This is a terrible and sudden loss and we send our condolences to Nick’s loved ones.
He was a massive influence on the park’s now complete restoration plans and his work on the Women of Abney fim is just one brilliant part of a legacy of work.
Thank you and RIP Nick Perry.
On October 1st, we very sadly and unexpectedly lost a tireless champion of heritage conservation and a remarkable force in Hackney. Nick Perry (
@realnickperry
), a powerhouse whose dedication to preserving heritage and promoting local history left a lasting mark on the borough,
It is with great pride that we preserve the resting place of Joanna Vassa, daughter of Abolitionist Olaudah Equiano. Her monument is pictured here. You can read more about her history here:
Today one of our Trust Coordinators, Zach, leaves after nearly two years with us.
Thank you for all your work on events, volunteering, comms, lockdowns, admin and everything else.
Pic of you sums it all up: an everyday scene at our community events.
Good luck

In light of recent

protests, it's time we review who we want to celebrate in history. Use this map to learn about the Abolitionists buried in Abney Park Cemetery. Each individual worked towards a brighter future, one that we still need to push for today.
NEWS: The Abney Park Trust has appointed
@misssamperrin
to the role of Trust Manager.
We're delighted to have her on the team. "I'm thrilled to be able to contribute to this very unique and special space," says Sam.
More info:
It's not advisable to go mushrooming in Abney Park. Edible plants are likely to be infused with arsenic, from the bodies embalmed in the Victorian era. Mushrooms are also likely to be full of lead because of the lead-lined coffins used by Victorians.

Now's the time for plans to become reality – and as the custodians of Hackney's much-loved magical urban woodland, we're pleased to see this commence.
We've worked with

& ecology advisors every step of the way, and will collaborate more as the project plays out.

Abney Park is full of surprises. Did you know that the first English woman to fly solo is buried here – and that you can chip in to help her memory live on?

The historic chapel at the centre of Abney Park is famously non-denominational. It is in fact the oldest surviving non-denominational chapel in Europe.

🌳 Our Abney Park restoration project - bringing the chapel back into use, and creating a new cafe, community room, workshops and accessible entrance - is nearing completion!
From tomorrow (6 Jan), the High St entrance will reopen.

Rotting wood vital for Abney’s ecosystem.
Whilst packing up our visitors centre for the upcoming restoration project we came across these wonderful photos of an ivy-clad Abney Chapel.
How times have changed. There's more change to come when the chapel is restored to its former glory.

Ever wondered what a burial in Abney would have set you back in the 19th century? Conveniently, we found an extensive document explaining all.
Not bad for a place only three and a half miles from the post office.

we want to shout out Abney resident Frank Bostock. He brought the American style of a traveling circus of animals to the UK. A celeb in his day, he is commemorated with the lion statue many park visitors know and love just by the Church Street entrance.
Change is coming to Abney Park as the £5m improvement work and restoration project gathers pace.
The work will see the historic chapel saved and restored to its former glory – while keeping the park's magical spirit, unique charm and urban oasis firmly in place.
The windows are going in. Europe's oldest surviving non-denominational chapel is coming back to life!

We're delighted to announce that we've just exceeded £15,000 in donations on our donation page!
Thanks so much to everyone who has chipped in to this campaign since March 2020. Every little donation helps the Trust put on events and care for the park, its monuments and nature.
Joanna Vassa is the most well-known child of the former slave, anti-slavery campaigner and author Olaudah Equiano (also known as Gustavus Vassa).
Joanna’s memorial was re-pinned and re-erected in 2006 after being re-discovered in Abney Park.

Now that the site is safe, most of the logs will remain in place to become deadwood – essential for boosting the park's ecology. Some will be used as woodchip and mulch.

We have been lucky enough to record some musicicians in Abney’s Dissenting Gothic Chapel. Our first release will be on the 14th of July. We will have audio and video from the performance as well as a 360 video for you to explore inside the chapel!
John Jay (1805-72) has one of the most ornate monuments in Abney, described as ‘a rich baroque sarcophagus of stone with curved belly, mounted on four lion’s paws and elaborately carved in relief’. It is said that this was almost certainly carved by the man himself.

ANNOUNCEMENT 📢
We're hosting loads of different walking tours next week – and they'll all feature your very last chance to see inside the oldest surviving non-denominational chapel in Europe before it's restored.
GRAVEYARD SYMBOLS
POINTING HANDS refer to Heaven, the soul ascending to the afterlife, of pointing up. Pointed downwards, it suggests an untimely death - the hand of God reaching down suddenly to lift up the soul to Heaven. (The hand isn’t pointing to Hell.)

Change is coming to Abney Park.
Preparations for the restoration project continue.
The project will bring new community spaces, boost biodiversity, restore the chapel and improve access.
The Hackney Council recommendation is to NOT implement the consultation proposals to require dogs on leads.
It recognises the concerns about impact on the site but will not implement the proposal.

Based on Stowell's new book, you will run, jump, search and find. But don't stray from the paths that wind.
