Just learned of Fred Willard's passing. Just about the funniest human ever to walk the planet. An amazing talent, in telekinetic contact with the very wellspring of comedy.
High praise from a BBC reporter for the "far more disciplined" post-South Carolina Joe Biden: "He's reading his speeches, he's finishing his sentences, he's completing his thoughts."
Took me a moment to grasp that Martin Mull has passed. During the late 70s, we worked together on Fernwood Tonight & its successor series. We wrote together, often at the beach (!), and sometimes I’d come out and riff with him. Mucho laffs! Always a treat to be with. RIP MM.
New Orleans just lost a giant. Second one, after the recent passing of Leah Chase. RIP Mac Rebennack, AKA Dr. John. For a great read, check out his autobiography some time. And listen to his music any time.
Re: the midterm elections, in which most Americans don't choose to participate: they're the most democratic national elections we have--no Electoral College. Every vote really does count.
RIP Mort Sahl. He just invented modern American political satire, is all. Was still doing great stand ups on Periscope until very recently. And while he was best known for stinging wit, he was always an expert joke writer.

Birtherism was "a long time ago." per Jared Kushner. It ended, with a Trump press conference, three years ago this August. Time flies when you're having power.
Dershowitz and Trump--where had they met before? Right, the Lolita Express. And who got Jeffrey Epstein his sweet deal in Florida? Right, Ken Starr.
They got the band back together.
Note to White House: if new emails are being taken “out of context “, best solution is to...provide the context, via witnesses and docs. You’re welcome
The great radio artist of our time has passed away. You will never hear anybody smarter, darker, funnier than Joe Frank. RIP, my friend. Check him out at No better honor of his memory than you hearing his work.
Growing up in LA, one heard the sound of Vin Scully’s melodious voice echoing from gas stations and portable radios all summer. We had a chat once, and, before an enthralled audience, he was an effortlessly fascinating storyteller. And a proper gent.. RIP, Vin.
RIP the satirical genius Paul Krassner. His insanely ballsy approach to political comedy stands ever taller today. We did a couple of live shows together in the 90s (with Peter Bergman), and as hard as he was on his targets, he was always lovely to work with. 1/2
On this Labor Day, I can’t help remembering The Telethon. The mawkishness and anger JL expressed in the wee hours is eerily similar to what was on display in “The Day the Clown Cried”.
Note: it was Kavanaugh's supporters who subjected his early life to examination. Many of them said that his whole life demonstrates a character that would make this act impossible. As the lawyers say, that "opened the door" to the question: Does it?
In Bill Barr’s new book, “in the final months of the administration, he came to realize that “Trump cared only about one thing: himself””
What took Barr so long?
Had the privilege and pleasure of guesting on Bob Newhart’s most recent series. As professionally delightful as working, as a child, for Jack Benny. Happy birthday, Bob Newhart! One of the true greats.
Everybody knows what's wrong with Twitter. But what's good about it is that, on a day like today, it makes up for years of having had one of the worst birthdays on the calendar. Thanks for all the good wishes!
How about this for transparency? Every time a pol appears on TV, the names of his/her top 5 donors appears on screen at the beginning of the segment. We have the technology...
Finally, re Jerry West: he was on the staff of Magic Johnson’s basketball camp for “grownups”. He saw me shooting free throws and said, “Who taught you to shoot like that?” I said, truthfully, nobody. “Here ‘s how you shoot free throws,” he said , and taught me how.
This photo is the only documentation I've ever seen of David L. Lander, Michael McKean and me on tour with Fred Willard and the Ace Trucking Co in the early 1970s. It was my intro to Fred's brilliance.
I just lost a dear, brilliant, talented friend of two-plus decades. His real legacy will be the ongoing brain research he has supported. But he also rocked on guitar! Goodbye, Paul Allen.
Comedy giant Carl Reiner has left the room. I got to know him a bit, not that long after he had made the first great TV show about TV. Legendarily funny, but, fortunately, not "always on".
Wrote, acted, directed. Did it all, except trumpet.
When all three cable "news" nets have turned over great gobs of their time to "panels" of partisan shouters, rather than reporters, how do we expect viewers not to descend into fact-free partisan silos?
And suddenly it hits someone you know, and it feels very different. I'm sending good thoughts to Adam Schlesinger, co-founder of Fountains of Wayne. Beat this sucker, man!
RIP Alex Trebek. He fought a tremendous and inspiring battle against an implacable foe. I met him a few times during Celebrity Jeopardy and found him as charming and enjoyable off-air as everybody knew he was on-air. Will miss him every evening.

asks why states didn't build backup supplies of medical equipment. Someone tell him: unlike the federal government, states have to run a balanced budget every year. They can't print money. Only the federal government can.
Years from now, I will remember that I was recording a. “Simpsons” ep when the Verdict came through on my phone. Now history has VE day, VJ Day, and V Day.
