A radiograph of a 4-year-old boy’s chest revealed that his persistent whistling cough was due to a toy whistle obstructing his left segmental bronchus. The foreign object was retrieved and a follow-up radiograph showed resolution of the hyperinflation.

A 16-year-old lion recently had his first of three radiation therapy treatments for skin cancer on his nose. He was treated by a team of five radiation therapists and one radiation oncologist in the City of Tshwane in South Africa.

The veterinary staff at Cheyenne Mountain Zoo came up with a creative way to humanely immobilize some energetic penguins for their x-ray exam. They used a traffic cone! The image reveals the penguin’s fascinating bone structures and allows vets to check for any internal issues.

The world’s first CT scan on a patient was performed in London #OTD in 1971. The patient, with a suspected frontal lobe tumor, was scanned with a prototype machine developed by Godfrey Hounsfield and his team at EMI Central Research Laboratories.

#OTD in 1896, Henri Becquerel discovered radioactiviy in the course of his work with uranium salts. The French physicist shared a Nobel prize with Pierre and Marie Curie. The becquerel, a unit of measurement for radioactivity, is named after him, as is a crater on Mars.

An eight-year-old cancer patient was surprised by St. Louis Children’s Hospital staff with a Stormtroopers radiation mask. He was given the mask and escorted through the hospital while the Imperial March song played. He has since been declared cancer free.
