What people THINK it's like owning an indie games company: 1. Spend all day working on your game. 2. Put it up on the store and watch the money come in. Here's what's actually occupied my time for the last few weeks:

The definition of an indie game developer is someone who says "This will definitely just take 3-6 months" and then spending 2-3 years on it instead, forever until you die

Something I wished more gamers and indie game fans realized right now: A lot of the people who made your favorite games are honestly struggling to survive and keep making games in 2019.

This is such a bizarre thing to take away from their employees. It costs them virtually nothing to provide, and encourages them to actively participate (from a consumer point of view!) in the ecosystem they're helping to develop.

Funny story. I implemented this EXACT thing when I was a junior at Raven, for the X-Men legends II game, for the exact reason Delaney mentions - running against walls. The team hated it, and after days of arguing about it my lead made me remove it.

Quick #Gamedev tip: drive the animation by a character's current speed rather than input speed or control stick magnitude. What this means is characters do not play their run animation loops when pushing into an obstacle like a wall.

This whole thread is interesting, but I think this tweet gets at the key issue: Unity as a software organization has made a series of choices that have got them in a spot where charging professional devs $150 per month per seat isn't enough to sustain their army of engineers.

There's a variation on this that's a fun exercise in psychology. A short 🧵: You're making a console game where your bug can walk on the walls and ceilings. Player pushes the stick up, here's what's on screen. Obviously, you want the bug to towards the wall:

As an indie dev with a game on GOG, this is extremely upsetting. I can't think of a worse message to send to gamers than to tell them they can get games literally cancelled from their store if they complain enough. This is setting a terrible precedent and perpetuating toxicity.

Ok I probably shouldn't tempt myself like this, but is this a mashup you'd like to see? If I get 200 likes on this tweet, I will drop everything I'm doing and spend a few days making a StarFox-inspired prototype with the Race The Sun engine.

I bought an old house a few years back and we tore the walls apart to convert a bathroom into a closet, and there were hundreds of razor blazes just sitting there between one of the walls. Who decided this was normal lol

Hotels used to have slots in the wall for disposing of razor blades and people were like “where do they go??” and the answer was “in the wall”

Yesterday I learned that in Finland, you can get a $100k speeding ticket if you're really rich. Also top earners pay 65% income tax. Yet the country has lots of millionaires (almost 2% of the population). You can tax the heck out of the rich and they won't flee your country.

Someone made a lengthy negative review of our game, Whisker Squadron: Survivor, 3 days after our E.A. launch last August, saying we didn't understand how to make roguelites. They were... Not entirely wrong! It's our first roguelike/roguelite game. Here's what I've learned since:

One thing I've learned is that a lot of gamers have very strong, very misguided beliefs about what "accessibility" means. I'm still learning about this myself! But somehow, some players got this ridiculous idea that accessibility options aren't allowed to affect game difficulty.

We just sent out beta access Steam keys to all of our Kickstarter backers for Whisker Squadron: Survivor! The game is still wrapping up, but we're looking forward to getting lots of feedback from our earliest supporters 😺

Y'kno, if all us Unity devs paying hundreds of dollars in monthly subscription fees instead put that into a Godot development fund that was 100% spent on actually improving the engine for game developers, I bet we'd have a pretty sweet Unity alternative in short order.

But I think the thing that impresses me more is that this design direction got greenlit at all. The Zelda series has always been super tight, with carefully designed puzzled that can be mostly solved in one way. The way they just decided to upend all of that is bonkers.

In the 2nd Shrine, the game hinted that I should learn about Fusing objects in my inventory to solve a puzzle. Instead, I glued 3 rocks together and climbed them to get over a barrier. And the game is just like "cool".

If there’s one thing I’ve picked up from twitter gamedev discourse this past week, it’s that different groups have VERY different ideas about game content creation and paid content:
