In two hours I have to say goodbye to this sweet, gentle soul. I can barely breathe. I don’t know how I’m going to get through it. He is in total kidney failure and there’s nothing that can be done. My heart is breaking.

Yesterday was an awful day. Our nine year old Greyhound, Lucas, died very suddenly in the early morning, shortly after we all woke up. We suspect it was a stroke. The suddenness was unbearable. We will miss him forever. Dean and I are gutted.

49 years ago, on July 5, I met the man I’d spend my life with. I was just 19 and it was the day after his 20th birthday. He was tall with long, wavy hair and I was smitten pretty much instantly. We rarely take pics together, but here we are on our 43rd and 27th anniversaries.

Forty three years ago today, at 5:00 pm, I met a guy with long, curly, brown hair, who had a fantastic tan and a hairy chest. I kept looking at him all night. Little did I know, I’d spend the rest of my life with him.

My mother is now in hospice. End stage COPD is a horrible thing to witness. I deeply regret that I ever smoked and wish I had quit years before I finally did. At my age, I’m incredibly lucky to still have had my mom alive and I’m can’t imagine life without her. I’m heartbroken.

Cy. The absolute best boy imaginable. His goal each day was to be a good boy and he always exceeded this goal. Today we received the unbelievably sad news that Cy’s kidney are failing and there’s no treatment that will save him. So, while we still have him we will cherish him.

After my stepfather died in 2015, my mom asked me to call her every morning to make sure she was “still alive.” Each and every day, for seven years, we chatted at 10am. She died three weeks ago, and my instinct is still to call her every morning. It’s like a daily dagger.

No child, regardless of their age, is prepared to help a parent through the end of their life. My 91 year old mother is failing fairly rapidly and while I’m doing all I can, it feels so insufficient. I’m gutted.

@Gram_Kat Cyrus raced in Birmingham Alabama. He retired early and was 2 1/2 when we adopted him. We have one other Greyhound, Lucas, who flunked out of racing school and he was just a year old when we got him.

My 92 year old mother received a rather dire medical diagnosis this past week. Her first comment to the doctor was: “I’d better be here long enough to vote against Trump.” That’s my mama. ❤️

Six years ago on this date, I smoked my last cigarette. I started smoking far too young and was ready to kick my addiction. After many previous attempts at quitting, I was finally successful. I’m still pretty proud that I did it.
