Lyndon Johnson sent kids into hell knowing full well that they’d fight hard and die for their brothers. In a war that he had no intention of ever winning. A big nothing for money and politics. Mostly money. What a tragedy. Look at the pictures of these brave kids. Heartbreaking.

My friend Joe was a Huey Crew Chief for the 101st. He perfectly captures what I thought when we had those awful missions to pick up KIAs. “My first thought was always that their families didn’t even know yet.” That’s why new pilots were told, “Never look in the back.”

1/ You could hear some really funny stuff on the radio. We were covering a Dustoff PU of KIAs from a crash of one of our slicks. As he was climbing out a body bag fell out. Shark lead called and said, “Dustoff, you lost a body bag. We’ll cover you to go back and get it.”

@44MagnumBlue1 The most devastating indictment of LBJ is this: He kept sending us into the killing machine to risk everything we had. But his fear of Russia and China kept him from risking anything. May he be roasting in Hell.

@44MagnumBlue1 As I’ve mentioned before, it was not unusual. Graduate HS at 18. 2 months of Basic Tng. 10 months of flight school. Hit Vietnam as a 19-yr-old Huey driver. I had a yr in the Army before flight school and still managed to make it to Vietnam and get shot down before my 21st BD🎂🤣

@JayneMachacek 5,601 helicopters lost in Vietnam. 2,500 were Hueys. Not all crashes were fatal. Those that were usually had multiple KIA. My flight school class of 200 had 29 KIA Hueys & Cobras had more than 12 million flight hrs in Vietnam. Most combat flight time of any aircraft in history

@44MagnumBlue1 Just one of the many myths about the Vietnam war that still remains after more than half a century. Let me try to chip away at another. Most of the US KIAs in Vietnam were NOT draftees. Nearly 70% of US KIAs were volunteers. 63% enlisted KIAs were volunteers.🇺🇸🚁

@44MagnumBlue1 No one saw that better than the guys in the Hueys resupplying them. Some of my best missions were delivering mail, hot meals in mermite cans, taking out the kid going on R&R. Such simple things brought such joy to their miserable lives in the jungle, mountains and monsoons.🇺🇸🚁

@MAC_VSOG Kingbees hyped everyone’s situational awareness. They flew by their own rules & we didn’t know what they were. 4 Hueys & a Kingbee refueling at Quang Ngai. Suddenly we hear, “Kingbee takeoff now.” He overflies the Hueys (a no-no) & hovers onto the runway in front of a landing C7.
