 🥹 I can't believe I've done it, finally 😱😭 I started back in January with about 900 hours to complete, it's been hard work & full-on but this feeling is incredible!
Worst thing about a 5:30am alarm is knowing that you have a 5:30am alarm...especially when you wake up at 2:30am and 4:30am panicking that you have missed the 5:30am alarm 🙃🙃
Just worked my last shift with my practice assessor... The tears came 😭😭 I was likened to a sponge who absorbs knowledge and have been told to apply for a job there when the time comes 😭 I'm so thankful for this placement, my heart is so full 😭♥️

Dear placement hosts,
We love coming to you as Students & are very excited when we find out where we get placed. However, it is not fun when Student Info packs are outdated (had one today from 2009 🙃) & incorrect. Please update them with accurate info 🙏
From StNs everywhere
I'd like to say again how appreciated the work of our lecturers is at this difficult, complex time. There was no plan for this, no contingency. You can't please everyone, you are doing your very best and that is appreciated by the majority of us in
#PUNC19
. Thank you 💜
It's sad when I hear fellow
#studentnurses
are enjoying an area & would like apply for a job but won't because they've been poorly treated by staff 🤦🏻♀️ This is one of the major factors affect recruitment & retention in the NHS. A massive shift in culture is needed desperately.
Sadly this is so common in StNs 🥺😞
Sure we know it's going to be tough, we expect that but doing intense placement hrs, alongside assignments, paid work & being a partner/parent etc is not sustainable.
But as 'it's always been that way' we are expected to deal with it 🤦🏻♀️
RE: burn out
Does anyone else’s uni group chat look like this?
Unsure how common it is to work a recommended 37.5-45 hrs on placement p/w - with essays & deadlines & no study time factored into placement timetabling?
Any info?

This time last year we were sharing some pretty scary news with our family and friends.
This year, our boy would like to share the best news that we have been blessed with 🥰
👫🐶👶 Nanny Logan's contract starts Spring 2022, he's going to be the best big brother ever 😍
A whole week of Willow 🥺♥️
Cannot believe we've been parents to our beautiful girl for a whole week 😭 she's the centre of our world and we feel like the luckiest people in the world 🥰
2021...
💍Married the love of my life
🏡 Renovated our whole house
🐶 Gained a baby dog brother
💉Survived another yr as a StN
🎗️Husband is 100% cancer-free
👶🏻 Now awaiting our baby girl
2021 was miles better than 2020 - not that it was hard to beat! 2022 we have high hopes 😍
We survived the first day on our own 🎉🙌🏼😅
We made it out of the house to post some parcels, I managed to have breakfast and lunch and do 2 loads of washing and only endured 1 projectile vomit episode...🙈
Day 1 done Baby Girl 🙌🏼💞
2300hrs ✅ First Class Honours ✅🥹
When starting in 2019, I never envisaged experiencing a pandemic, my fiancé having cancer, then getting married & having a baby!
What a rollercoaster-some of my highest highs & lowest lows but I've done it 🥹 Cath Lab I'm ready for you 🤩
After all my laptop drama and needing to re-write my assignment in a day, so relieved to have got a lovely 80% mark, just the boost of confidence needed ahead of tomorrow's exam! 🙈🎉🤩
#PUNC19
I've done it 😭 last written assignment for the degree is done and all before baby girl arrives 🤰🏻👶🏻.
I have never been a start/finish early student, I am so proud of myself for breaking that habit this time 🤣🙈
Today I talked to the Ward Manager about some mildly disappointing things I experienced during the 8 wks. These were well received & I feel glad that we had a good relationship & I felt able to do this in the hope of improving the experience for future students!
#PUNC19
Students shouldn't need to speak up to protect their supernumerary status - it should be respected consistently & without question.
We understand staffing issues but we should still be supported in practice to learn from registered staff & not be solely seen as an extra number.
@RNsteffers
@Punc21Jade
I worry for students who aren't confident enough to speak up - they shouldn't be put in that position in the first place. Supernumerary status is there for our protection & for us to learn, sadly this seems to be dwindling & is becoming accepted because of the current climate.
If our 2nd placement starting in May is postponed due to
#COVID
ー19, instead of setting us back by months, could 2nd year modules start being taught remotely from May? Then when the pandemic calms we could have consecutive placements to ensure we don't fall behind? 🤷🏻♀️
#PUNC19
YES 👏🏼
StNs are the next generation, we are paying to train & come to work alongside you! We are not a threat, we just want to learn & do a good job.
🙏Please:
Respect our supernumerary status
Teach us
Don't treat us with hostility/negativity
Everyone starts somewhere ☺️
@alisonleary1
Nursing at its most short-sighted 🙄 It starts with students. If you can’t learn how to value students, forget filling those vacancies. Undervalued staff don’t stay. If you want to retain staff, look after them - and upper management MUST lead the way on that as well as wards.
Woke up to a phonecall from an estate agent to say that our offer on a beautiful house has been accepted 🤩🎉🏡 2020 is going to be a very exciting year 🤩
Had the best day yesterday finding out that we're having a baby girl 😍💗
She's healthy & growing perfectly 🥰 we feel so grateful 🙏
(Logan 🐶 is super excited to be having a baby sister 🙈)
Talking in lectures is the most infuriating & disruptive thing. It is beyond disrespectful to the lecturer & other students who want to learn. If you don't want to listen, that's fine-it's your choice but don't take that choice away from others who do want to learn!
#WeStNs
Yesterday I gave a lecture to medical students. At the start I asked them to stop talking. I asked 6 times to no avail. Only when I removed my microphone & said I wouldn’t give the lecture did they stop.
Maybe overreacting, but I felt very sad, both for myself & for psychiatry
I wondered why my mum was trying to force us all to eat our weight in Pringles...
She's made my Dad, Brother and I one of these amazing advent calendars each 😍 even made sure the colour matched my living room, absolute Queen 👑
Love nights but it always blows my mind that I get home on Tuesday, go to sleep on Tuesday and then wake up and it's STILL TUESDAY. Anyone else?😂😂😂
#PUNC19
(disclaimer: this doesn't just happen on Tuesdays).
Appalling 🥺 but well done to the student for speaking out & raising concerns, and to those who took the concerns seriously.
Students need to have the courage to speak out & raise concerns, often they're the fresh pair of eyes/new perspective that uncovers poor practice.
A nurse has been sentenced to seven years in prison for the ill-treatment of patients on a hospital stroke unit.
Catherine Hudson was found guilty of drugging two patients to ‘keep them quiet’ while she worked shifts at Blackpool Victoria Hospital.
My darling fiancé is generally very supportive when it comes to me being a
#studentnurse
... Except when it comes to my placement shoes.
He finds them HILARIOUS. 👞
Years ago I would've cared but they're like slippers so who's the real winner here 🤔
#comfortoverfashion
#PUNC19
Like everywhere, my placement is so busy but the lead nurse spent time this wk doing assessor training last min (my former assessor still hasn't returned!) Today she got approved as an assessor & spent an hour with me to sign off my ePad 🥺 feel so lucky 🙏
A year ago today I received my offer from
@PlymUni
& today is my final lecture of Yr 1.
Hard to comprehend what I've achieved & the experience I've gained in just 1 year but I'm so thankful I took this step.

Tonight I reassured myself that it's okay to take time out & switch off when things get a little overwhelming. I've experienced burn-out before & it's not a place I wish to go back to. You don't have to over commit & be involved in everything, quality over quantity
#studentnurse
Just heard our baby's heartbeat for the first time 😭😍🥰
(And for the 1st time I experienced genuine person-centred care that took into account my feelings/wishes...game-changing for my perception of care I hope to receive 🙏)
If you are ill please don't come to work 😭
May not be Covid but please don't spread your cough/cold/sniffle to everyone else, ESPECIALLY vulnerable patients 😭
You are not a hero for turning up & making others ill.
*This extends to placement too*
Stay home. Get better.
Crazy to think that 3 years ago I was worried my then-fiancé was going to die or that he'd survive but we wouldn't be able to have children due to his chemo.
Now I'm stood here with our beautiful daughter & a Husband who's just hit 3 years cancer-free. We are so lucky 🥹😭❤️
So glad I've joined Twitter ahead of starting my degree in September! The
@WeStudentNurse
and
@StNurseProject
feeds are helping me feel more prepared 😅😅
Today, Robert is 1 chemo infusion down ✅ 7 more to go 🙏🤞🏼So proud of him 💙
Very very mild side effects so far, nothing big and scary (yet), praying he's lucky but I've made sure he's well prepared to minimise any that may occur. Wifey points +600

Not sure if it's effective for GP surgeries to send texts to elderly people saying 'your blood results show you are in pre-diabetic range. Kind regards' with no follow up information/contact 🤦🏻♀️
Spent 2hrs explaining to my father-in-law he's not diabetic & how to manage this 🙃
When you get home from a night shift to a hot water bottle warming the bed, dishes put away & dog collected for grandma/pops day care 😭♥️ best mother in law ever ❤️
Waking up to this after my night shift has made me super happy! In little over 1 month I will embarking on my new adventure! It's been a long time coming but I can't wait to get stuck in and give it my all! So thankful for this opportunity.

Yesterday was an amazing day...
✅Married my best friend 👰🏻🤵🏻🥰
✅Found out I passed the Edward Jenner course
✅Completed our perfect day with a Chinese 🍜
At least one of them was definitely a stand out moment... 🤣

Productive day! Visited a wedding venue, smashed out 1200 words to replace my lost assignment and visited the Priest to confirm our wedding date 👰🏻🤵🏻🥰 Feeling better today! 😅 Another 300 words and I'll be alright 😅🙈
#PUNC19
Really happy to have visited my placement area today! The people seem lovely & very welcoming which is a huge relief! Feeling worried though as I don't have any idea of what shifts I'll be working, just told to turn up at 7:30am on Mon 😬

After a horrible day yesterday, the nerves and worry for
#puncplacement
have been setting in. 😖 Robert has just offered to drop me to placement tomorrow so I don't have to worry about driving & parking, a small gesture but it means so much 😭❤️
😱😱 How will students afford travel to placement/university? How will nurses/other HCPs afford the commute to work?
People are being encouraged to return to offices/F2F working...but this makes it ridiculously hard!
Supervisor Feedback for Wk 1...'the staff have commented that you are smiley & friendly. I noticed you did obs on patients using your own initiative. You restocked the treatment room when not busy (that’s a real help, as in busy times we need things stocked).
😃
#puncplacement
I scrubbed in for 2 angiograms today for the very first time 🥹 managed to set up my table and hand the right things at the right time without dropping anything or de-sterilising myself 🙌🏼 can't believe this is going to be my job 🥹🤩

So many student nurses tweeting about being called The Student. Should we as nurses and lecturers be taking a good look at ourselves and change this? I mean school teachers, priests and pastors have larger numbers to deal with...
As the start of Uni draws nearer, I am beginning to feel increasingly positive about choosing to take the leap of faith & pursue a career in Nursing. I already feel so supported and in the best position to start this journey 🥰 thank you so much everyone in the nurse community ❤️
Feeling really motivated after receiving clarification on what is happening for the rest of Yr 1 😅 Thank you to all our lecturers & the uni team for working so hard to get things sorted for us in this uncertain time. Your efforts are hugely appreciated. We've got this

Finally made it 🥹👩🏻🎓 hasn't been the smoothest journey but I've overcome so much with the love & support of my amazing family and friends, and the best Personal Tutors (
@MerielChudleigh
& Pollyanna 🙏) 🥹 So proud to have my beautiful girl there with us ♥️
#PlymGrad
I won't lie, knowing that some Unis have started closing and encouraging home-study whilst me & my friends are braving hours on public transport to get down to a busy uni is making me a bit anxious 😬
#PUNC19
Best news today...
Robert had a call with his Oncologist before starting Round 2 tomorrow. She's attended research seminars comparing the efficacy of 3m vs 6m of adjuvant chemo & has recommended the Robert has 3m instead of 6m 🤩
He will finish chemo before our wedding 😍🎉
Something very important happened today... I managed to find 4 folders that match the colour coding used for each of the 4 modules I will start this term 🙈🙊 (I have a stationery problem 😅).

One of those days where I randomly get overcome with emotion! I couldn't be more excited to start my

journey - feel so incredibly lucky to have this opportunity & the most amazing, supportive fiancé by my side. I couldn't do it without him 💕👫🏥💉💊
#WeStNs
This time last yr when we put the tree up we were between Robert's surgery & him starting chemo...
This yr we're putting our tree up as just the two of us for the last time 🤰👶🏻
So thankful for the life we have to look forward to ❤️
(He will not remove the turkey hat 🙃🤦🏻♀️)
Great day at the cricket. Smashing 6 in the final over by Morgan. Could not have handled 1 run per ball in the final over! Amazing game!!

Great first day in the Fracture Clinic! I had a cast put on & then taken off with the cast saw. Really valuable to experience this so I have a better idea of the patient's perspective! (definitely understand the fear of the saw 😅)

was announced 😱
All I'm wondering is if all those people who panic bought toilet rolls have actually used them all yet? 🤔🤷🏻♀️
One of the hardest shifts I've worked as a Student Nurse. A hugely reflective evening for me, a little cry in the car on the way home & a much needed cuddle from my Husband. Days like today remind me how lucky I am, and how lucky we are to have each other & our baby.
Excited to announce that I have joined the
@WeStudentNurse
