WE DID IT: with a landslide margin of 1785–912, we are officially the MITGSU-UE!!!
What started 4 years ago with a dozen students in an MIT classroom discussing the needs of graduate workers has culminated in this historic victory for student-workers at MIT. Now, we celebrate!
We are proud to publicly announce the MIT Graduate Student Union! MIT grad student-workers are unionizing to create a healthy and fair working and learning environment for all, by giving us a voice in the decisions that affect us. (1/4)
#MITGSU
The tentative agreement that we reached with the MIT Admin has been officially ratified into a contract! After our years of fighting, MIT grad workers now have a legally binding contract that sets in place the protections and benefits we all deserve.
Today, we are sending the MIT administration a request to voluntarily recognize the widespread, democratic mandate for a union at MIT. In under 3 mos., a clear majority of graduate workers across all depts have said YES to forming
#MITGSU
by signing their union cards. (1/n)
We have officially rejected the
@MIT
administration’s contract proposal with a resounding NO vote. After a tremendous vote of 1715 no votes to 226 yes votes, it is abundantly clear that MIT’s contract proposal does not meet the needs of graduate workers.
Yesterday we filed thousands of cards that grad students at MIT signed in support of
#MITGSU
with the National Labor Relations Board to initiate our union election. That means THIS TERM we will be voting YES for our union to secure a better workplace for MIT grad students. (1/n)
After 8 months of negotiating, the contract offered by MIT admin is despicable and disrespectful of all the value graduate workers bring to teaching and research at this institute. We plan to vote NO on the contract with no union shop, an effective pay cut, and no real recourse.
The energy was wild today at the picket - 100s of grad workers over 9 hours. Thanks to everyone who came out. It is clear that MIT grad workers will fight for what we need. We make this institute run and deserve higher wages, better benefits, real recourse, and union shop!!!
MIT administration did not voluntarily recognize our union - and as such, we're moving forward with an NLRB election to secure our union. Stay up to date as this process develops at
.
@MIT
is a world class institution with an endowment of over $27 billion, yet its grad students are paying 55% of their stipend on rent & don't even have dental insurance.
Organized power is realized power & I stand in solidarity with
@MITGradUnion
.
Our preview picket is starting strong! We are fighting for higher wages, expanded benefits, real recourse, and union shop. We will be here all day - we say NO to the status quo!!!
1/n Last week,
@SW_Columbia
reached a tentative agreement for their contract with Columbia University. While graduate workers at Columbia still have to vote on their final contract, they won amazing contract provisions that are raise the standards for graduate workers everywhere.
WE DESERVE RESPECT!
MIT has continued to stall on our demands for real recourse for harassment, discrimination, and bullying, equal opportunities for international workers, a union shop, and equal workplace rights for Fellows. But we won't give up without a fight!
The May Day Picket is off!!! Hundreds upon hundreds of grad student workers will turn out today bc we will not accept the status quo! We need things like a fair stipend, dental/vision coverage, real recourse, T-passes, and Union Shop!!!
Stay tuned for tweets throughout the day!
Earlier this year, MIT denied ~20% of all grad workers the right to decide whether or not to form a union based on the bizarre claim that fellows are only students & are not required to provide specific services, or work on specific research to maintain their funding. (1/3)
We are essential workers who make possible and promote every core mission of MIT. We deserve dignity, respect, and a voice in our research conditions. We are organizing a union to give grad student-workers the power to demand… (2/4)
#MITGSU
Join thousands of grad workers who are publicly declaring they are voting YES for
#MITGSU
April 4th & 5th by signing the Vote Yes petition:
We're voting yes to make our voice heard! We're voting yes for a better workplace! We're voting yes for our union!
...fair work expectations, the resources required to do our work, a safe and equitable work environment for all, financial security and guaranteed support, affordable housing, comprehensive benefits, and equal support and protections for international students. (3/4)

We will be kicking off our unionization campaign with a launch rally TODAY at 5pm at the courtyard outside of the Stata Center/Koch Institute! Please wear a mask to adhere to COVID safety guidelines and wear red to show support! RSVP at . (4/4)
#MITGSU
Harassment, discrimination, and bullying are rampant problems at MIT with almost 40% of grad workers facing harassing behavior and only 0.04% using MIT’s IDHR process.
We are kicking off our unionization campaign with a launch rally TODAY at 5pm (livestream: ) at the courtyard outside of the Stata Center/Koch Institute! (1/2)

Happening now! We are delivering our demands to
@MIT
’s President Kornbluth now. With over 2000 signatories: WE DEMAND MIT TO END THR UNJUST DISCIPLINE FOR PEACEFUL PROTEST NOW!
Standing in solidarity with our friends and allies
@HGSUUAW
who kicked-off their strike at 6am, in the middle of a nor'easter, to fight for living wages, real recourse in discrimination and harassment complaints, and other basic protections. We’ve got your back,
#HarvardOnStrike

In the last bargaining session before our strike deadline Harvard did not meet our demands for a living wage and real recourse. The strike is ON. See you on the picket line.

"There is no such thing as 'the union.' You are the union. We are the union! ... The union is all of you standing together, collectively fighting for your rights, and your pay, and your working conditions."
Brandon, President of Harvard GSU

On May 15-18 we are voting NO for a contract without union shop, fair compensation to keep up with inflation, and real recourse for harassment, discrimination, and bullying. These are core issues for grad workers across our membership, and we need to see them addressed.
The first ever mid-year pay raise won 2.5 weeks after the MIT GSU card campaign launched just landed in the bank accounts of grad workers. Make no mistake, this raise is because 1000s of graduate workers are standing together, signing cards, & demanding better working conditions.
Good morning! We're so excited for our turnout yesterday - look at this wonderful shot from Arish S! But no time to rest - our card campaign is underway, and we're ready to get the signatures we need to win. If you can, visit us at and sign today.
#MITGSU
Yesterday we spoke out against MIT’s violation of our contract! MIT admin has denied graduate workers’ contractually-guaranteed right to union representation during the IDHR (Institute Discrimination and Harassment Response) disciplinary meetings.
@MIT
Hundreds and grad workers joined in on the picket today. Thousands have joined the graduate student union voting yes last Spring. We ask Sally Kornbluth to consider that and giving grad workers the higher wages, real recourse, benefits, and union shop we are fighting for.
On Wednesday, September 13, at 5:30pm, in Hockfield Court, we will all gather for our first General Membership Meeting (GMM) to launch our strike pledge. RSVP:
Starting tomorrow, May 15-18, we MIT grad workers will vote NO to the proposed contract by MIT admin.
Why? The offered contract is insulting and inadequate with not keeping up with cost of living, no protections for power-based harassment/discrimination, and no union shop. (1/n)
MIT violently arrested 9 students and grad workers yesterday engaging in peaceful protest at Stata parking garage. EMERGENCY RALLY TODAY AT 3PM at MIT Lobby 7 steps. (Video credits:
@BTnewsroom

In our second speak out during our all day picket today, we tell the admin that it is despicable that they are trying to maintain the status quo. But graduate student workers say no. We say NO to the STATUS QUO!!!
Were you rejected last week? We were too 💔 MIT admin claims grad workers funded by fellowships should be excluded from our union as fellows are "self-directed and working voluntarily" whereas RAs/TAs are under the direction and supervision of MIT. Does that seem right? 🤔 (1/2)
For today's
#TestimonialTuesday
we hear from Benjamin, who values
#MITGSU
's democratic nature - we as workers voted for our union, and we as workers will vote on the issues important to us, our contracts, and how our union will make MIT a better place. (1/2)
The 4.5% has got to go! With inflation nearly 7%, this is effectively a pay cut! Across Cambridge, Somerville, and Boston rent prices and even groceries are skyrocketing. How are we expected to be okay when MIT has the resources to but won’t cover our financial needs.
You may have heard that MIT has announced a pay increase for graduate workers. This isn't random - it's a direct result of our union campaign. Read our press release here:
#MITGSU
Thanks to the tremendous pressure we all created through our pickets, RSVPs to the General Membership Meeting, and a looming strike threat, MIT moved on all three of our key issues

(2) Economics: A compensation package with a net compensation improvement that averages more than 10% for our members in the first year alone. This package includes 5.4%, 3.5%, and 3.25% successive annual raises; 83.8% dental; access to optical insurance; 70% T-pass; and backpay.

addresses the concern that “the union will make all of the decisions for you.” From our union election to our contract, we as graduate workers are making these decisions together with a democratic process. We are the union; you are the union. (1/2)
This is a major victory for our union, and it is thanks to our members’ stalwart solidarity. We stand in solidarity with the over 25,000 UE graduate workers across the country who are fighting to achieve the same protections that we have won through years of organizing.
MIT GSU condemns the brutal arrests as well as the other disciplinary actions against peaceful protesters, including immediate suspensions without due process and evictions of dozens others. We will not stand for unjust discipline and discharge, and filed unfair labor practices.
Our contract ratification votes began this morning and will end on Friday at 5pm. Workers are having important debates about ratification. The the majority of elected leadership of both SRU & UAW 2865 recommend a yes vote, while others oppose. Read the arguments for both below.
As MIT grad students, we know the hundreds of us on full MIT fellowships do the same work as other grad workers. We are calling on MIT to voluntarily recognize fellows as a part of our union. All grad workers at MIT deserve the benefits, rights and protections of our union. (2/3)
When grad workers unionize, dues are the subject of some of the first questions. Let's clear up misconceptions for our

First up: dues don't represent a net loss for graduate workers. Dues help secure gains that more than compensate for the cost.

Congrats
@WHOIGradUnion
, where our fellow graduate workers have announced their intent to unionize! We love this piece in the Tech by grad worker Jacob Partida, who felt the union difference growing up and uses that experience to inform his thoughts on DEI at MIT.
The MIT Student-Worker Alliance has created an awesome

Last week, MIT announced the 1st ever mid-year raise for grad student-workers. This comes 106 days after MIT's fiscal year ended w/ an endowment $9B richer, & 17 days after nearly 1000 grad-workers rallied in Hockfield Court to announce the

(3) Union Security: Agency shop, which will ensure a strong and united union that allows our membership to hold MIT accountable and enforce the contract.
On Tuesday, September 12—one week after we announced our strike plan and 24 hours before our General Membership Meeting, where we had planned to collectively launch our strike pledge—MIT met us for a last-minute bargaining session.
(1) Real Recourse: Timely nondiscrimination procedures with access to full third-party arbitration, with the option for union stewards to accompany a graduate worker throughout the entire IDHR process.
This represents a major contract win on our key issues. As such, the GSU Bargaining Committee has signed a tentative agreement on all articles. These benefits have been negotiated for all members with a TA/RA, and MIT has committed equity on the economics package for Fellows.
Voluntary recognition is the most efficient and collaborative way for MIT to work with our union & address our shared challenges. If admin does not choose to recognize us, we will move the process to an NLRB election to secure recognition and begin contract negotiations. (2/n)
Last Friday, we rallied against unjust discipline, evictions, and arrests of peaceful protesters over the last week. To the MIT admin: drop all unfair disciplinary charges against our fellow grad workers NOW. When they try to discipline any one of us, we will ALL fight back.
We demand a contract with:
-Union shop to ensure the future of our organization and effective enforcement of our contract
-Fair compensation to keep up with inflation
-Real recourse for harassment, discrimination, and bullying
Last wk MIT tried to exclude fellows, 20% of grad workers, from our union, claiming they are students & not required to provide specific services or work on specific research to maintain funding. We know fellows are workers & deserve a voice. Hear why fellows stand with

Last Monday we asked MIT admin for voluntary recognition of our union, supported by a majority of MIT grad students, & invited them to work with us as allies in making a better Institute. We still haven't heard a decision about despite
