There are unfortunately a lot of misconceptions in this video by
@ZyoniK_
(no hate to him). I'm a Wayfarer Ambassdor (an unpaid volunteer, NOT an employee) and I helped Niantic create the new Wayfarer anti-abuse policies, so let's clear up some of these misconceptions: A thread🧵
It's time to put these rumors and lies to bed. Niantic does not ban "innocent" Wayfarers. This is an example of Niantic appropriately banning someone for repeated fake submissions and abuse of Wayfarer, and in this thread, I'll be sharing the receipts. A thread: 🧵
@chuggaaconroy
@C0nvoBreaker
You don't need to sue them nor will this be expensive. You just need a lawyer to send a letter to Sony's legal department showing that you have written permission and you will pursue legal action if they don't resolve it. The moment their real lawyers look at that, this will end.
And that's the 25 tweet limit for a Twitter thread. Again, no hate to ZyoniK. Thanks to anyone who took the time to read, and sorry for the delay. I'll be happy to answer further questions from anyone who isn't unnessecarilly rude. Cheers.
@ZyoniK_
Hello, I'm one of the Wayfarer Ambassadors. I helped Niantic design the anti-abuse system for Wayfarer. There is a large amount of incorrect assumptions and misinformation in this video. I'd love to chat with you about it sometime to clear that up. Feel free to reach out.
@Chaos173
@miogami_
@NintendoAmerica
The people who are interested enough in Splatoon to watch the tournament were probably going to buy Octo Expansion regardless
@ingress
Making agents stand around for 3+ minutes at a time to hack portals goes entirely against the philosophy of Niantic games that want you to keep moving and exploring. All this does is slow down gameplay and add frustration. Horrible change.
@NISAmerica
I just discovered Danganronpa thanks to a streamer, and thanks to this policy I now won't support you by buying the games myself. Bad move.
@mov_MarioPaper
Hey just curious about this so called "hate group" of people who supposedly weren't ever friends with stryder and didn't really know him at all: Why is it that stryder described us as his closest and oldest friends in his first ever message in this group?
I think we can all agree that spoofers should be banned when they fake their location to bring themselves to the Pokestops. Participating in Wayfarer abuse to bring fake Pokestops to yourself is really no different. There's no reason they shouldn't be punished similarly.
It is extremely important that you as a community stop letting liars, cheaters, fear mongering Youtubers, and perpetual Niantic haters mislead you into believing that Wayfarer will ban you for no reason. There are plenty of fair reasons to dislike Niantic. This isn't one of them.
Full disclosure: Ambassadors have regular meetings/convos with Niantic to give feedback, escalate issues, and test/refine new features. We see privileged information, and I'm under an NDA as a result. I'm NOT forced to say good things about Niantic.
The Wayfarer team has updated the emails that they send to users who are punished per the Wayfarer Abuse ladder. Emails should now contain a more specific reason for the punishment, as well as an example. In the case below, the user was submitting a bunch of street lamps.
@NianticHelp
Horrible decision.
Remember when you made Gen 2 evo items a gaurenteed reward from a 7 day spin streak to help curb bad RNG? You've recreated a problem that you had already solved almost two years ago, and the sinnoh stone already solved the issue of getting the wrong item. Bad.
@theverybest5000
How about a tweet with receipts?
1st pic: a trail marker being faked.
2nd pic: shows where it actually belongs (in the duplicate check)
3rd and 4th pics are additional fakes at the same address.
You can see the ones titled "pilgrimsleden" being rejected in OPs email.
I will forever remember submitting this Wayspot because of the stupidly long amount of time I spent waiting to get the "perfect picture" of the water bucket dumping out, while also avoiding having any people visible in the photo. In the end, it was worth it 😅
I escalated this to Niantic and upon looking at the appeal, Niantic has reversed this ban. There is a lot of history that led to this case, and I will try to explain more soon, when I can. The appeals system is fast and fair and innocent players need not worry about unjust bans.
Hi everyone!
Wanted to thank everyone who liked/retweeted my post, it helped a lot and
I GOT UNBANNED.
I never used 3rd party photos like they wrote though, but it's not important now, I'm just happy to have my account back
At the end of the day, the majority of players are utilizing Wayfarer without issue, because they are simply following the criteria. There are a ton of misconceptions about what is eligible. You can read the criteria here, I bet you'll learn something new:
Here is PoGo content creator
@pokeAK101
when there is an opportunity to create quality, educational Wayfarer content, VS
@pokeAK101
when there is a chance to profit off of "brain dead clickbait drama".
The problem is, his tweet actually has some truth to it. A short thread: 🧵
The senior vice president of marketing at
@BethesdaStudios
doesn't understand the concepts of customers, resale, individual sellers, or middlemen. Absolutely amazing and mind boggling. Bethesda if you need someone that at least has basically knowledge of these things let me know.
@tohmowata
K. You can believe what you want. People who buy our games are out customers no matter where they buy it. It’s our product. It’s our responsibility.
@ZyoniK_
To everyone in my replies saying I should share this publicly: I'm happy to, but refuting almost every second of a 10 minute long video on twitter where I am limited to 240 character responses isn't efficient. You all will need to wait until later today when I have time for that.
The policy is mainly to focus on high-impact abuse types, such as botting, voting rings, wayspot clustering, harassment, etc. The average good-intentioned player is unlikely to be impacted by this policy if they are following Niantic's criteria. These edge cases are not the norm.
My take on speedrunners "responsibility" to submit thier runs to leaderboards:
People should be highly encouraged to submit their runs but it shouldn't be required.
Leaderboard mods should be filling in the gaps when someone doesn't submit their own run.
Punishments related to Pokemon Go Routes and Wayfarer abuse are not connected. The Pokemon Go team handles Routes. The Wayfarer team handles Wayfarer. Route punishments may be similar, but they are not in the scope of Wayfarer. Anyways, lets continue:
The main issue is that most of the people abusing Wayfarer are only doing so for the Pokestops they gain in Pokemon Go. The two are inherently connected. People who abuse Wayfarer don't gain anything within Wayfarer for doing so. It all revolves around the individual games.
ZyoniK pointed to the fact that there is a lot of grey area in what is and isn't eligible, and this is very true, however, anyone who has attempted to report abuse before will tell you that as a result, it's often very difficult to get Niantic to actually take action on abuse.
Furthermore, greenbeev is located in the Netherlands, which recently was subject to a Wayfarer abuse botnet, where certain individuals were utilizing bots to accept basically any Wayfarer nomination that was submitted.
Earlier this year I got out of the habit of sharing Wayspots I got accepted - but I think it's time to change that.
Some of you may remember my submission series of art from my local airport. Earlier this year I finally went back to finish it - this one is one of my favorites.
At 4:19 Zyonik plays devil's advocate and claims someone could submit a picture of a Pokemon card as a Pokestop at their own house. This is actually a very common occurrence within Wayfarer and the abuse has gotten so bad, that horrible submissions like this often get accepted.
A key issue with Zyonik's video is the lack of reviewing the entire policy he was criticizing. The only part that was reviewed was a screenshot from one of the abuser's own tweets. Little effort was made to seek a better understanding or to fact-check the claims being made.
The video does a lot of fearmongering, claiming that if you interact with Wayfarer and submit even one thing against criteria that you can get banned instantly. Again this is not true, although a pattern of this might get you a warning or suspension.
We were essentially told that both the Wayfarer and Pokemon Go teams reviewed the situation, and that a suspension was deemed justified. We were given some additional details that I cannot share to quell our own skepticism. In my opinion, the suspension was fair.
There are some things/details that I cannot discuss, or am uncomfortable discussing. For this thread, that will mainly apply to some specific details of the punishment system. If publicized, this info would only help abusers avoid punishment and detection.
Now, let's get started:
@JreSeawolf
You can be upset with the truth, but Wayfarer is abundantly filled with terrible submissions that are mainly sourced back to PoGo players. Ingress players submit terrible nominations too, but their attitude towards POI density is very different. The truth isn't being "elitist".

#WayfarerChallengePart1
They admitted in one of their comments that these were submitted when "nominations were going fast", aka, when the abusive botnet was active. Perhaps malice was not intended, but its hard to know for sure without seeing all of the person's submissions.
ZyoniK then goes into the case of
@RunnningCat
's 30 day suspension, but he does not refute or even mention the content of the abuse in this case, which appears to have been a mix of "submitter identifiable" and "influencing reviewers" abuse types:
I have had my Pokémon GO account suspended for approximately 30 days since last week for violating Wayfarer's terms.
My statement is here.
Please note that I am using the translate tool, so sometimes it is not correct English🙏
(1/2)
ZyoniK then discusses why he believes punishments should be isolated to Wayfarer accounts. For many years that was the case and unfortunately it was incredibly unsuccessful at preventing abuse. A search for "abuse" on the Wayfarer forum will showcase this.
As stated in an underlined portion of the new punishment policy, "This policy may provide offenders with disciplinary actions proportional to the severity of the offenses they perform."
This is not the only case of this. Another user, again from the Netherlands, had a similar experience receiving a 30 day ban, and posted to Reddit. However this person then later admitted that they did in fact submit a number of ineligible nominations.
Having seen the inner workings of how the system works (which I can't disclose), and knowing that Niantic skipped past a warning, I can assure you this means that we are talking about a significant number of wayspots that were determined to be abuse - not just one, or even a few.
Look up!! A year ago I visited this park to submit some basic park stuff, and instead found a massive mural in the middle of being painted. Needless to say, I returned almost daily until it was completed so I could submit it!
We Wayfarer Ambassadors actually spoke with Niantic about the claims that Greenbeev made several weeks ago when his story started making the rounds on certain websites. We wanted to make sure that the claims of an unfair ban were not true.
@krbcan
@theverybest5000
Sorry but no. This is information that was taken from a public, although secluded, space on the internet. It is very important to show that the lies of a few bad intentioned trainers are in fact lies, and that innocent Wayfarers do not need to worry about wrongful bans.
These people abusing the system aren't doing "free labor". They cause Niantic *more* labor to clean up their mess, and they clog the system with things that shouldn't ever get accepted, and slow down the rate at which players have their legit submissions reviewed and accepted.
One of my all time favorite
@NianticWayfarer
submissions EVER just got accepted! Everything about it was a longshot, all my friends told me it was unlikely, and BOOM, first try! My love for roller coasters & theme parks really shines in this one. This is one for the hall of fame!
Instead, ZyoniK pivots to the part of the policy that abuse can be punished retroactively for up to a year, claiming that it is unfair. He also asserts at 3:35 that the system flags these nominations - This is untrue. These reports are community reported and reviewed by humans.
Keeping all of this in mind, remember that this person only received a 30 day suspension, not the more severe 90 day suspension or permanent ban. There is plenty of room for leeway and opportunities to stop abusing the system before an account gets banned for good.
Every member of the angry mob has blame in this, even though most will rightfully condemn it. You wanted to be heard and you were heard. You didn't get your way and you all kept going. This is what happens as a result. Prolonged anger does nothing but breed hate. Let it go.
I decided to block an account for the first time today.
I usually pride myself on never blocking anybody, even though some people say some pretty hurtful things about me. I genuinely think it’s important to read contradicting view points and not get trapped in an echo chamber.
Many people have said that it makes no sense to ban folks over grey area submissions. Those people are correct! The problem is Niantic *isn't* doing that. They're banning people over actual abuse and cheating. I am begging you to please open your eyes to truth and reason.
I've got a theme for the Wayspots I'm going to share this week: "Look up!"
This incredible art piece is built into the ceiling at my local airport, and could easily be missed if you didn't know to look for it. My photo doesn't quite do it justice, so here are some other POVs too!
Due to the nature of Wayfarer reviews, nominations often take months (or years) to get approved, and then the abuse still needs to be discovered, which can take additional months. It can also take time to establish a pattern of abuse in order to distinguish ignorance from malice.
ZyoniK's video starts by talking about the 30 day suspension of
@greenbeev
. Notably, ZyonkiK shows an example wayspot submitted by greenbeev that is a trail marker that he called a "route". Many people appear to be confusing this with Pokemon Go Routes.
I'm extremely disappointed to once again see the
@PokemonGoApp
community scapegoating disabled people to force another change. I know that such people will be impacted, but the extreme majority of people complaining are healthy players who only care about raiding from their home.
We are supporting the community once again with
#HearUsNiantic
. The recent raid changes announced by
@NianticLabs
for
@Pokemon
GO are nothing short of disastrous for the future of the game and the community.
Please read our letter and see .
Thank you.
@asheramichelle
You should not feel guilty at all, and no one was forced to read your story. People wanted to read your story because they support you, believe you, and stand beside you. It was HIS own actions, not yours, that led to the pain that some people now feel. That is not your fault.
I've said it before, and I'll say it again. You aren't going to get a ban for making 1 or 2 mistakes. A true mistake may get you a warning. You apparently won't even get a permanent ban for using two accounts to intentionally abuse Wayfarer repeatedly for years, as shown above.
The above are just the tip of the iceberg. Here are a few more nominations from the past that were submitted/reviewed at this location using the same photos, with attempted fake submissions going at least as far back as February 2022.
When reading this, please remember that
@Lankern89
may not know that the claims they made were false and misleading. While sharing this without fact checking was frankly irresponsible, they may have been decieved by their friend as well. No hate to this person.
Let's get started:
For those unaware, I'm a Wayfarer Ambassdor (an unpaid volunteer, NOT an employee). While I do have access to some confidential information and am under an NDA, the info in this thread was ENTIRELY sourced from public (although secluded) corners of the internet.
Most of these people telling lies about their accounts have nothing to lose, and everything to gain, and they are willing to decieve you and destroy the credibility of Wayfarer for a shot at getting their account back sooner. The community needs to be cognizant of this.
