One of my favorite memories of baseball in the '70s is Willie Stargell windmilling his bat before launching a ball into the bleachers (or occasionally out of the ballpark). Willie died OTD in 2001, the day PNC Park opened in Pittsburgh.

Happy 85th Birthday to Brooks Robinson! "The Human Vacuum Cleaner" won 16 consecutive Gold Gloves at third base, finished his career with 2,848 hits and by all accounts is one of the nicest guys you could hope to meet.
Happy 74th Birthday to George Foster! One of baseball's most feared hitters in the '70s and a key member of the Big Red Machine, George had a season for the ages in '77: MVP, 52 HRs, 149 RBIs, .320 average and 124 runs scored. All of those stats led the league except for average.

When I started this account five years ago this week, I just wanted to have some fun talking 1970s baseball and maybe get a few hundred followers. But because of all of you, running the account has been even better than I expected. Thanks for following and Happy Anniversary!
Happy 73rd Birthday to Vida Blue! A six-time All-Star and one of the most popular players of the '70s, Vida had a season for the ages in 1971: 24-8 record, 1.82 ERA, 8 shutouts, 301 Ks in 312 innings, All-Star Game starter, Cy Young Award, MVP.
Happy 79th Birthday to Tommy John! After his revolutionary surgery in 1974 at age 31, Tommy won 164 more games, made three All-Star teams and was the NL Cy Young runner-up in '77.
