Substance abuse researchers often focus on what is going on in protracted abstinence, but THIS IS WHY I am continually banging the drum that we need a better understanding of and better treatments for acute withdrawal. The physicians keep telling us, we need to listen...
Recently had a patient who was really suffering from very miserable opioid withdrawal after stopping heroin (on top of some other unpleasant things) tell me their family had convinced them not to start buprenorphine (suboxone) therapy because “it’s just legal heroin”
A thread...
if you ever wonder what the heck your PI is doing sitting in their office all day long, it's filling out forms that don't make sense and don't even appear to apply to what they're doing in life. Also these forms are slowly rotting our brains.
been debating if I should put this out here because the whole thing causes me anxiety. BUT, one of the quotes from the NYT's article has me rather upset. The focus on "As I’ve reflected on my actions the last few days" implies that the bad behavior was recent. It's not: A THREAD
So f'ing sick of this advice from wealthy senior women in academia. Also see "just hire someone to watch your kids/pick them up" ....as if there are scores of magical people around who can work for you for 4 hours a week on the most inconvenient schedule
Ok tenure-track moms out there. I learned that only 35% of married moms in the sciences get tenure. I asked the presenter/mentor what can be done to increase these

. She said stop cleaning toilets (aka hire someone to clean) & and hire someone to cook my meals.
@Momademia
Now that it's official, I can say how proud I am that
@superkash
will be the next director of BCAS. I know of no one more well suited for this role (despite biases). I have known Tom as a scientist for 21 years, and have watched him grow to who he is today
In the spirit of this week being what it has, um, been, I am happy to share that my lab has won a small internal award. These funds will help us expand our opioid use disorder research.
Rich women will always have access to safe abortion. Laws restricting abortion access are always put into place to maintain cycles of poverty. (Same with voting rights, housing rights, etc.....I feel like a fucking broken record)
I was faculty when this shit all went down, but it gutted me. People who are my friends dismissed me. When the GoFundMe started I almost lost it. I knew that this was all going to go up in flames. And us women in science were going to be the ones to suffer./fin
PSA for scientific journals. If I want to exclude a reviewer I shouldn't have to justify it in writing. Chances are likely I am excluding a known bad actor/predator, someone who has harassed me or someone in my lab, or is well known within the community to have dubious morals.
Welp, I made just a little ravioli....filled with goat cheese, rosemary, lemon zest, pepper, miniscule amount of time. Dressed in a fig and rosemary sauce, topped with bacon, and a little basil (parsley all gone for the year)
@Jonesieman
@Sciencing_Bi
where is the money...where is the money that you stole from people...I literally cried tears as I watched my friends and colleagues send you money
The best thing about being a neuroscientist raising small people (toddlers) is getting to see what it's really like with no/low functioning PFC. You get all limbic system all the time. It's like all highs and lows with lightening speed frequency. It's really fascinating
I've been thinking a lot about the paper that just came out. I wanted to think before making some "profound" statement. Ultimately I don't think I have much more to add to the current narrative but I think what hurts extra hard about all of this is that...
Undoubtedly this year has been extremely hard on everyone in ways big and small. Simultaneously, this has been an extraordinary year for the folks in my lab, and I want to take a moment to celebrate each of their accomplishments!
If you had told me a year ago that I would decide to run 15 miles this morning I would have laughed and laughed. Last year I struggled to run a mile. Also, need to start bringing water/food for these long runs. Those last 4 miles are ugly
for the love of God scientific journals....can we please put the supplemental data into the same PDF as the rest of the paper...at least for the reviewers???
congrats to my esteemed colleague
@superkash
for his promotion to Full Professor....please let me know when the telekinesis starts so that I am prepared
super happy to announce that our latest publication is now online huge shout out to

for all bringing this one in!
Excited to announce that our work examining xylazine and dexmedetomedine in the drug supply has now been funded! We received a 2 year U01 from the
@FDA
as part of the Triangle CERSI. This mechanism allows us to springboard our research and witha dream team of investigators...
I am so incredibly proud of Tom! When I first met him over 18 years ago I was immediately impressed by his scientific acumen, and quite in awe as he casually mapped out his dissertation on a white board one day in lab.

Super proud to share our first paper with physiology in LC neurons! (Somewhere I've been recording from for a while, but we've yet to publish on)....led by postdoc

with co-authors Christina Catavero, and Michael Kasten. Larger thread coming soon!
Today
@superkash
and I have been married for 15 WONDERFUL years. I thank the US House of Representatives for getting me the present I've wanted for the past 3 years.
some of my favorite parts here are her saying that I could have addressed this with :Sci_bi" without including her. that it was "obnoxious, untrue, and fucks with her life." and that it was "tacky af". SHE WAS THE SAME PERSON. The gaslighting was unbelievable.
Finished! Learned a lot about myself and gonna have some strategies for next year! Thank you so much pocket people for cheering me on. Literally there were parts of this that knowing you guys care got me through! The absolute best however...
Today is the day I've been anticipating for 5.5 years!
@maria_luisa_pr
is defending her dissertation! I have so many feelings, but mainly extreme pride and awe for all she's accomplished. I couldn't have dreamed of a better first student from the
@ZMcELab
...lots of pics to come
Once a senior male colleague asked me if I wanted to be a woman in science or an advocate for women in science, with the implication I couldn't do both....from my vantage point I don't have the luxury of choosing one over the other

passed away yesterday evening, having reached the end of her road with ovarian cancer. She leaves behind her Sun and Moon, a loving extended family, colleagues and students, friends around the world, and so many others who have been touched by her & her story 1/n
Been avoiding weighing in but..One of the things that isn't transparent is that PIs not only pay stipends, but also tuition, health insurance, and other associated fees (most of the time, when I was a PD in a Chemistry dept some student fees weren't paid).
It’s clear from the discussion on salaries that many postdocs and students do not know where the money for their stipend/salaries (or even their PI salaries) come from. PIs should be more open about this to allow trainees to make informed career decisions
very happy to share that the
@ZMcELab
has received new funding from the Foundation of Hope
@walkforhope
to investigate mechanisms of psychiatric symptoms in dementia models! This is an exciting newer area of work in the lab and I am really excited about where we can take things!
This account was originally supposed to be the account if our little farm, named The Nanopharm. It has basically become my account though. For a while it will reflect it's intended purpose as I cannot stop taking pics of these babies.
Why are ~10% of humans left-handed? (🙋♂️) Exome-wide association study of rare variants in UK Biobank identified alleles of the beta-tubulin gene TUBB4B. Could be related to cilia function, which has been linked to other left-right asymmetries.
Blown away to have been elected to the

board of directors with my friend and scientific sibling
@SamCentanni
! (I've never been elected to anything so really amazed and honored!)
R this morning: "guys, I've got something inside my body..." us mildly concerned: "what is it buddy?" R: "I got this feelin', inside my bones, it goes electric wavy when I turn it on"
Y'all, you better tell me about all the amazing things happening to you both personally and professionally/scientifically. We all have ups and downs, and I'm here to celebrate your wins and provide a shoulder when you need it. We need more transparency in this business, not less.
excited to officially announce that the
@ZMcELab
is gaining two new students this year. Welcome
@SaraYConley
and
@GrayGereau
! Excited to have them on board and to see them grow over the course of the next several years!
I just realized that "The Lion King" is a retelling of Hamlet, and am feeling rather daft about it. Even down to Timon and Pumba being Rosenkrantz and Guildenstern...how on earth did this take me so long???
PSA: there are going to be people you'll never convince, who never will take you seriously as a scientist, who will never see your contributions as valid. The sooner you can get over these people the better. I say this as someone who has taken a long time to get over these people
Hill I am willing to die on: it is always good for people to understand the business side of science and how you get money and where it goes. I didn't understand what indirects were until my first $100,000 grant became $90,909.09
Still thinking about that horrible PI and her horrible naloxone paper...just in case people were unaware, no one wants to take naloxone. It is going to feel extremely horrible, shitty doesn't even begin to describe. No one is keeping it around so they can be more reckless.
For the record, people can speak any language they want in the
@ZMcELab
....shit the things you never think you need to say out loud. Now to update the lab guide!
I seriously wonder how many men get reviews that basically question their competency to write a manuscript. No manuscript is perfect, but I seem to get some reviewers who feel like they need to "school" me in some really interesting ways:
PSA for colleagues assigning grades: we are still in a global pandemic and people's lives are still not normal. There are still massive disruptions in daily life, still quarantines. You may not know all your students' business bc it is not for you to know. Be compassionate
