It is with a heavy heart we mourn SSG Jimmy Smith, who was killed during a shooting in Raeford, NC.
Jimmy was a culinary specialist in GSB and was highly respected by his peers, subordinates, and leaders.

Sadly, we have learned that BG (R) Frank Toney, the first Commander of 1st Batallion, 3rd SFG (A) after our re-activation in 1990, passed away today at the age of 70. Toney led 1/3 during Operation Desert Storm.

He was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor.

Sgt. 1st Class Mitchell A. Lane died August 29, 2003, near Deh Chopan, Afghanistan, from injuries he suffered from a fall while conducting a fast rope infiltration from a helicopter during a night combat assault.

Yesterday, new Green Berets signed the Code Of the Special Forces before their Regimental First Formation. They used a bullet pen made by Mr. Jeff Falkel, a Gold Star father, to honor his son SSG Chris Falkel, a Silver Star recipient who was KIA in Afghanistan on Aug. 8, 2005.
Last week we conducted our Monthly Remembrance PT. An incredible turnout to share in honoring the legacy, memories and stories of our fallen heroes from the month of September in the post 9/11 era.

Today we honor one of our fallen heroes. Master Sgt. George A. Bannar Jr. was killed in action August 20, 2013 in Afghanistan. He died of wounds inflicted from small-arms fire while fighting the enemy.

We are sad to report that Command Sgt. Major (R) Bill Phipps, our first CSM after reactivation in 1990, passed away yesterday at the age of 73. Our condolences are with his family.
Services will be Nov. 3 at 10 a.m. at Hood Funeral Home in Crossville, TN.

7th Special Forces Group (Airborne) Soldier Dies in Afghanistan
FORT BRAGG, N.C.-- Sgt. 1st Class Michael James Goble, 33, a U.S. Special Forces Soldier, died in Afghanistan on December 23rd due to injuries sustained during combat operations on December 22, 2019.

Yesterday, SFC Jeremiah Johnson, a 74D and member of 3rd Group’s CBRN Recon Detachment (CRD), was posthumously inducted into the US Army Chemical Corps Hall of Fame at FLW, Missouri. SFC Johnson was killed in action in October 2017 while defending his teammates in Niger.

Members of 3rd Group attended an Organically Designed & Built Small Unmanned Aerial Systems (ODB sUAS) course hosted at Oak Grove Technologies in Hoffman, NC. The course provided students with the ability to build, program, and pilot small drones.
