Why is
@BBCNews
using a pristine file picture of Al Shifa Hospital to report Israeli army’s withdrawal and repeating Israel’s false claims of a ‘precision operation’? The horrific images of the actual scene reveal how shameful their ‘reporting’ is.
Short🧵on the appalling coverage by
@BBCNews
of Israel’s slaughter of Palestinian refugees sheltering in tents in a so-called ‘safe zone’ in Rafah.
1st they run a piece with the title ‘Deadly explosion reported in Rafah’ as if it happened out of nowhere.
Images have been updated but
@BBCNews
continues to regurgitate the Israeli army’s framing and narrative, and the piece is punctuated throughout with their spokespeople’s claims. The media has a role to play in preventing acts of genocide. This is what complicity looks like.
The total absence of outrage amongst mainstream British media and their complicity in allowing the destruction of the Palestinian people to continue has been writ large for us to see. Such morally bereft coverage will stand as a testament to this very dark moment in history.
“20 yrs from now, when it is far too late for journalism to make any difference, someone will win a Pulitzer for telling the truth about this moment.” Blistering article by Arwa Mahdawi that applies to the Guardian’s own coverage as much as US media
This little snapshot of
@BBCNews
gives an insight into how it provides cover for Israel’s genocidal assault on the Palestinian people & is playing a role in allowing it to continue. Over 100,000 Palestinians in Gaza have been killed or injured by Israel in the last 8 months.
Next they provide a justifying framing for Israel’s horrific attack, referring to a ‘precise air strike’, with a full 15 paragraphs before any mention of the ICJ’s ruling that Israel must halt its offensive on Rafah.
Then a piece titled ‘Deadly strike on Rafah a tragic mishap, says Netanyahu’, parroting his blatantly implausible response to growing international condemnation, with zero analysis & no mention that the International Criminal Court prosecutor is seeking a warrant for his arrest.
A visual aid for broadcasters who still insist when they interview Palestinians that the Israeli Defence Minister’s Yoav Gallant’s pledge “Gaza won’t return to what it was before. We will eliminate everything” is about Hamas. This is a genocidal campaign.
And this morning an article reporting as fact that ‘Israeli officials had spent much of Monday scrambling to find out what went wrong in Rafah’, while promoting trust in the promise of a ‘thorough investigation’ by Israel’s top military officials.
Only Israeli minors are "children"
Palestinian minors are "people aged 18 & younger"
This is NOT a mistake; it's a premeditated carefully worded editorial decision!
Dehumanization is the root of all cruelty, & Western media has been at the forefront of it since Oct 7!

Everyone who’s refused to speak out against the atrocities Israel is enacting against the Palestinian people, everyone who’s refused to call for an immediate ceasefire, or has suggested the siege on Gaza is in any way justifiable, is responsible for what happens now
Shocking to think children in Palestine are still being killed 20 years after Tom Hurndall was shot in the head while trying to rescue a child. Thinking of the Hurndall family today and of the families of all the children who have been killed by Israeli forces over the years.
20 years ago today, Tom Hurndall was shot in the head while trying to rescue a small child in Gaza. He lay in a coma until his passing on 13 January 2004. Tom was a brave humanitarian and is an enduring inspiration for us, as is his mother

Scrolling over this is so painful. The first 88 names are from the same family! The next 72 from one family! And the undescribable pain goes on. No words.
‘Clashes’: the mainstream media’s language guide on Israel totally skews the news. How can anyone depict Israeli police brutally beating Muslim worshippers with batons this way? Such attacks will continue with impunity without responsible reporting.

Britain’s untrammelled support for Israel’s colonial violence and apartheid regime as it bombs the people of Gaza, razing residential buildings and wipes out entire families, couldn’t shine more clear.
Whatever Israel does, including bombing refugees in tents, it can rely on
@BBCNews
to provide a justifying framing for its genocidal acts. A full 15 paragraphs before any mention of the ICJ’s ruling that Israel must halt its offensive on Rafah.
Boosting a party whose leader aided & abetted Israel’s genocidal assault on Palestinians by refusing to call for a permanent ceasefire & claiming Israel had a right to withhold power & water from Gaza’s population - which is collective punishment and a war crime - beggars belief.

? Or will the UK gov still supply arms for Israel to continue its slaughter of Palestinians and massive destruction of civilian infrastructure in Gaza while you call for a ‘sustainable ceasefire’?

The Nicaraguan government has started proceedings to take Britain, Germany, the Netherlands, and Canada to the International Court of Justice (ICJ) for their complicity in the genocide against the Palestinian people.
Yes. The UN has “used and checked Gaza health ministry data for years.” Such attempts to undermine the figures in the mainstream media are aiding and abetting Israel to continue killing hundreds of Palestinians every day.
Since I wrote this piece 5 years ago the UK government has stepped up its highly regressive approach towards platforms in which Palestinians might have a meaningful opportunity to convey their lives experience and assert their rights.
Ministry of Health in Gaza has reported 52 people killed, including 6 children, and 2,410 casualties, including 203 children. As many as 1,204 have been injured by live ammunition, 13 by Rubber-coated metal bullets, 133 by shrapnel. 837 of injured suffered tear gas inhalation
Al Awda hospital in north Gaza just told the MAP team that they have received 85 casualties, including 20 children. All 4 theatres are engaged, working on orthopaedic cases. Al Awda is a relatively small hospital, doing an amazing job handling so many casualties at once.
Israel has killed 10,000 Palestinians, including 4,000 children in just 4 weeks, held its 2.2m population under siege for over 16 yrs & a brutal colonial & apartheid regime for decades but
@guardian
still leads with Israel’s ‘security’ narrative. Dehumanisation in action.
