For 5 years I had my social media monitored by university management and was regularly threatened for content they didn't like. So there is a free speech issue in universities but it's not the one the government thinks it is.

I wrote 30 Christmas cards for my immediate (new) neighbours this year to try to build some new connections (which I find terrifying). I got 9 back, 2 knocks on the door, 1 box of shortbread, and a call to come hang out and meet everyone. I think that's a pretty good outcome.

We've just been notified today at UCL that "We have therefore taken the decision to move all teaching and face-to-face, in-person activities online". So if your university hasn't done that yet, tell them there's a clear precedent.

I know it's just something little, but my colleague @j_w_baker and I had a little email celebration this morning because @ProgHist sent out it's first ever employee paycheck today, and that felt like such an achievement for us as a project and #digitalHumanities as a field.

There is no longer a reason to justify putting a human on an airplane to go look at a document. We need to stop funding international archive trips except in the most peculiar of cases where digitisation doesn't meet the requirements for genuine reasons.

I should fulfill my own request. I'm working on classifying 22,000 dishes served to George III in the 1790s, so that we can trace the ways foreign knowledge became part of British culture and sculpted the very meaning of Britishness.

We need to normalize pre-review prints in digital humanities and historical studies research. I have papers that have been sitting in peer review for a year providing no one any value. It's a frustrating system that doesn't need to be this way.

Today 5 colleagues and I are reading and providing feedback on each other's papers. No budget, no fanfare. Not going on our CV. No (significant) carbon footprint. And the result is better research. I'd recommend it as an alternative to the conference. Happy to share how we do it

I've had a paper in peer review for a year now. According to the editor 5 people have promised and then not followed through with the review. I understand life is difficult, but please say NO to things you cannot actually do right now. It's a much better option for everyone.

Invisible when you first enter academic job market, is that so many jobs go to people making lateral and sometimes downward career moves. You aren't just against other PhD students for posts. You're up against senior lecturers trying to escape failing depts or abusive managers

I'm concerned with what looks like a belief that A-level testing USED TO be fair but wasn't this year. It was never a fair or good system and has always been open to privilege and gaming. There are lots of other ways.

When you start studying the history of #DigitalHumanities it becomes clear that the people who want to push the envelope get bored quickly and won't sustain their innovations. So they need to be forced to partner with the people who will keep projects alive for the long term
