Lionel Scaloni basically got the Argentina job by accident. An assistant in 2018, the broke AFA promoted him temporarily after sacking Jorge Sampaoli. Broke a 28-year trophy drought with the Copa America, then masterminds a first World Cup in 36 years. Increíble.

Barcelona averaged just under 54,000 fans last season. So far they've had over 80,000 in each game of their 3 games at Camp Nou (including the Gamper). Over-simplified, but if you take €40 as an average ticket, that's over an extra €1m a game. Over a season could be €60-70m.

Many liked to quote this phrase at Gerard Piqué, but he ended last season as Barcelona's best defender. He is retiring three months into a new season once it became clear he was no longer first choice. A legend that people will now assess more justice.

From 9th place to a La Liga title in 18 months and 8 days. Xavi has had help, shown weaknesses, but hard to argue that that is not a fantastic job. Ending 3 seasons run with only a Copa, here are some of things he has done well (what has to improve will be analysed all summer)⬇️

Memphis Depay is available for €20m and it might seem steep for someone with a year on his contract, but he's worth it. Spurs have been linked but any top side, perhaps in Italy, would be getting an alpha-male with technique, physique and a point to prove.

FRENKIE DE JONG Very tricky to toe the club line and maintain the confidence of the player when Barcelona spent all summer trying to sell him. At the time, you could make a decent argument for selling him. Has found a role for him and gotten consistently good performances.

Álvaro Cervera has just been lost his job at Cádiz. This is him leaving after his final press conference. Never seen a reception like this for a sacked manager. What a unique place Cádiz is.

Perhaps the issue is not that Luis Enrique leaves players out, but that we continue to be surprised. For several years he's selected preferred players often irrespective of club form or status. Did we really expect him to change a month before the WC? Quizás, quizás, quizás...

TIPPED THE SCALES AGAINST REAL MADRID 4-3 record against Los Blancos currently, and with what most people would agree is a worse team pound for pound. Also snapped a five-game losing streak, showing Barcelona can look their rivals in the eyes again - crucial for Barca.

Really don't think this is dramatic for Barcelona. Came up against a better team (probably?), with a much better squad, and a better manager. With 10 minutes to go, PSG brought on a midfielder that would've played 180 minutes for them. Barça made the QFs, that's what they needed

In the last 4 days, Osasuna, Rayo Vallecano and Real Sociedad have gone toe-to-toe with Real Madrid, Barcelona and Atlético, none of them were beaten. For me, Basque minds are at the forefront of Spanish football right now. Props to Arrasate, Iraola and Alguacil.

While there are nuances obviously, I find it interesting that English pundits are focusing so much on absences for United tonight. When Barcelona went out against United, felt like the microscope was much more focused on Xavi rather than strength in depth.

It's a good job Mendilibar is a grumpy old Basque manager in a polo, and not roll-neck toting 30-something German. Otherwise they'd be whisking him off to some elite job somewhere.

Currently on my way to watch Rayo, and I really hope Iraola stays. But be assured, if Leeds do hire him, they have one of the best managers in Spain. Tonight he could take them 5th, within 3 points of 4th. They have the 5th lowest salary limit in La Liga.

Andoni Iraola, Bielsa disciple, could be a name on the Leeds United shortlist to replace Jesse Marsch. @RuriBarlow spoke about him and his Rayo Vallecano team a little over a year ago.
