It's not advisable to go mushrooming in Abney Park. Edible plants are likely to be infused with arsenic, from the bodies embalmed in the Victorian era. Mushrooms are also likely to be full of lead because of the lead-lined coffins used by Victorians. #Abney180

John Jay (1805-72) has one of the most ornate monuments in Abney, described as ‘a rich baroque sarcophagus of stone with curved belly, mounted on four lion’s paws and elaborately carved in relief’. It is said that this was almost certainly carved by the man himself. #Abney180

Every Thursday of the summer holidays (from the 29th July) we are teaming up with author @LouieStowell to put on an adventure workshop for kids, ""Otherland"". Based on Stowell's new book, you will run, jump, search and find. But don't stray from the paths that wind.

Then & Now: Abney House (1700-1843). The surviving iron gateway is the Church Street entrance to Abney Park Cemetery. Home of the Lord of the Manor of Stoke Newington Sir Thomas and his wife Lady Mary Abney. Sir Thomas co-founded the Bank of England, and was Lord Mayor of London.
