They ARE living lives "very carefully built to seem as straight as possible" bc they fear or KNOW they may not be accepted. I don't think it takes tremendous empathy to acknowledge that.

That means being around the young woman's parents when I'm not there. I have a real problem with my sons being even implicitly threatened with gun violence when I'm not there.
