It is a tribute to the incredible resilience and agility of antisemitism that, at this time of deep American political division, dimwitted conspiracists on the right and the champagne toast of hypereducated progressives can find common ground on hating Jews.

...and global support for Israel softens. Quite a way to treat a friend. It's structurally reminiscent of Team Biden's approach to Ukraine--soaring rhetoric, however long it takes, etc.--but a reality of constraints and denied requests that weaken Ukraine and prolong the war.

It would be nice if Kissinger's joke "it may be dangerous to be America's enemy, but to be America's friend is fatal" weren't so often just a fair statement of fact. But it's ultimately the American interest that is harmed by this bizarre pattern.

Even the photos/film of this piece are moving. Very excited to see the thing itself installed. America's sacrifice in the First World War was immense--more than 53,000 killed in action--but now largely forgotten and Howard's work promises to do it some justice.

Demanding time for hostage diplomacy to play out delays any effort by Israel to regain the initiative, perhaps indefinitely, and gives ball control to Hamas, who can dole out a hostage or 2 every few days to rapturous headlines. Meanwhile Israeli politics starts to boil again...

Two things I find striking re: your comms on this subject: 1. In this essay on antisemitism, the word Israel--the homeland of the Jewish people--does not appear once. 2. In neither Ford Foundation statement on the current crisis is there a single mention of the hostages.

America has a de facto open Southern border. It is also the target of international terrorist organizations with meaningful capabilities. If we escape a serious terror attack at home in the coming months it will be because of pure dumb luck and little else.

Kudos to Sen. Wicker for his leadership on this. Our world today is the 1930s with nuclear weapons. The 3% of GDP we currently spend on defense is low--potentially catastrophically low. Both parties should support funding America's survival.
