The lab's FIRST research article, introducing temperate phage-antibiotic synergy (tPAS), where a low-dose inducer co-administered with a temperate phage eradicates the bacterial host. The paper is here: . Sharing stories that don’t make it into papers below

@PTurnbaugh Just today a neighbour asked my daughter (5) why I had to head back home early. She explained that I had to write a BIG letter to ask people for money. She understands.

If you've induced phages, you may have wondered if you can do the 'opposite' - block entry into lysogeny. You can, using protein synthesis inhibitors! Better still, this yields a potent synergy, functionally turning a temperate phage into a virulent one.

An exceptionally wonderful day: Got a grant. Looked forward to and enjoyed a >10 km run. Improved my pace by 1m 9s/km (!) for that distance. Weighed in at a healthy BMI for the first time since... 2011 (?). Next week: Baby #4 due, #CIHR NOR coming. But I feel ready for anything.

My first ever race today. The "Around the Bay 30 k", 40 km/h headwinds, snow... and it went superbly. Chip time of 2h7min50s, a full 7 minutes better than I thought I could do if everything went perfectly. Better yet, I really, genuinely enjoyed it. This is me at km 26.

While deep in a publish-or-perish rabbit hole, my trainees shook me out of it. They were firm, way too kind, and reminded me that my impact as educator/mentor will (and should!) exceed that of my publications. I shouldn't have needed reminding, but I am so thankful they did.

Today is the third (given my biases, most exciting?) Symposium for Phage Canada. In 2019, I read a CBC article that said there were 6 phage researchers in Canada. Through word of mouth, we have 145 participants, spanning 25 affiliations and at least 43 Canadian research teams.

Ran my first 10 km a year ago today, and have since run 2961 km. I cannot overstate how critical this has been to my mental (and physical) health, navigating a pandemic with four children 6-and-under. Absurdly lucky to live by a beautiful conservation area packed with trails.

Had time to cool off. Lab zoom social. One-on-one with a student. Hard run with the dog. I picked about 300 cactus needles out of my 18-mo old's hand, then 40 from me he generously donated. And... no, this CIHR decision still feels like an unjustifiable sucker-punch.

Temperate phages are awesome, but we also all “know” that they aren’t suitable for therapy. Except, of course, when we need them – as in the lovely work of @DedrickRebekah @GHatfull . Chemically interfering with the lysis/lysogeny decision may prove more scalable.

If he looks a little tired, it might be because my new, absurdly slowpace meant this nearing- 12-y old accompanied me for 365.5 km of running this month. I beat him by a measly +5.9 km. Tomorrow's a rest day for both of us, Bruno!

These are strange times. Here is something I have never seen before - and, given the initiative I just launched, I suspect it will be fleeting.

@Emily_YF_Feng Despite my appointment in Medicine, I take almost all my graduate students through BBS because they have more staff support. I have also paid my MedSci students BBS rates. I have raised these (and other) concerns at the IQAP review of the MedSci. You're right to push for better.

The anxiety I feel is completely disproportionate to any logical expectation for today's results* (*sort of) from a <15% success rate competition, and that, as an ECR, may be challenging to interpret (normalization), and that my lab can technically survive without... @CIHR_IRSC

Phage Twitter: I've been seeing more phage characterization papers that "optimize MOI" for higher titres. Why? I don't see biological insight, and while practical, these never seem to optimize any *other* parameters. Why is this singled out? What's the history I'm missing here?

@RafalMostowy The 50s! Lederberg & Zinder (Transduction), Fine Genetic Mapping of rII (Benzer) and how it lead to triplet code of DNA (Brenner et al), Luria & Delbrueck (Fluctutation), Hershey-Chase (DNA genetic material). A little further out; Arber (R-M) or the earlier host-controlled mod.?

@RenaudJolivet In Finland, PhDs are awarded a sword to fight for truth. I think ignorance is better armoured than that - this is a warhammer!

@WilsonToxLab One of the best pieces I of advice I ever received was from Andrew at a similar session for new faculty: scheduling in time for the activities you agree to. You're going to review that paper - don't just put the deadline in your calendar, put a 3 h block somewhere to do it in.

A fantastic, and much needed, review. Loved the section highlighting temperate phages and HGT - these are a few of my favourite things! Didn't love having to re-discover how to type a diaresis to write your name, but congratulations anyway Moïra.

Explain what you study using only the 1000 most used words () I study tiny things and the even tinier things that kill them to make more of themselves, but I care most about when the tinier things don't kill the tiny things, and sleep inside them instead.

Had I described my job on March 16th, I would have said I run a research lab. I have not run that research lab since then, and my schedule is just as busy. I think I need to re-evaluate how I describe my job.

I would love to have a science journalist offer a lecture in my grad course on scientific writing. Hearing @edyong209 way back @CSM_SCM 2017 was a real eye opener, and I don't feel I can do the topic justice. Could be virtual. Do I know anyone who knows someone willing?
