I’ll reiterate what we already know Med school is not made for the poor, low-income, & independent. 4th yrs are struggling to move. 3rd yrs are struggling to afford ERAS, aways, & step 2. 1st & 2nds are struggling to live, pay for step 1, & survive the summer. It’s not ok.

I was invited by my teacher (who had nothing to do with the gag gift). The trip was hosted by a Southern white church & they always open spots for students to join the medical team. They’ve been doing it for many years & are lead by a local organization in the village we went to.

According to them, tradition is to gag 1st time trip participants at the banquet. So they give everybody gag gifts (silly garden gloves for construction workers, Mr. Potato Head for the dentist) — then they get to the 4 medical students. Me, smoother Black woman, & 2 white guys.

I had a pain crisis 4 hrs into taking step 1, couldn’t take my meds that help because brain fog, & had to fly for my 1st surgery 2 days later during a pandemic & while crowdfunding to afford it. I broke down when I found out I passed because I was certain I failed it.
