A year ago, the Pirates sent longtime pitching coach Dewey Robinson to LSU to scout Paul Skenes. His two-page scouting report ended simply:
"We’ve got to take this guy."
This is the story of Paul Skenes and the rise of a "one in a decade" pitcher.
Turns out they didn’t have any demands for a trade. They just wanted to meet Cutch and give him the ball.
Don’t worry. Of course Cutch hooked them up with some goodies.
Pirate fans Vinay and Toren Mehta caught Andrew McCutchen’s 300th home run ball. (Hit off Toren’s cap, Vinay got it on the rebound).
They didn’t know it was his 300th. Philly fans wanted them to throw it back. Instead, they get to meet Cutch.
Andrew McCutchen: “There were times I would drive by it [PNC Park] and I couldn’t even look at it because of the simple fact of knowing I can’t be here.”
Yeah, he’s happy he’s back.
Another round of personal news: Next week I start my new job as the Pittsburgh Pirates club reporter for MLB dot com.
I’m thrilled for the opportunity and can’t wait to share some of the stories I have planned. Stay tuned.

Asked new Pirate Isiah Kiner-Falefa about going from the Blue Jays to a playoff chase with the Pirates.
“I was coming back [from the IL] to try to win a batting title in the American League. So I think the mentality switches to winning a World Series now.”
Andrew McCutchen becomes just the 12th player in AL/NL history to record 400 doubles, 300 homers, 200 stolen bases and 50 triples in his career. Via

Termarr Johnson: “Pirates are getting the best player in the draft. And a ring.”
Ends his first media availability as a pro with a “let’s go Pittsburgh!”
This is such a cool little moment between two of the league’s best players, who have very engaging personalities, who happen to play in two of the league’s biggest markets...
...and it’s up to Rob to tweet it because MLB has no idea how to sell its product
On Friday:
Jared Jones will start for the Pirates.
Paul Skenes will start for Indianapolis.
Bubba Chandler will start for Altoona.
Pretty solid day of young pitching
Sources: Pirates are promoting RHP Braxton Ashcraft to AAA Indianapolis. Ashcraft, the team’s No. 6 prospect per
@MLBPipeline
, is coming off a 12 strikeout game and has a 1.89 ERA over his last six starts
Oneil Cruz, in his first game as a MLB player, has recorded the hardest hit baseball for the Pirates in the Statcast era. It was 118.2 mph. The previous record was Josh Bell/Gregory Polanco at 116.2 mph
Marcano was booed at Dodgers Stadium as he came up to bat because he homered yesterday. He homered on the first pitch to dead center. That's major league right there.
Sources: Top Pirates prospect Bubba Chandler is being promoted to Triple-A Indianapolis.
Chandler tossed seven innings of one run ball tonight for Altoona. He has pitched to a 2.61 ERA with 10.6 K/9 since the start of June.
Chandler is ranked as
@MLBPipeline
's No. 49 prospect.
3 Pirate thoughts:
1. I’ve never seen Ortiz that sharp. My goodness. Not just the results, but the conviction on those pitches
2. Almost every decision Shelton made paid off (Olivares PH HR, multi-IP Borucki, sticking w/ Ortiz in 11th)
3. Frame that Cruz HR swing in the Louvre
Last night, Isiah Kiner-Falefa told
@DanZangrilli
that he could see the Pirates winning 100 games in 2025. I asked postgame why he is so confident about this team moving forward:
Derek Shelton during his pregame availability, with no context: “We’re definitely aware of the furries. About a week ago, we were pretty close to going out there and buying a furry costume for someone to wear and walk around the city with it.”
Asked Duane Underwood Jr about measuring up to a team like the Padres. Started his answer by addressing the elephant in the room:
"As a team, they’ve got a lot of veterans, got a lot of money on that team. Us as a team, not really funded or paid. We don't have a lot of veterans."
David Bednar was booed after blowing the save Tuesday. As media went to Bednar’s locker postgame, Rowdy Tellez went in front of us to make a statement:
Paul Skenes is the first Pirate pitcher to record 7+ strikeouts in eight consecutive starts.
His MLB career is 11 starts old.
He's pitched only three innings so far today.
State of the Pirates: since the All-Star game, Pirate starting pitchers have more hitting WAR than Pirate position players (0.1 to -0.3), and Pirate position players have more pitching WAR than Pirate starting pitchers (-0.1 to -0.2).
Some personal news:
Today is my last day at DK Pittsburgh Sports. I want to thank everyone who read and followed my coverage these last 4+ years, and to Dejan and Dali for giving me my break in the industry.
I wrote this for our readers as a thank you:
This has been the finest baseball game the Pirates have played all year. They hit. They pitched. They fielded. Just an all around outstanding game for the home team.
Jared Jones got 22 whiffs today. That is the most for any pitcher in their MLB debut since at least 2009.

Source: Pirates are promoting Ji Hwan Bae from Triple-A Indianapolis. He was hitting .376 with seven stolen bases and a 1.048 OPS there.

was on it
The Pirates and Bryan Reynolds have come to terms on a two-year contract to avoid arbitration, per source. Reynolds will receive $6.75 million both in 2022 and 2023.
Mitch Keller is just the fourth Pirate since 2000 to win 10 games before the All-Star break. The others:
Gerrit Cole 2015
A.J. Burnett 2012
Kevin Correia 2011
The Pirates have hired Caitlyn Callahan as a development coach. She is the first in-uniform female coach in franchise history, per team source.
She interned w/ Reds the past 2 seasons. Has a degree in kinesiology and played 4+ years of softball at Boston University and St. Mary's
Source tells me Jared Jones and Joshua Palacios are going to start rehab assignments with Triple-A Indianapolis.
The expectation right now is Jones will start Thursday.
Hitters in the Statcast era with multiple career base hits of 118+ mph:
Giancarlo Stanton (41)
Aaron Judge (11)
Pete Alonso (3)
Shohei Ohtani (3)
Vladimir Guerrero Jr. (3)
Oneil Cruz (2)
Cruz is appearing in his 39th career MLB game
Yoshitomo Tsutsugo, on the field at Dodger Stadium, sharing a concern he had about coming to the Pirates:
“Do they have Chipotle in Pittsburgh?”
When he was told we do: “I’ll be fine.”
Asked Henry Davis if that was the best he's seen Jared Jones: "Probably. It was close. Not something I didn't expect, but yeah, it was pretty good."
Later in the interview on the future of this rotation, he said, beaming: "It's an exciting time. It's a good time to be a Pirate."
Back in June, Cherington told me that the Pirates would "spend every dollar" they could in this draft.
They literally -- I cannot stress this more, *LITERALLY* -- spent every single dollar they could without losing a first rounder next year.
Remember this draft class.
Source confirms the Pirates are calling up Henry Davis. He had a 1.078 OPS and seven home runs with Indy this past month, with Derek Shelton sharing recently that he had been making progress with his mechanics.
@JMackeyPG
had it first
Last year's Pirates team would have found about 10 ways to lose this game. A blown save because of an error. Keller shaky to start. Game coming down to a hitter who was 0-for-4.
This year's team found a way to win it.
This is one of my favorite

stats this year.
Joe Musgrove made his debut on 5/25. His stats: 6.17 IP per start, 3.41 ERA, 1.22 WHIP, 2.9 K/BB, .301 xwOBA, 32.3 Hard Hit%
Gerrit Cole since 5/25: 6.14 IP per start, 3.45 ERA, 1.12 WHIP, 3.2 K/BB, .315 xwOBA, 32.2 Hard Hit%
10 years ago, the Pirates snapped a 20-year losing streak, culminating in a do-or-die Wild Card that is the greatest game in PNC Park's history.
From the relay in Chicago to the blackout, this is the oral history of that team and that night.
Read it here:
Seven shutout frames for Luis Ortiz, who screams something into his glove as Michael A. Taylor tracks the final fly ball of the inning. Young man is amped up.
He has to be part of this rotation moving forward. He has to.
