Almost a year ago, I accepted my dream job of writing for The Canadian Press.
This morning, I found out that I will be laid off in a few weeks, along with 3 of the most talented journalists in NS - roughly half our Atlantic desk.
Sorry to do the whole "personal news" thing, but I'm very excited to announce that I will begin working with
@CBCNS
next week. Looking forward to this new chapter in life!
Some personal news: Today is my last day at CBC Nova Scotia.
I'm excited to announce I'll be starting a new job next week with
@GlobalHalifax
&
@Global_NB
. I'm so grateful for the opportunity to keep doing what I love and digging into the stories people care about.
A friendly reminder to everyone in
#Halifax
doing some last-minute
#HurricaneDorian
stockpiling: be nice to your cashier! They are dealing with a LOT today and it's not their fault the stores are busy.
I can't overstate the value CP provides to news orgs across the country. This is terrible news for
#cdnmedia
, and unfortunately this isn't the first (and won't be the last) blow to the industry. This comes after other significant losses within the company.
Some personal news: yesterday was my last day at Global News. After much reflection and consideration, I've decided to pursue a career outside of journalism. I will miss my colleagues very much.
Impressions of NYC from a Nova Scotian tourist:
- Literally everyone owns AirPods
- If you greet a cashier with "Hi, how are you?" they will look at you like you have two heads
- $1 bills are space-consuming and unnecessary
- RIP personal space
- Traffic light? What's that?
"I dare you to take a meeting with me, and explain to me, and look into my eyes and tell me that there is no health-care crisis in my province of Nova Scotia. I dare you."
“We tend to think of Maud Lewis as being a happy little elf in a wonderful, dreamlike, snow-white little house, but actually, she lived a life of abuse, and privation, and poverty, and I just find it incredible that she had the strength to keep going.”
When you write an article about someone, you're supposed to quote them. Or, at the very least, ask them for comment. Despite Lisa's very public statement, that standard journalistic practice was ignored. No wonder there's no byline. I'd be embarrassed to put my name on that.
Lisa LaFlamme is leaving CTV News. The network announced today that the Chief Anchor and Senior Editor is departing after more than 30 years with the company.
I'm sure I will have more thoughts in the coming weeks, but for now I just want to say that this past year writing for Canada's national wire service has been an incredible experience, and I will be sure to make the most out of my last few weeks.
Today I got an email that brought tears to my eyes. It was someone I interviewed for a tribute article about their relative who recently passed away. They said while COVID-19 is keeping their family apart, they've found comfort in reading their loved one's story.
That's a wrap,
@CdnPress
. This past year has been amazing. I've learned a ton, I've talked to countless wonderful people, and I've done some work I'm truly proud of. Onto the next adventure...
I'm taking a few weeks away from CBC to help with the online news workshop at
@ukings
. I'll miss reporting but I'm very excited to meet some bright future journalists!
Feeling very overwhelmed by all the kindness & support I've had in the last day. A huge thank you to everyone who took the time to reach out to me and my Canadian Press colleagues. This industry can be quite thankless at times so I'm grateful to see so many ppl appreciating us.
I'm looking to speak with Nova Scotians who have gone to work sick at a retail/restaurant job because they couldn't afford to miss shifts or were scared of getting in trouble if they called in. My DMs are open if you want to chat.

A man held a door for me today while I was slightly too far away. I jogged the last few steps to the door so as to not keep him waiting. He apologized. I said "no problem" and thanked him. He thanked me back. I then thanked him again. It was a profoundly Canadian moment.
When I was 11, I starred in an educational video about recycling for my town's waste management service. I recently unearthed the tape and got it digitized. Let's just say there's a reason I'm a web writer and not a TV personality.
I'm back working at
@ukings
again for the next few weeks, and, as always, our student journalists are putting out some truly stellar work. If you appreciate quality
#Halifax
journalism and you're not following
@signalhfx
, you really should.
Hanging up my headphones for the last time as my final day at
@NEWS957
draws to a close. A big thanks to
@thesmacleodshow
, who was the best talk show host a producer could have asked for, and to everyone else who helped make this job amazing.

My thoughts are with the affected staff at CTV and The Globe and Mail today. Speaking from experience, going through a "restructuring" is the worst. But while journalism is a tough industry, I've seen it produce even tougher people. Hoping everyone lands on their feet.
Happy holidays everyone! I'm on the Atlantic desk at The Canadian Press. Feel free to DM me with story ideas if you got 'em.
(This tweet brought to you by lots of coffee.)
I talked to some
@ukings
journalism students about breaking news today... sort of. They won't actually see the lecture until the fall. I'm sure the cameras learned a lot though.
Thanks for having me,
@lezlielowe
!
@tricky_bacon
@DrSarteschi
Our national team has covered her in the past. My work focuses mostly on local stories out of Nova Scotia and New Brunswick, so I'm not sure why my byline was used.
@atRachelGilmore
Rachel, I am so sorry. Terrible news. It's too bad we didn't get to work together more but I was struck by your professionalism and kindness during our Fiona coverage. Looking forward to seeing you land on your feet.
Remember that brief time period in March after we decided shaking hands was bad, but before we really started physical distancing? And for like 4 days people were telling us to greet each other by bumping elbows and tapping feet? Glad that never caught on.
After a therapist was charged with sexual assault for the second time, I saw some people wondering why he was able to continue practicing after the first.
I wondered too. Here's my latest:
I'm here at
@ArgyleFineArt
with
@thestarhalifax
for a "Bob Ross flash mob" - try saying that five times fast! No mistakes at this painting event, just happy accidents.
For those who haven't heard, I've accepted a weekend reporter-editor position with the Atlantic bureau of the Canadian Press. I'm going to miss radio but I'm excited for this opportunity!

Someday I will design and patent a collapsible umbrella that won't turn inside out at the slightest gust of wind and I will make millions in Nova Scotia alone
Me: Why is my computer so slow?
Also me: *opens 500 Google Chrome tabs, launches 10 different programs, inserts multiple SD cards, sets keyboard on fire*
I’ve been following the William Shatner vs Global News situation unfold with much interest. I’ve decided to create a thread summarizing (to the best of my ability) what happened.
Heartbroken for the wonderful folks at
@NEWS957
who are getting laid off. An especially big shoutout to my stellar former boss
@thesmacleodshow
, who took a huge chance on me when I was fresh out of j-school and taught me everything I know about live radio. Thinking of you all.
I can't express how much I've learned and grown over the last two years at CBC. Thank you to all of my wonderful coworkers and everyone who trusted me with their stories. This last year has been tough but you all helped make it a little less scary.
Today I attended my grandfather's funeral over webcast. He passed away in Montreal on May 15 at the age of 95.
Paying respects at my computer felt... odd. But I'm grateful technology is allowing people to be together in these times.
Here he is in his younger years. RIP Opa.
Huge props to the many journalists who have been working tirelessly (and also tiredly) to keep us informed during
#USAelection2020
. Now go take a nap!
Where does the time go? Hard to believe I graduated J-school three years ago today. Life since then has been quite the ride, but it's been an exciting one and I wouldn't trade it for the world.
There is currently no lineup at the COVID-19 rapid testing site at the Halifax Convention Centre! I was literally in and out in 3 minutes. Testing is available there today until 8 p.m. Rapid testing is also available at the Halifax Central Library until 7:30.
A new publication staffed by young journalists and prioritizing marginalized voices just launched today. It can be very hard for new reporters to get started so this is a really cool idea. I'll be reading!
It's finally Monday!
We are officially live over at .

Today I (very publicly) slipped and fell on my back near a busy street while running errands. A very kind driver pulled over, asked if I was okay and offered me a ride. I said no, but the effort was appreciated. Faith in humanity = higher than faith in
#Halifax
salting efforts
Throwback to when I worked at Canadian Tire several years ago and dressed up as an actual "Canadian tire." Only one of my customers got it but I still feel like I deserved a raise.

There are many things I will never understand. Astrophysics, for one. The meaning of life. IKEA assembly instructions. But what truly eludes me is why people enjoy smashing bus shelters for fun.
#halifax
I'm super glad there were no reported injuries, but it always makes me sad to see downed trees. Especially the big ones. So much history they've lived through. Best of luck to the crews out there assessing and cleaning up this morning.
