The deafening silence around this heinous crime speaks volumes about normalising femicide. We have yet to hear an official denouncement of this double homicide, an explanation for how this could happen in an ICU unit to a survivor of a previous murder attempt, or even an apology.

Article 153, the "honor killing" legislation in Kuwait's penal code that we have been fighting to abolish, has been prioritised by the all (conservative) male members of KNA's women and family affairs committee who will review all "legal and religious opinions". Watch this space.

There is no justification for an honor killing legislation. The fact that it still exists is an issue in and of itself, and is emblematic of the way women's lives are valued. Let us hope that there will be light at the end of this very dark tunnel.

My chapter "Youth, Protest and the New Elite; Domestic Security and Dignity in Kuwait" focuses on historical and demographic aspects of the "new" political elite in Kuwait, and how youth groups were mobilised to demand political change from Nabiha Khamsa to Karamat Watan.

The murdered young woman was a National Assembly guard, whose job it is to protect and keep the peace in parliament. We have collectively failed to protect her, as we failed to protect others like her, from being killed by their kin. I hope all MPs will issue statements soon.
