The Lightbox hosts the Toronto Palestinian Film Festival, as well as Imaginenative, each year. Two festivals whose work is to bring attention to art by those impacted by settler-colonial oppression. With this statement, they spit in the face of those they purport to support.

Béla’s frustrations are tangible to a generation realizing they have little to no autonomy over how they can create their work. Freeing one’s burden of industrial conditioning is difficult but necessary. We do not need normative structures of the production/distribution cycle.

Dialectical montage is back on the menu, baby. Nolan having been building toward an Eisensteinian project should have been more obvious to me than it is now, but my ignorance is likely due to his prior experiments being so determined by a parallel montage narrativity.

Palestinians require the end of apartheid in their land, the end of an ethnonationalist state. Labour requires protections from the rampant monopolization of private equity in AmeriCanada. These co-exist as fights against hegemony. This statement is demoralizing and ignorant.

Michael Snow was a brilliant filmmaker. Often there’d be times I believed him to be one of the funniest artists, too. Always curtious when I’d approach him with a question, always finding a way to get a joke out, a stinger to his answers.

The Quince Tree Sun. What careful, patient prowess. Observation into process into an ontological reckoning that convenes with the intersection of artist and objecthood, artist as objecthood through process. By miles my favourite from Erice and now I'm giddy for Close Your Eyes

Festival circuitry is indelibly more oppressive/restrictive/disrespectful of a filmmaker’s labour than Piracy. Few festivals seek the reform that begin a process of undoing this structural failure. I will forever make my films available as soon as every festival rejects them!

I'm a filmmaker. Festivals are much more problematic than piracy. I'm ok with people downloading my films, but I'm not ok with festivals that don't pay anything while they're making money thanks to the work of hundreds of unpaid artists.

Oppenheimer, that is to say, is the most ideologically complicated American blockbuster of the 21st century. Its formal intentions rebuke the centrist text, its centrist text reaffirms the protagonist’s essentialist hegemony, its montage tears that asunder. What am I to do?

Ultimately, an A list festival should most assuredly be paying every filmmaker they screen - if minor institutions make it priority, then someone as commanding as TIFF should be making the effort! Especially under the duress these filmmakers are likely under during COVID!!

This would definitely be the year for @TIFF_NET to pay filmmakers for the privilege of screening their films at the festival. Many of the perks of a in-person festival are impossible right now, the least one could do is pay the filmmaker a small fee for the right to their work.

Intrigued by the affinity among young film school types for Tarkovsky/Tarr/Akerman type of slow meditative cinema. Part of me admires the desire to step outside the mainstream. Part of me suspects it's a lazy attempt to bypass the hard work of creating compelling story & drama.

@LingoUnbound Cat in the Hat, while stupid and exasperating, has more of an autonomous imagination in its adaptation than most (if not all) of the indie darlings I see. I pray we can agree that counts for something!

One of the three most formative filmmakers of my life, a continued inspiration to the medium and everyone who works with it. “The problem is not to make political films, but to make films politically.” May his memory be a blessing to us all.

Down with the annual circuitry, where the studio system’s arrogance and greed can alter the trajectory of the independent work -which is made to share an increasingly homogenous platform. May all the power shift from bureaucrats to the conscientious artist!

One of the best from last year. Mekas infused with Tati without any sense of imitation. To see it on a big screen is one hell of an opportunity. Hope to see friends there!

Happening today! If you’re not on TO, I’ve got a distribution package that I’ll send to anyone who asks. Looking to partner with online publications in organizing this self-distribution endeavor, to help spread word. But in the meantime, send over a message if you’re interested!

If you’re in TO, come to Cinecycle for 2:30pm. A small screening of my 3hr debut feature will be on. Free for all. Will be trying to organize some more screenings in the city for later in the summer. If anyone wants to see it but isn’t in TO, reach out!

Support the physical distribution of great films! Ensuring something like this can last beyond the rare access of repertory, especially in the case of non-commercial 3D experimentation - this is a project to support

I'm TAKEN AWAY with the Silence Breakers program @hotdocs . GO SEE THIS THING. THE strongest curation I've come across with a shorts program. Just all around evocative work, especially the very candid Pumpkin Movie by Toronto's own @SophyRomvari

Been saying that all films should have their budget listed in their credits alongside exactly where specific sums came from. I’ve started doing that in my work. It’s very easy, and not at all controversial, unless you’re trying to hide something…

it's dismaying to see so many people so disinterested in even considering how films—even the ones we like—might be compromised by the ways they are financed/produced. they're connections that deserve to be made *because* they're deliberately obfuscated, deliberately invisibilized

It would only be in the benefit of the festival and its patronage to see Wavelengths expanded back to its prime: several shorts programs and double the feature slots as it has this year.

We should be condemning the industrial exploitation model that transgression is being produced under. We should be targeting this model bc if transgression will be reified under industrial exploitation, how is that transgressive by any means? Aesthetics cannot simply b autonomous

This has got to be a conflagration of the complex that is our identity. “Capture the Jewish experience”? Fuck all the way off. Most of these are Holocaust films, some of them antisemitic aestheticizations of stereotypes, some only Jewish by association. What utter bullshit.

Mamoru Oshii’s works stuns me — experiments in narrativity, utilizing that now illegible distance to offer stories of systemically wrought alienation. They’re gorgeous and always impressively distinct from one another. The versatility is dependably provocative. One of my favs

IMO, the entire way we (in the West, at least) understand, analyze and expect plot, narrative, story (none of these are the same thing) in film is pretty reductive and not conducive for the medium

It’s been a privilege and learning experience to have the opportunity to see Akerman’s full body of work. Her particular sensebilities of extrapolating the self into the alien environments that surround as self-expression - and the Jewish sense of wandering that couples. Immense.

The Tale of the Princess Kaguya (not pictured) and The Wind Rises (unsure if it’s available on the platform) are Ghiblis most elaborate, emotionally evocative works. They’re also the newest and so dont have canonical stature. Please ensure they aren’t forgotten in your marathons!

A few days ago I watched Rocha’s The Age of the Earth and I haven’t been able to look at an image the same since. Partially hoping that wears off, partially hoping it makes me more dogmatic towards the absolute need for discursive cinema. Still coming down from the gobsmack…

Wish more critics were more read on aesthetic theory so that the mere faculty of representation as an ethical binary based almost always on reflexivity wasn’t the end point of analysis
