There's taking advantage of the pandemic, and then there's this absolute legend of a child getting the majority of the front row of a G1 Climax block finals at Sumo Hall for himself and his stuffed pig.
1. WWE is endangering their staff
2. WWE is endangering their staff's families
3. WWE is endangering the general public
4. WWE is allowing morons to see them producing live shows and think "well if WWE are doing this I guess it's ok for me an my 12 mates to get together too"
AEW commentary addressing and putting over Daniel Garcia's work on the indies in the days leading up to Dynamite was so refreshing. Another sign of how AEW canon essentially is pro wrestling canon. If it happened, it happened. Japanese wrestling has always been that way too.
Personally I'm all for Keith Lee at 37 years old going a little more towards power moves and being a big man and holding back on the flying/movement compared to what he was doing at 32 years of age on the indies.
I don't see how this is a bad thing at all.
Listening to Jungle Boy talking to Renee, and hearing him enthusiastically talk about how Christian is helping him understand match layout, the little things etc is so exciting. He admits he just hadn't been exposed to that, and his mentality was 100% moves, creativity etc.
this was my favourite part of his performance. A little thing that nobody else does. He obviously thinks about things very differently than the majority.
This is AEW, so Jade ripping up a Dark Order t-shirt in a merch plug is probably going to be called back to in 6 months when Anna Jay gets back and it will rule.
Matt Sydal doing for Dante Martin what he did for Will Ospreay in 2015. The man absolutely knows how to make a young flyer look great. Takes one to know one I guess.
AEW's Japanese commentary existing so that Shingo can modestly & unintentionally educate people that he's been one of the best in the world for 17 years, is my favourite new development in wrestling.
this bump will grab the headlines, but pretty much every bump/sell of Hayter's in this match was above & beyond the call of duty.
She is an excellent pro wrestler and hopefully gets a big push that matches that at some point.
God, Bryan Danielson is such a breath of fresh air in these press conference situations. He can't help but be interesting. He even makes ad questions worthwhile. The one moment he tried to keep kayfabe with the Takeshita thing, he started laughing. The man has no poker face.
This is one of those things that I assume people know, but really a lot of people probably don't so please be aware....
MINORU SUZUKI WAS KING IN TEKKEN
Tanahashi and Muto having a sit on the ramp together after the two young lads went hell for leather in the finishing stretch was my fave moment of the NOAH/NJPW show. So great!
Former NXT champ Adam Cole stormed out of an interview with Pat McAfee today.
While it’s unclear if this was a work or not, Cole dropped multiple f-bombs during the blowup.
Everyone doing Bret moves tonight but not a single spinning heel kick, gut wrench suplex or career threatening enzuigiri. Where is the Owen love lads??
They don't get more honest than Paul Bearer. Remember what he says here when you see the WWE tributes to Howard.
Vince and his cronies bullied the hell out one of the nicest guys to ever work in that company.
Imagine feeling you just HAD TO use Paul Robinson on your show.....
It's like having a performance centre with 100+ amazing talented wrestlers and thinking you just HAVE TO keep Velveteen Dream.
Or wanting to go practice flips, and just HAVING TO use Chasyn Rance's gym.
Hearing about Yoshihiro Takayama doing rehab using balance balls and squats assisted by his trainers is just the kind of tonic that's nice for today. I really didn't know he had made that kind of progress.
Brodie was so giddy getting to work with Takayama. Their chemistry in this match was awesome. You could tell that Takayama was super impressed because he gave Brodie a ton as the match went on.
The build to All In probably rules. Unfortunately it only exists in TK's head currently but when he talks us through it all in relentless detail during the post show presser after Wembley, it will sound great. Wish I could have something to look forward to a month out though.
Fucking hell MJF and his hold the mic up desperately to get a shit unfunny chant over makes me never want to watch wrestling again out of pure mortification. It's pray that someone doesn't walk into the room level entertainment.
I asked
@TonyKhan
if he could find it and despite his unlimited resources, he wasn't able.
So he said "Alan lad, I'll just book it myself?" and I said "Tony you know what? You're a real swell guy."
It's sad seeing how WWE can beat guys down into not knowing their own worth.
Pillman's rise came about because he knew he DESERVED better. He knew he deserved Luger money as he called it. So he sat with Kim Wood in his kitchen and put his plan together.
That’s the thing, in this industry nothing is ever “deserved” it’s all earned. It’s about putting in the work to succeed. I’ve just got to put in more work is all.
And that’s okay, this is where I thrive!
#OAO
DUIs bothers me a lot. Repeated DUI's however bother me on a really visceral level, more than most things. When it's 20 years of these issues, why would anyone expect "oh THIS time it will be different". It probably won't, and the person is an established danger to society.
If I was laying out Dynamite tonight, I'm not sure I could go any other direction than have the World Champion open the show, following his incredible performance last week, and mic in hand cut a fired up promo about how he's THE CHAMP, he's AEW and he's not going anywhere!
If AEW do a World Title Eliminator Tournament this year again finishing at Full Gear, imagine how insanely loaded that could be, and how much fun it would be to guess the brackets.
WHY DOES HE INSIST ON TALKING ABOUT THE WAY BRET HART "TAKES" A TURNBUCKLE BUMP EVERY FUCKING WEEK ON COMMENTARY!!!
Am I missing any way that makes any sense in kayfabe at all?
You'd think for a guy who shits on most modern stuff, he'd care about keeping kayfabe on commentary.
in 2009 after the first DG-UK show, PAC took out the whole roster and management for dinner and paid for everything. I highly doubt he was rolling in money at that point. But he did it because he felt indebted to them for taking care of him in Japan for 2 years.
Trent getting neck fusion surgery is sad news.
But if ever there was an argument for why having a second strong national company is important, it's seeing a guy like him who's worked hard for years getting taken care of when he's in need.
Hopefully he has a good recovery.
NJPW back on their old primetime TV slot. This is absolutely huge.
No matter how much people talk about NJPW "cooling off" or "past it's peak", or even back in 2015 I remember talk that THEY DIDN'T HAVE THEIR NEXT STARS..... they just keep raising the ceiling of their success
Terry was one of the few people involved in men's wrestling in Japan in the 80s who said that All Japan Women were the real deal and to be taken seriously. He thought they were innovators and would be proven as such, which they were in the 90s.
Imagine how fucking great the first New Japan show will be when those guys get let loose again. You know guys like Shingo, Hiromu, Ibushi and Ospreay are just chomping at the bit.
Chastising your fanbase publically is always a terrible move even if you feel 100% justified. It will only serve to make you look like an overly gotten to simpleton.
Focus on entertaining your fans, enticing people to pay money for your product and shutting the fuck up.
I hope nobody is surprised by this. A leopard doesn't change it's spots.
WWE may employ (and associate with) a lot of nice, well meaning people nowadays but the machine is still as harsh as ever and they will cut your throat for absolutely nothing if they feel like it.
You know how WWE love to brand each different "era", I feel like the most apt term right now is the "PR Era". It's all about perception & grand-standing. It's smart no doubt. But for me as a fan of 26 years, it's so hollow and transparent. I just wanna watch some wrestling.
You know how I know Omega didn't know about Rance's arrest? Because if he did know,HE WOULDN'T HAVE HAD HIM ON HIS FUCKING SHOW. Do you think he's absolutely brain dead or something? With as much as that show obviously meant to Kenny do you really think he'd have done that? C'mon
It's wild to me that so many indies are needing all the support they can get coming out of a pandemic & still find it impossible to put their upcoming card in one place for potential customers to see
I DO NOT WANT TO SCROLL DOWN YOUR TIMELINE FOR 25 MINUTES TO PIECE IT TOGETHER!
RIP Jim Crockett Jr.
Such an integral part in the foundations of professional wrestling. He leaves behind an amazing legacy, and one that has been felt in multiple segment on AEW tonight.
Jericho, at his age, or any age, holding this hold for as long as he has is seriously impressive. He's basically been doing a deep wall squat for 5 minutes.
I'm so happy with Danielson mixing up his finishes. My biggest issue with his WWE work was how patterned and formulaic he became. Now he's just going with what works for the situation and it's awesome. And that was one of the best Busaiku Knee Strike's he's ever hit.
Ohhhh GOD..... I just realised.....
poor Drew McIntyre!!!
What an absolute punch in the gut.
I know a lot of people have it a lot worse that him, but stillll.... that's an ouch.
I feel like Takeshita is the first example of a great Japanese wrestler being dropped into a mostly well meaning mainstream TV US promotion for a proper run since.... Tanaka in 98 ECW or Muto in 89 NWA...
It's already really fun seeing people in AEW head over heels for him.
Sarah and I had a bonding moment this evening where we both noted that when we were small we thought Razor Ramon's gear was covered in little cheeses.
I had no logic for my 8 year old mindset at the time but she did. She thought it was because of his "Ma-cheese-mo"
Sammy G: "People should stop badgering me about my personal life"
Me: "I really do not want to know about Sammy's personal life. Like not at all. Ever. I'd rather learn about whether it's raining in Helsinki right now"
Sammy G: "HERE'S MY PERSONAL LIFE!!! AND HERE IT IS AGAIN!"
I hope Shinsuke can do something as a heel because the one thing he had left was "big stage performer" & that match was straight out of G1 Night 7 in Shizuoka against Togi Makabe. I watched it so intently to see exactly what they'd do and was shocked at how uninspired it was.
Jay White is going to end up a shining example of sometimes a guy just needs fresh scenery. He was brilliant in about a dozen different ways in his segment. I was as bored by Jay as anyone in NJPW, but he stands out as a cut above most to me in AEW.
I want to tell you all a story.
I'm sure many of you have heard about the origins of Dwayne "DJ" Johnson's distaste for one Michael Shawn Hickenbottom.
Reading this, and blown away by how Jay was clearly a centrepiece of his community. Had no idea how big his presence was there. I truly hope all the work and love he gave to the people in the area will come back ten-fold to his family in the coming years.
Something I love about AEW booking. They set you up thinking you're getting some cliche swerve i.e. BCC weren't the ones who attacked Elite, or Callis is aligned with BCC.... and then they hit you with something you absolutely didn't expect which is a million times better.
Do you all realise how lucky we are to share the same lifetime as Jushin Thunder Liger? Think of all the people in the history of the world that didn't get that chance. Sure maybe they shared the earth with Ghandi or Shakespeare but neither of those guys are JACKED LIKE JUSHIN!
In fact, most of the 80s territorial scene was like that, 80s/90s European wrestling was like that, ECW was like that, WCW was like that.
There's really only been one place that felt the need to act like the world is just them.
AEW performers, I will be watching you closely over the next few days. Give me your best tennis puns and references on the shows and you will be in my goodest books.
My enjoyment Hingis on this.
That was outstanding. One of the best Dynamite mains ever.
Total career week for FTR. Feels like they are 10 times the stars they were a month ago. They've really stepped it up.
If Danielson still goes to Florida every week with his immunodeficiency and his pregnant wife at home, I'm going to start to think they have him blackmailed or under mind control or something.
Like why on earth would he do that??? It's insane given his public stance on things.
This is the late great Atsushi Aoki, at the time only 3 years into his career. Despite his lack of experience, Aoki was a natural and was a great opponent for
@bryandanielson
every time they shared the ring.
Look up Aoki's work. He was so great, and is sorely missed.
NOAH is such a pile of shit. It's amazing to think how much they've torpedo'd their own promotion in literally 3 months. Remember how much good vibes they had in January when the roster, lead by Kenoh, walked into the Tokyo Dome?
After a good night's sleep, it's as clear to me as it was in the moment that Devlin vs Starr was one of the best matches I've ever seen. The atmosphere was indescribable. The pair of them were wrestling out of their skin, physically, mentally and emotionally. Men possessed.
I genuinely feel sorry for the big lad. He's now behind the 8 ball from the jump. Very unfair to put him in that spot. Based on the limited physicality he's clearly a mile away from being ready.
You can sense he's starting to understand wrestling on a different level now and it's so exciting to him. He's not going to get away from doing cool stuff as that is important to him but he can now complement it so much more.
Very sad to hear about the passing of "The All Around Best" Xavier (I loved that nickname). He was such a talented guy and his matches with Paul London & Jay Briscoe may well be the most underrated matches in early
@ringofhonor
history. RIP
I feel so genuinely bad for the good people left in ROH. Ian, Cabana, Gresham, Cobb and others. They were let down hard by their company last night. On a show where they could have really got things rolling, they made it so I never want to watch their product again. It's sad.
every year I think about this at least once and every year it gets more amazing that it was a thing that actually happened. I know everyone involved has said how much they regretted it (oddly with the exception of Jay haha).
I'm not sure people properly realise how freakishly good Colten Gunn is for his experience level. He's had 105 matches and his first year was during the peak of the pandemic. He has no right to be this good. His movements are as natural as they come.
This is amazing.
Animal Hamaguchi's gym was the starting point for so many great pro wrestling careers.
Shingo Takagi is the fourth disciple to win the IWGP Heavyweight Title, following Kojima, Naito and EVIL.
Two Triple Crown champs too (Kojima and Omori).
There was that time when they made a deal to do shows in a country with horrific human rights issues run by a murderous dictatorship who wouldn't let you in because of your race.
I mean that would have really hurt your positioning in the rankings.
I am making a documentary exposing the conspiracy by
@WWE
against me.
It’s clear there was a coordinated effort to oust me as Intercontinental Champion.
Since wrestling fans have great memories, can you think of instances where WWE stacked the deck against me over the years?
Remember a few years ago when the biggest local government issue effecting WrestleMania weekend was whether or not the lads could do some piledrivers. Ahhh simpler times.
I want to die from second hand embarrassment. Just was out for a walk and heard the Tesco delivery man *I think* flirting with two of my neighbours which included the following exchange:
"Where are you from girls?"
"Italy"
"Ah Italia! SPAGHETTI BOLOGNESE!"
Yes he did the accent
Jay White becoming an elite snappy US TV worker with 99% of his experience being in Japan working long drawn out matches (for the most part) is really quite a testament to what a natural wrestler he is.
If I'm going to criticise, I'm certainly going to give praise when there's an immediate course correction. I mean that's what you're looking for when you give constructive criticism or simply vent on something like I did below (1/2)
Fucking hell MJF and his hold the mic up desperately to get a shit unfunny chant over makes me never want to watch wrestling again out of pure mortification. It's pray that someone doesn't walk into the room level entertainment.
