There are few who know firsthand the tragic realities of gun violence like NYPD detectives. They fight for every victim — and for the @NYPD19Pct , justice for Azsia Johnson was a top priority.

It is with sadness that we have learned news of the death of journalist Jim Dwyer, a hard-hitting reporter and mentor to countless whose @nytimes column, About New York, captured the voices of everyday New Yorkers. His style, character, grace, wit and conscience will be missed.

Detective Chris McDonnell spent 30 years proudly keeping our city safe. Although he was highly dedicated to the Job, his heart belonged to his wife and son. In June of 2020 he tragically became a casualty of #COVID19 — but the NYPD ensured we will #NeverForget one of NY’s Finest.

The NYPD will spare no resource to help stop gun violence. And our men and women in blue risk it all as they focus on those carrying illegal guns. Their restraint and dedication are unmatched.

As we remember those we lost on that tragic, terrible day 18 years ago, we also honor the hundreds we lost in the months and years after...and that we continue to lose

Valor, honor, compassion — and the willingness to make the ultimate sacrifice are principles that guide our cops. NYPD Medal Day recognizes why they’re without a doubt NY’s Finest.
